  • Challenge Roth 2019 Race Report. A recap of Challenge Roth, broken down into how I handled the swim, bike and run individually as well as how I planned the travel and nutrition for the race. Also how low-carb triathlon training affected performance and what triathletes can learn from this experience to use in their own triathlon race.

I think I can speak for everyone who has done a marathon but is yet to do an Ironman...bloody well done mate! Impressive.

Totally agree, a marathon is a bloody long day for most of us. I can't imagine the force of character it takes to run one AFTER swimming 4k and biking 180k?
Hats off to ALL finishers 👍

You don't have to apologise or rationalize your time at all! Even doing an Ironman no matter how "fast" the course is, is an amazing achievement. Way to go man!

Fantastic performance in Roth and thanks for sharing the race/pacing strategy! You confirmed what I have conclude for myself that the marathon and especially its second half are the most deciding factors of a long distance triathlon.

Taren I am beyond impressed. To go out on your first attempt and to execute it so perfectly is nothing short of Amazing. After 10 years of triathlon and 4 Ironman races, I’ve yet to nail a good Ironman and as I approach 50 the hopes of a sub 10hr IM are slipping away. Well done!!! You should be proud. (Oh on a side note after a couple months with the Oura I do agree that it records me awake way too much 😂)

Taren, this is amazing! Two days ago i completed my first 113k. I've had just four months of training - and it all went really well! 6 months ago i switched to low carb diet, feel great with lots of energy every day. And i had very similar experience as far as half iron distance is concerned: easy swim, well paced bike (plenty of nutrition: self made energy bars and gels) and the run which was 60% comfortable, than reasonably hard at the end. But absolutely nothing distressful - it felt great! My heart rate was the same during swim-bike-run and the pace was consistent! And overal i did better than i expected myself to do. I believe this is due to low carb diet, which really works.

Been waiting all week for this video. Was hitting refresh on my browser every few minutes to follow your times. I was also blown away by your time. Great effort! Your videos over the last year inspired me to sign up for my first sprint tri August 4th. At one point 3 years ago I was 372 pounds. I’ve done a lot of work but run/bike/swim was a big part of it. Been following your journey for well over a year and very happy for you. My aspiration is to do destination half Ironmans and take the family. Loved seeing your trips to coeur d’alene, South Africa, and Puerto Rico. I now am putting together a bucket list of half Ironmans to do. That might be a good video!

Taren, you have certainly changed your tune about running. I can direct you to You Tube videos you have broadcast where you claimed that one can win an ironman on 3 runs per week... I cringed at those videos of yours, yet I have loved every other one else you have posted. Just because you love biking does not mean that running is not important. Embrace the run, I'm glad you have... Cheers and thanks for everything that you do for the triathlon community.

Either you ran at a very high percentage of your threshold pace or you were in more like 18 minute 5k shape for Roth. Any ideas which it was? Have you done any 5k/10k time trials in the last year?
