    Hey Robert! Great Video i have a 2004 C70 and im getting a P0016 Crankshaft Position-Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A ..
    I replaced all the Sensors and im still getting that code i also replaced Solenoid Exchange. my next move is to do the timing Belt on it and replace the CVVT HUB i think the hub has stopped working due to oil gunk blockage.
    I won this car in a raffle for $100 so i want to bring it back to life! has 170K i replaced the ABS Pump and all the Brakes and rotors.
    DO you have any idea what this code is and how should i go about getting this code removed. thank you for your time i appreciate it!

      Sadly I do not. You really need a good level 2 or 3 code reader. How does it run? You could have a bad sensor or hub.

    Thank you for the video. I have an 07 XC70 that I am working on now. It has dual VVT, hubs aren't spring loaded. My understanding is that at the end of the day, as long as the timing belt sprocket mark lines up with the mark on the timing cover, I'm good. I did use the cam locking tool, but I swear the cam itself rotated 2 teeth in either direction, I assume there is no issue here, as the sensor will align itself upon starting (using oil pressure, right?).

    • @RobertDIY

      It will try. You only need the cam locking tool if you are removing a hub.

    Great video. But I got my self into trouble and I need some help. I replaced by timing belt in by daughters 2005 xc70 with dual VVTs. While doing the belt I discovered the camshaft seals were leaking slightly. I got the seals and the cam locking tool. Replaced the seals and and got all three timing marks line up - again with camshaft locking tool in place. Then put the belt on and adjusted the tension. Tensioning the belt pulled the exhaust VVT about one tooth past (towards rear of car) the timing mark. I turned it over by hand three times no contact. All timing marks went back like before including the exhaust one tooth off of timing mark. So started the car, everything great for a minute then started getting error code. P0016 camshaft and crankshaft not in alignment. My question to you is Can I pull it back apart, install the camshaft locking tool again, remove the belt, line up timing marks and put the exhaust VVT one tooth on the other side of the timing mark, install and tension the belt. Idea is the tensioning will pull the exhaust VVT to be directly in line with timing mark.

      3 months I have been going back and forth with this vehicle. I finally got it started.. after 45 or 50 times going off of the timing marks.. my compression across the top was in between 30 and 60 PSI.. finally I gave up and went to the top dead center method of inserting a rod in my number one piston.. after I set my cam locking tool.. so first I put in my cam locking tool.. then I played with the top dead center mark on my rod in the number one cylinder.. with the cam locking tool you can get a swing of about 45°, One direction or clockwise.. and approximately 45 going the other direction.. the notch that is on the engine or crank pulley-lined up with the arrow on the pump as described in 2000 videos.. IS NOT 🚫 top dead center.. top gun center is actually three teeth before the mark.. after I set the initial timing zeroed out with all the timing marks.. a continually put my locking tool on... Loosened my tensioner pulley.. and with my socket on my crank skipped a tooth going backwards, as most of the videos stipulate that the timing mark is actually pre-top dead center.. one tooth didn't work.. two teeth I got a rumble.. every tooth checking my compression. At one tooth before I was able to gain 60 PSI.. at two teeth before the crank mark I got 90 PSI on my compression test.. three teeth before- ? It jumped up to 160 and for the first time in 6 months, this car I purchased off of a shop started up.. fairly rough... But as I loosened my VVT hubs with my 10 mm all three going around each one.. by then turned my hubs clockwise to meet their advanced position... Now I have a running vehicle... I have a 2004 XC90 with a 2.5 turbo... I don't understand all of these videos online stating that the timing should be set from the crank mark to the oil pump mark.. which is very far off from top Dead center.. so to anyone that can't get their vehicle started.. your highest compression output is not at the timing mark.. I have found the timing mark to simply be the safe room in the house, so that none of the burglars on the cams can break in the door.. after I figured out my last adjustment needed to be done, when going backwards I skipped teeth on my exhaust hub.. I simply put on the locking tool.. and gradually got back to zero turning both the uppers and lowers individually as soon as I found resistance to work my way around bending any valves.. I don't know if this will be helpful to anybody.. but had I seen a single video explaining to me that the compression off of cylinder one was your starting point to finding your timing my car would have been running 2 months ago... I'm not joking around I literally timed the car at least 40 times before I finally got fed up and decided I was going to do it myself and eat the $400 in new valves I just had put on the head.. getting my car running off of the marks is not a possibility.. I have timed BMW which has quad VVT and over 500 timing jobs.. 200 or so head gasket jobs... And with my frustration I finally decided to go my own route... If you line your Volvo up with everything exactly where it is supposed to be as described in the other 2,000 videos online and it doesn't work... Take out your coil pack and spark plug on cylinder 1 and find your top dead center with the locking tool on... No matter what the Mark says on the crank... If you're getting 30 or 40 PSI across the top then the crank is wrong.. good luck... Thank you for your videos as well as they were good guidelines for how to not damage my vehicle.. I don't believe the job could have been done without the locking tool as you stated

    Such good information. On my 2003 non turbo with intake VVT hub, the VVT hub did indeed spring back (CCW) when I removed the old belt. When I installed the new one, the VVT hub went back to the timing mark by itself. Also, at 6:20, the camera doesn't show it, but there's another small timing notch mark on the 'back' side of the crank pulley. I have a question: what is the difference between VVT and CVVT hubs ?

      @@RobertDIY I found a little information about the engines using VVT and CVVT
      I believe the RN engines in the P2 S60 V70 cars (2.4, 2.5 etc) had VVT hubs technology. The CVVT hubs (Contnuous VVT) were rather used in the RNC engines (revised RN) used in the 2nd gen Volvo S40, V50, C70, S80, C30

      Hi
      From my understanding cvvt= continuously variable valve timing
      Vvt=variable valve timing
      Cvvt uses oil pressure to move the hub clockwise aor can move it anticlockwise too. Cvvt is not spring loaded.
      Vvt is spring is loaded and only applies oil pressure to one side on the inside of the vvt hub and the spring takes care of rotating backwards when oil pressure is cut back by the vvt solenoid.
      Both systems ones solenoids to shift the oil pressure to the required passages inside the hubs.
      I am not a mechanic but this is my understanding.
      Correct me with proper explanation if I got it wrong.
      Thank you

    Great as always, Robert. Made a mess of a cam seal job on my 04 V70 T5, struggling to get the timing correct (throwing code for CVVT). Starting from scratch, locking cams, redoing hub procedure, etc. Are you saying that it will be fine if I leave the variable cam position parallel with the head (as the cam locking tool forces it), it will readjust itself (to the slightly angled position)? @@RobertDIYsorry for not seeing the reply,
      So yes I got the locking tools for the cam and crank and installed everything according to Volvo VIDA . Yet I still get the same bad timing, it's a turbo so you check it with holding the gas a little bit but still under 1200rpm and I'm at 27-30° . At idle it's good and between -+7 , but turbos you need to check with the 1200rpm method.
      I mean is the hub shot? Or can I try and just adjust it left?(Retard the hub)
      I mean there's play in the hub but it should go out and in cause its how it adjusts itself, right?(with the oil pressure)
      I actually got it for the first time to between -7 but +9 (should be between +-7) but when I changed it a little more it went up to +27-30 again.
      I'm just so tired of having to redo the locking procedures since it will be my fifth time in a month , but I just want it to work.
      I Have installed timing correctly.
      I have installed a brand new vvtsolenoid.
      I have checked the wires to the solenoid.
      I have changed the oil.
      (10w40 but it shouldn't really matter, should be 5w40 but have had this fault with 0w30-5w40-10w40).
      When I got it to -7+9 I didn't remove the cambelt och put in locking tools, I just losened the 3 8mm screws and used the 55mm torx to retard it counterclockwise a little bit. But now its just the same issue.
      And one weird thing is when I change my exhaust from 3" to 2"5 inch then it went down to 12-14° but the next time I started her up it went back to 27-30°
      Do I really need to buy a new hub or am I just sucking at setting up the hub?

    Suppose you have the intake sprocket, exhaust cam hub and crank timing pulley, like on the table. Cam locking tool is not install, the cams and the cranks are just wherever.
    And that VVT hub, the 3 adjustment screws are loose.
    How do you go from there to a working engine ?
    Would the following procedure work ?
    FIrst, torque down the 3x vvt hub adjustment screws right in the middle of the adjustment slot.
    Then install the cam locking tool, I assume this would set both of the camshaft angle relative to one another. On the rear of the cams, the exhaust cam with the notch down and text upward while the intake cam, the text is down,
    Now you install the exhaust vvt hub and the intake sprockets with each a tooth aligned with the engine alignment "feature".
    So basically, that slot at the back that I assume the locking tool seats into is what is giving you the "default angle" for both cams.
    Now that crank timing pulley how do you figure out where it should go on the crank shaft ? Obviously the crank needs to be at a specific angle relative to the cams. If that's not something like, top dead center at no.1 cylinder, then what is it ? Does the timing crank pulley have a keyway so you can only put it at one location ?
    Also those timing marks on those 3x pulleys, I assume if you have both cams in the right location, you just need to line up a tooth with the associated engine alignment "feature". It doesn't matter which tooth, as long as A tooth is aligned with the feature it will be ok.
    For the crank pulley, the alignement feature is cast into the pulley so as long as this pulley can only go on ONE way on that crank shaft, it should be real easy removing it and putting it back on.

    just had this done yesterday- bought a volvo 2001 s40- 4 min after driving from private seller- engine light goes on- it had already got timing solenoid done- took 6 mechanics telling me that it could take "hours of diagnosis" to find why oil leak under timing belt cover- a real volvo guy looked at it in 2 min- told me- need to replace the cam.... which caused it to leak on the fairly new timing belt..which could ruin it- after reading copious amounts of cam this and cam that - got the hub changed and the seals- 800$ later..... so far so good- just hoping that slight intermittent stutter/flutter at a stoplight is now fixed.... mechanic said i should now be good to go for 5 years...at 350,000 apparently these models are toast- in hindsight probably wouldn't have gotten car- got spoiled with my volvo 1980 240- that ran like a charm.... but can't cry over spilled milk...

    Been watching you for years Robert, and you have helped me so much... Can't tell you how much I wish that I had seen seen this particular video BEFORE I did a complete head teardown and rebuild...and start-up😒.
    I am in need of an expert volvo opinion before moving forward... I had both intake & exhaust cams 180 the wrong way (didnt know till I watched this video though). I could hand crank engine and marks lined up so, I figured it was good...started it up and sounded like a 1960 VW BUG 😳. Under extreme situations
    I had to drive it 3/4 a mile in this condition to a place I could further work on it.
    Anyways, After finding out by this video, That I was in fact 180 out (by notches on back of cams). I attempted to fix my mistake. After fiddling and fiddling with timing all day yesterday, Its still not perfect.
    But I am wondering if its even worth it to keep fiddling or do I have slightly bent valves due to cams being being 180 out while being driven?
    Bonus question concerning The CRANK lock tool. Are there variations of the tool for 2.3, 2.4., 2.5? Because the CRANK tool I have inside my CAM LOCK tool kit doesnt stop the Crank from turning when inserted behind the starter.
    Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for doing what you do for all of us Volvo Lovers!!

    • @RobertDIY

      The crank tool only stops the crank from turning backwards. Not sure why they designed it like that. I never use it. If you can get the crank on it's mark, then set the cam timing, you can do a compression test to see if you're ok.

I'm moving the cam hub/pulleys from the old cams, but want to make sure that I have the cams in the correct alignment - how do i know if the cam locking tool is on correctly (e.g. the slots could go 180 degrees and still fit the locking tool on)? There are notches on each cam shaft - do you know if they go on the top, or the bottom when you place the locking tool? Thanks so much in advance!

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  4 года назад

      Well, you are supposed to install the tool BEFORE you take the head apart. Also, the slots in the cams and the tool notched are offset from center. If you install the tool properly, the circles line up, if you install the tool wrong, the circles do NOT line up. If you can't tell the difference, you should have the car towed to a Volvo mechanic.

    Hi Robert! Your videos are extremely helpful. Volvos are a little less intimidating to work on, because of you! I have a 1999 C70 Turbo with a 2.3 Liter engine. I am in the process of removing the head to replace a head gasket. It was running fine before I started in on this project, but I was losing a little coolant and I was getting exhaust gases into my coolant tank. The car was not overheating and I probably ran it through this past winter this way. I found an inexpensive kit from Harbor freight to verify that the exhaust gases were in the coolant.
    Anyway, I set all my timing marks prior to disassembly, not that it makes a lot of sense since the cam cover and cams have to come out. After I had removed all 40 plus bolts out of the cam cover, I could not get the cam cover off the cams or get the cams to come straight up and out without loosening the small 10 mm bolts because the backside of the bolts penetrating through the gears would not clear the side of the head in order to pull straight up, like you show in one of your videos.
    I had loosened and removed all 40 plus cam cover bolts, so I was trying to remove the 10mm bolts on the cam gears with sprocket in hand without screwing something up. It was not expected or fun doing that! The intake cam helped pop the cover up as you mentioned in you video. I did not touch the VVT on the exhaust cam gear, so I don't really know what you are talking about in this video about removing the center bolt and resetting it. If I didn't touch it, why should I need to reset anything? I snugged all the gears back down onto the cams, and do not intend to mess with them anymore!
    I bought all the cam locking tools I needed from IPD in Portland, Oregon. They specialize in Volvo parts. The tool kit wasn’t that expensive, but I haven't used any of these tools yet!
    Is there a good narrative video that you or anybody else has online that shows how to properly use these tools to ensure that when I put this car back together I won't be flailing when it comes to starting the car up?
    I've changed the timing belt, water pump and idler pulleys before without any of these tools available. I just made sure my crankshaft mark was aligned as well as the cover marks and I didn't have any problems.
    Pulling a head is a different matter! I have a sleeve protruding on the driver's side of the exhaust cam. There was an aluminum cover that looks like the VVT over that which fastened with 2 torx bolts. The passenger side of the intake cam just had a sheet metal cap that popped in place to keep the oil in. It got a little bent when removing the camshaft. I guess I need to replace it?
    I almost have the Head out as of this writing. I think I missed 4 bolts on the exhaust manifold side, perhaps a coolant line and 2 other fasteners I missed.
    I’m going to triple check everything after I get the head back from the machine shop. They don't touch valves in the machine shops around here. If they do they want the camshafts and camcover to bolt everything together to check clearances after removing the valves. I’ll probably do a leak check of the valves and do some lapping and sealing if necessary. The car ran fine prior to the blown head gasket. I bought the car with 120,000 miles on it. A doctor owned it for 12 years prior to trading it in on a BMW SUV. At this writing, I have almost 200,000 on the motor, and the car still had plenty of pep!
    I tool lots of pictures and bagged and tagged everything I've removed.
    Any advice or insight would be helpful! Thank you in advance!

      @@RobertDIY Thank you Robert! After I bought the car in 2013, I drove it to San Diego from Washington State, and it sat in my mother's garage. I bought it at the time to be a get around vehicle when I visited and to drive my mother around because she couldn't drive anymore because of her age. I drove the car back up in 2016 and I was on my way to a rehearsal at a local college here in a Jazz band I was in. Anyway, the check oil light was coming on! By the time I got to the college I had the entire contents of my oil sump out on the ground. I took it to the local Jiffy Lube and they told me I had a major leak. Fortunately, I was only a couple blocks from a Foreign Auto Mechanic shop. They told me that the PCV system had plugged up and was blowing oil out of the camshaft seals. I'm assuming it was the exhaust side because that's the side with the VVT hub. I didn't know squat about Volvos at the time and $2,000 dollars later I had my car back, but when they put it on their code reader, it read that it was around 3 degrees advanced. The mechanic looked at me like it wasn't his problem man! I asked him about driving the car "as is" because in the 70's I would advance timing on my old muscle cars. So I drove it around from 2016 until just recently in 2023 when I started losing coolant. I've "lived' with the "Check Engine" light! I bought a Code Reader and it's always the same problem. The mechanic who released it to me back in 2016 said he had a VVT to sell to me for $50.00. I should have jumped on it in retrospect.
      My question is: Can the VVT be adjusted by just turning it in the bolt hole to make up for that 3 degrees? I changed the timing belt, water pump and a couple other pulleys a while back hoping they were only off by 1 tooth when they supposedly fixed my PCV problem. Is the adjustment on the VVT most likely the problem? I appreciate your opinion!

      um..yeah. The video has an older different style of vvt. Mine is an oil pressure actuated one via electric solenoids on top of the engine. There are two of them, one for each cam. They don't move manually and are very solid. No other procedure I have come across has a part that discusses spinning the hub to set the timing. It looks solid and seems that it should only be timed by placing it on the marks. I was asking if you had insight on this type as well. :-)

      engine mounts? ..I'll get them to check that. but for an intermittent idle shake? it also seems to be losing power-such as going up hills- leading me to believe it's more of an internal fuel/oxygen mix type issue? Reading the chat rooms- one said it may be the idle control valve-(which I got cleaned- didn't help)-and now the engine light came on after I drove away from them.... they also said it was the spark plugs (ignition coils apparently were fine)- but I'm starting to think -instead of being penny wise- pound foolish- just go see the one guy ($$) I know who knows the Volvos inside/out to diagnose this once and for all. Another chat room said it could be -a defective throttle position sensor?. Problem is these garages won't tell you when to throw in the towel- they fix one thing and then say- oh but you have to get this fixed now...

    • @h.p.6455

      luckily (knock on wood)- the shaking -after reading up on it on volvo chat rooms- it was ONLY the need for new spark plugs and the idle control valve being cleaned (I went in asking for that)- before that I had 5 or 6 guys scratching their heads telling me it could be "hours of diagnosis!!!"

    Any videos on setting VVT on a dual hub motor? 2003 XC70 for instance? Every video seems to be on single spring loaded hubs. Thanks.......

      Have you tried this method?

      @@RobertDIY I have the VIDA instructions and some PDF instructions but this video doesnt seem to apply directly to a dual hub setup - I was just hoping for a video (visual learner) as some of the instructions a bit confusing in terms of setting the hub to full forward etc. Dealing with two hubs while setting the belt is not much joy either :) - I need 4 hands......

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  5 лет назад

      You install one hub at a time.

    • @CallMeJackWagon
      @CallMeJackWagon 5 лет назад

      Robert DIY I understand but the dual hub setup is not spring loaded so do I not have to worry about setting the hub alignment? Instructions talk about finger tight main bolt and turning hub to full forward then back then etc etc. It's a bit confusing and probably reads more complicated than it is.
      Thanks for the replies.

      If you lock the cams from the rear, install the hubs with the proper play, then install the belt, mark the cam sprockets if they are not marked, remove the locking tools, roll the engine over by hand to make sure you have no contact, you'll probably be good.
      You can also have it towed to a Volvo shop to have it finished. 🤔

    Man these new Volvo's are junk. Nothing beats an 850, 740, 960, 168, 122 Amazon, 780, s90 and 240.

      I wouldn't want to own one unless I had the money for maintenance & repairs.

      emissions calls for different standards in new engines, they are good for 300k plus miles, so I wouldn't call them junk, they just need some technique to work on.

    I did a timing belt kit replacement and both cvvt hubs lost spring tension , yes I have a cam locking tool. Car is a 2006 xc70. Any advice would be very helpful. I am hopeful I can rebuild them. Thank you in advance.

      @ogremgtow990 6 лет назад

      runs good , sounds good, has error codes p0016A and B as well as P0017Aand B. gas mileage dropped 25 %. Both hubs have zero spring in them.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  6 лет назад

      Maybe the timing is off. Not all hub have spring action, but if they did, they may need to be replaced.

    • @ogremgtow990
      @ogremgtow990 6 лет назад

      Both had spring action when I started but now neither spring at all they just flip back and forth . I guess I'm off to the junk yard for a replacement head with good VVT hubs and checks good on pressure test . At least I will have some extra parts if needed. Might call the VA man and see if they can help , sometimes they do help. I was hoping I could reset ( spring tighten ) the springs.

    ABOUT VOLVOS (fix few times a year volvo or fix every month audi) ==> I got volvo 760i 1991 volvo 740 1990 and i got volvo s40 2003 First generation (1995-2004) are the best volvos after them is the Second generation (2004-2012) and they are not even close to volvo i dont rly remember what was the alliance called but it was volvo , ford and one other company combined to make volvos but the only volvo thing in it is the coupe(the metal that holds it all in place) .....my s40 is 1.6 the only kind of meh thing is i got variable valve timing (VVT) on my engine you can read sweden....Toyota,Honda,Volvo and kind of VW other cars are breaking all the time from my experience
    ABOUT OUR ECONOMY AND RELIABILITY ==>you cant compare stuff before 2000 and after it ..before it was made to last and be expensive cuz you but lets say stereo or sewing machine one time and you dont need to replace it only to repair it one time a year max and that style of economy led to the market filling up with quality stuff and production gets lowered and factories dont need as much ppl aaand ppl dont have work soo...WE GOT A FIX we will make cheap shit that breaks all the time or we make a design that has a flaw in some part and we get happy ppl/sheep Thats why you cant compare fucking cars before with the cars we got today in shot WE BUY TRASH AND WE TROW "OLD" STUFF AS
    TRASH THAT IN FACT IS GOOD or but maybe it need time to be fixed...
    and we die cuz we destroy earth with greed and good ppl doing nothing that led to capitalism that led to more greed and stupidity
