Thank you from the daughter of the original owner. Thanks for being so nice to my sister in law who was Joanne. My father and brother both loved this guitar. Thanks
I've been watching the Trogly show for about eight years now, having worked with musicians and dealing with musical instruments almost my whole life. I'm now 60, and I know full well that the sincerity and honesty are never "faked" by Mr. Austin.
Hi Austin this is Gary Bolen Thank you so much for your honesty and professionalism a virtue uncommon these days My wife and I thoroughy enjoyed your presentation of her fathers guitar keep up the good work best wishes Gary
As an owner of a ‘76 natural custom, the defining characteristics include the pancake body, maple neck and a volute and it roars. The black paint might hide those traits, but to me, they are what makes this era. There are plenty of absolutely amazing guitars from this era that will tear your head off, don’t be afraid to rock with these guitars!
Every now and then, I say "OH WOW" out loud when the guitar is revealed. This one did that. It's vibe smacked me in the face. I love that headstock. Low frets, yup, I like 'em. LOL I had a The SG that had low low and flat frets. EVERYONE who played it said it was "one of the best playing guitar" they had played. Great piece, man.
Just before you said you couldn't see the lines on this guitar I noticed the one that goes across the toggle switch to the tail. Saw a Deluxe on a page that the owner and his friend had questions about. I think much of their trepidation was due to the paint chipped away where the three piece top met on both sides of the pickups. They seemed to have questions of it being real or not. It had the reflective knobs and vintage tuners. It was also aquired after ones father passed away. He had the guitar from what they said was bought new. I directed them to the Gibson site that detailed how to tell by the serial number. Which in this case was an inked on stamp as far as I could see. I also cationed them since they planned on refurbishing it that they bring it to a Luthier to get those lines that looked to be separating a little fixed filled and finished properly. They really didn't sound as though they knew much. I've played guitars with low wide frets and some with tall frets. And one or two that had ridiculously tall frets . The ridiculously tall frets I couldn't stand. I work around most anything else. One question I do have is I've noticed some models have an aluminum shield in the toggle switch cavity that seems to fit snugg inside the cavity. Whereas others don't habmve it. Why is that.
My guitar heroine, Kelly Johnson, played a 1980 Gibson Goldtop Deluxe - modified with a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker with crème bobbins in the bridge position - and gold-plated, Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.
Hey Trogly I'm LP Crazy it doesn't matter new or old. Especially customs but standards are just as good. This is quite a story behind this special family and guitar thanx for telling it to us. Peace bro take care.
I do love a maple neck Les Paul... and the price is right... but at the same time, I also hear Trogley about some of the short comings of this guitar: the low-wide frets... and pick-ups I'd probably swap out... since I'm one of those types who cannot leave a guitar original. So I'll let this one sit for a bit as maybe a collector will want it.
That big mark in the middle bottom of the neck backside, that you missed in the photos, could be from where it rests in the case. My '74 LP Custom has the same mark in the same spot, and it's from the case. It moves slightly around while in it and lines up perfectly to where it sits in there. I can send you pics of mine if you wanna see how similar they are. A decade ago i started putting a folded standard cotton washcloth in the case for the neck to lay on. As an added cushion.
80370... so February 6th? A bit older than I am, but still a birth year guitar. I actually had an Ebony 1993 SG (modded, not original) that I had to sell when my wife lost her job. In photos it looked very dark green on camera. Guess that was the yellowed lacquer.
There's a certain guitarist who at one point played a ebony Les Paul that sort of got me into guitars when I was young so I'm a big fan of the Les Paul Classic. To me, it's everything a Les Paul should b, it sounds and looks good too. I prefer the ebony one, I think the ebony one looks more like a rock guitar than say a goldtop or a burst.
With this LP you should try the following electric guitar strings: Ernie Ball Super Slinky Cobalt Flatwound Electric Guitar Strings 9-42 Gauge, and Fender Bullet End Yngwie Malmsteen Roundwound Signature Electric Guitar Strings 8-46. The Cobalts are a bit brighter without string noise. The YMs are more balanced.
I have mad respect for you Trogly! Your show is spectacular and you always do the right thing. You’re a definite bright spot in the day. I’m a session player and producer in Nashville and have turned many of my session buds on to the channel. Best to you pal
That was same model, year and color of my very first Les Paul. Sold it back in the early 90's when those guitars shot up in value thanks to Joe Perry using one in Aerosmith.
A person has to remember when it comes to high quality guitars. Gibson always falls short because of their QC issues. I'm guessing that hazy look was because this guitar was case queen? I thought this guitar was a little brighter sounding than most LPs. I liked the Door's in the playing Demo.
Gorgeous aged ebony 1980 LP Standard and nice story! But beware those 70s low wide frets, you're stuck with the wear for better or worse. I had a luthier in the 1990s 'attempt' to crown them on my used Norlin 1975 LP Custom and he filed grooves in the ebony fretboard, ruining the look for me. What could I do but sell, in this case to the original owner who somehow didn't mind. Maybe cause the luthier was his cousin.
That gibson is my year of birth….im still doing my best to save for my first Gibson les Paul. Oh man it would be awesome to find one that matches my exact birthday, but I guess we all want that as Gibson lovers😊
I love that guitar, I always have had a thing for ebony standards. They just are the epitome of a Les Paul to me. I have a Epiphone ebony standard LP thin taper neck and plays and sounds awesome… I still want a Gibson though but hate the price they fetch these days.
That guitar sounds great! I owned a 1977 white LP Custom back in high school that I sold to a guy in my hometown for a song over 40 years ago. Maybe I’ll try to look him up over Thanksgiving and buy it back now! Very cool guitar! 😊
FYI......Most experts, serious collectors, and vintage guitar dealers generally agree that Gibson electric guitars manufactured after 1970 are NOT normally considered "vintage". Gibson's "Golden Era" began in the early 1950s and ended in 2Q 1965. However, Gibson electric guitars manufactured up to 1969 are quite good and very collectible......and considered "vintage" in the marketplace. **** After NORLIN purchased Gibson in 1969, the new management shifted focus and implemented many cost cutting measures to the electric guitar product line - which resulted in quality control issues, undesirable changes to specifications, and too many "bean counters" and accountants rooming the factory floor.
I love Ebony standards , the cream plastics with the chrome and the BLACK ! Also I just love Black guitars though not strictly , since Ive been watching you Trog I now want a classic Sunburst LP to go with my Ebony LP ( which is my first )...dat one sound goot ! Thanks Trogly !
Nice guitar i have a1980 black deluxe purchased by my parents for graduation present ! I love it it plays amazing i call it my caddy plays with minimal effort i have a 83 custom in cinnaburst it play great to but a purchase a 21 standard in honey burst i love it too to many les Pauls to little money 😂
Its kind of a super dark green now with the yellowed clear coat. I love that. Kind of makes me wish I played in smokey bars so my ebony Junior would get that kind of color lol.
I have 4 Les Pauls, Including a 1981 Standard. It is the best sounding and best playing of them all. There are really good individual guitars from the Norlin era.
Seems you are more concerned about the appearance of rather than the overall playability. I guess that's the difference between a player and a collector. Regardless your vids are still interesting.
Both pick ups sounds really good to me. Austin these being T-Type pickups, would these be unpotted pickups or potted pickups? Thanks for your response.
Damn that thing is sexy as F 🤘🤘 I have an epiphone that I bought 12 year's ago that started out looking just like that, but I modified it, did the dimebag pickups, and blacked it out with everything from the tuners to the bridge you name it. One of my favorite guitar's to play. Still have the original hardware and pickups for it. But the dime bag pickups. Holy crap. Love em
love this one my 80 standard was made 302 days later with grovers and a brown square pvc case I have never seen on this show but says Gibson on it and not a chainsaw love the neck profile on these 80's its def not the same as a modern slim neck my favorite neck ever this one has been carefully played mine has been abused but I wouldnt sell it for anything haha!
To my ears the bridge pickup doesn't sound as bright as I expected. It seemed a little more of a midrangey tone, but then again I am 60 and sure I have some hearing damage from over the years. Lol
I haven't commented in a while. Loved the stones vibe in the start of your playing. Not a big fan of t tops. But these sounded great. Kool black les paul ! Excellent show brother! Thanks take care Trogly!!!
