Thank you from the daughter of the original owner. Thanks for being so nice to my sister in law who was Joanne. My father and brother both loved this guitar. Thanks
I've been watching the Trogly show for about eight years now, having worked with musicians and dealing with musical instruments almost my whole life. I'm now 60, and I know full well that the sincerity and honesty are never "faked" by Mr. Austin.
Hi Austin this is Gary Bolen Thank you so much for your honesty and professionalism a virtue uncommon these days My wife and I thoroughy enjoyed your presentation of her fathers guitar keep up the good work best wishes Gary
As an owner of a ‘76 natural custom, the defining characteristics include the pancake body, maple neck and a volute and it roars. The black paint might hide those traits, but to me, they are what makes this era. There are plenty of absolutely amazing guitars from this era that will tear your head off, don’t be afraid to rock with these guitars!
Every now and then, I say "OH WOW" out loud when the guitar is revealed. This one did that. It's vibe smacked me in the face. I love that headstock. Low frets, yup, I like 'em. LOL I had a The SG that had low low and flat frets. EVERYONE who played it said it was "one of the best playing guitar" they had played. Great piece, man.
Just before you said you couldn't see the lines on this guitar I noticed the one that goes across the toggle switch to the tail. Saw a Deluxe on a page that the owner and his friend had questions about. I think much of their trepidation was due to the paint chipped away where the three piece top met on both sides of the pickups. They seemed to have questions of it being real or not. It had the reflective knobs and vintage tuners. It was also aquired after ones father passed away. He had the guitar from what they said was bought new. I directed them to the Gibson site that detailed how to tell by the serial number. Which in this case was an inked on stamp as far as I could see. I also cationed them since they planned on refurbishing it that they bring it to a Luthier to get those lines that looked to be separating a little fixed filled and finished properly. They really didn't sound as though they knew much. I've played guitars with low wide frets and some with tall frets. And one or two that had ridiculously tall frets . The ridiculously tall frets I couldn't stand. I work around most anything else. One question I do have is I've noticed some models have an aluminum shield in the toggle switch cavity that seems to fit snugg inside the cavity. Whereas others don't habmve it. Why is that.
I do love a maple neck Les Paul... and the price is right... but at the same time, I also hear Trogley about some of the short comings of this guitar: the low-wide frets... and pick-ups I'd probably swap out... since I'm one of those types who cannot leave a guitar original. So I'll let this one sit for a bit as maybe a collector will want it.
Hey Trogly I'm LP Crazy it doesn't matter new or old. Especially customs but standards are just as good. This is quite a story behind this special family and guitar thanx for telling it to us. Peace bro take care.
80370... so February 6th? A bit older than I am, but still a birth year guitar. I actually had an Ebony 1993 SG (modded, not original) that I had to sell when my wife lost her job. In photos it looked very dark green on camera. Guess that was the yellowed lacquer.
That big mark in the middle bottom of the neck backside, that you missed in the photos, could be from where it rests in the case. My '74 LP Custom has the same mark in the same spot, and it's from the case. It moves slightly around while in it and lines up perfectly to where it sits in there. I can send you pics of mine if you wanna see how similar they are. A decade ago i started putting a folded standard cotton washcloth in the case for the neck to lay on. As an added cushion.
My guitar heroine, Kelly Johnson, played a 1980 Gibson Goldtop Deluxe - modified with a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker with crème bobbins in the bridge position - and gold-plated, Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.
A person has to remember when it comes to high quality guitars. Gibson always falls short because of their QC issues. I'm guessing that hazy look was because this guitar was case queen? I thought this guitar was a little brighter sounding than most LPs. I liked the Door's in the playing Demo.
With this LP you should try the following electric guitar strings: Ernie Ball Super Slinky Cobalt Flatwound Electric Guitar Strings 9-42 Gauge, and Fender Bullet End Yngwie Malmsteen Roundwound Signature Electric Guitar Strings 8-46. The Cobalts are a bit brighter without string noise. The YMs are more balanced.
Nice guitar i have a1980 black deluxe purchased by my parents for graduation present ! I love it it plays amazing i call it my caddy plays with minimal effort i have a 83 custom in cinnaburst it play great to but a purchase a 21 standard in honey burst i love it too to many les Pauls to little money 😂
FYI......Most experts, serious collectors, and vintage guitar dealers generally agree that Gibson electric guitars manufactured after 1970 are NOT normally considered "vintage". Gibson's "Golden Era" began in the early 1950s and ended in 2Q 1965. However, Gibson electric guitars manufactured up to 1969 are quite good and very collectible......and considered "vintage" in the marketplace. **** After NORLIN purchased Gibson in 1969, the new management shifted focus and implemented many cost cutting measures to the electric guitar product line - which resulted in quality control issues, undesirable changes to specifications, and too many "bean counters" and accountants rooming the factory floor.
That gibson is my year of birth….im still doing my best to save for my first Gibson les Paul. Oh man it would be awesome to find one that matches my exact birthday, but I guess we all want that as Gibson lovers😊
That guitar sounds great! I owned a 1977 white LP Custom back in high school that I sold to a guy in my hometown for a song over 40 years ago. Maybe I’ll try to look him up over Thanksgiving and buy it back now! Very cool guitar! 😊
Damn that thing is sexy as F 🤘🤘 I have an epiphone that I bought 12 year's ago that started out looking just like that, but I modified it, did the dimebag pickups, and blacked it out with everything from the tuners to the bridge you name it. One of my favorite guitar's to play. Still have the original hardware and pickups for it. But the dime bag pickups. Holy crap. Love em
To my ears the bridge pickup doesn't sound as bright as I expected. It seemed a little more of a midrangey tone, but then again I am 60 and sure I have some hearing damage from over the years. Lol
I love Ebony standards , the cream plastics with the chrome and the BLACK ! Also I just love Black guitars though not strictly , since Ive been watching you Trog I now want a classic Sunburst LP to go with my Ebony LP ( which is my first )...dat one sound goot ! Thanks Trogly !
Its kind of a super dark green now with the yellowed clear coat. I love that. Kind of makes me wish I played in smokey bars so my ebony Junior would get that kind of color lol.
love this one my 80 standard was made 302 days later with grovers and a brown square pvc case I have never seen on this show but says Gibson on it and not a chainsaw love the neck profile on these 80's its def not the same as a modern slim neck my favorite neck ever this one has been carefully played mine has been abused but I wouldnt sell it for anything haha!
I have mad respect for you Trogly! Your show is spectacular and you always do the right thing. You’re a definite bright spot in the day. I’m a session player and producer in Nashville and have turned many of my session buds on to the channel. Best to you pal
Both pick ups sounds really good to me. Austin these being T-Type pickups, would these be unpotted pickups or potted pickups? Thanks for your response.
Let this be a lesson to younger players.. ( less than 65) . There IS a reason that high end guitars in the day had low frets... they play very very easily, and feel wonderful. High frets might as well be scalloped neck... and they suck. Its not only murder on the fingers, the notes are slightly sharped as the string is pushed to the board behind the fret.
I haven't commented in a while. Loved the stones vibe in the start of your playing. Not a big fan of t tops. But these sounded great. Kool black les paul ! Excellent show brother! Thanks take care Trogly!!!
I happen to think a maple neck on a guitar is several steps up over a mahogany neck!!!! Fender used maple necks since its inception I don't hear the same negativity as I do here!!!!! The Fact is Maple is stronger than mahogany!!! Some of the finest Les Paul's were made late in the 1970's. I happen to think the colors like Cherry Sunburst and Tobacco sunburst are stunning on the maple!!!!!! They sunburst the neck the headstock the sides I don't see this as a reason to pass on them. I like the flatter top and the Nashville bridge!!!!!
1980 being my birth year, if I did not as of 2024 already have a guitar built that year - I would still probably pass on this one. I would not want to have to Shell out however much this particular guitar would go for, only so I could spend a similar amount of money having the frets redone.
Simple question but so far unable to get an answer. What are the screw sizes for the shielding cup? I've googled, ChatGPT'd & have still had no luck getting an answer. I'd like to avoid dragging my '79 Deluxe into Ace Hardware and trying to figure it out by trial and error. Thanks for the help if you know
Enjoy the content but I have to say, the guitars you are selling on your website are priced so far above market value its just bananas. You can buy a used Gator Green BFG for $600 on Reverb and you are selling for 5k and thats just one example.
This was a great episode even though it does come with a sad story. My condolences to the family but i love the history with this one and how it was in the family since new (if i remember correctly). I like how nicely preserved it is and has nicely aged. I also like to think of the great rock albums and stuff that were released this year British Steel, Iron Maidens self titled debut, Blizzard of Oz by Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads was still alive and well and making a name for himself etc....
Love it. Interesting to see it described as a vintage guitar. I'm slightly mystified about what constitutes 'vintage' in Gibson terms. I have a '99 Standard, but that even at 25 years, that isn't considered to be so. Is it age or era, so to speak?
The funny thing about collecting instruments based on how pristine they are is somewhat ironic. That’s to be pristine means they haven’t been played but… why didn’t they get played? Much of the time it’s because they didn’t have that quality to inspire the owner to play them. 😮😂
@@ChrisShortyAllen That makes sense in our current time but back in the day and I turned 20 in 1980 we didn’t think these guitars as collectibles. We bought them to play them. Such as the guitar tonight was played but most likely it was a second guitar or they were a rich hobbyist.

Dude...that is one beautiful guitar...I, personally, think 80s Les Pauls are fantastic...I have an 82 Standard and that thing resonates like a bell.

I have one of those black standards but mine has a Florentine cut🤯 never seen another one like it!
The aging of that binding is chef’s kiss perfect.
Indeed, neck pickup sounds very good, that Mcknight bloke when he switches to the neck pickup on a Modern has a face change, really good
Reminded me of my 2008 black Standard.
That's a beautiful guitar. The black finish and aged binding/inlays look amazing.
Black standards look good!

This guitar in that black light color looks amazing. Gibson shoukd make a black light LP in that color.
Almost like a Pelham blueish grey?
Try googling Gibson Les Paul standard custom shop Oxford gray 😊

My guitar heroine, Kelly Johnson, played a 1980 Gibson Goldtop Deluxe - modified with a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker with crème bobbins in the bridge position - and gold-plated, Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.

I don't know if I've ever seen a vintage Les Paul with inlays that exact shade of green before. It reminds me of the Les Paul Classic so much

What a great episode. You're the best thing that ever happened to Gibson guitars...besides Gibson guitars being built!
Gibson electric guitars are my favorite guitars!
How did you determine that the pickups are T tops instead of Tim Shaws? The screws look like they may be brass.
Just bought a 60s Standard in Oxblood. Happens to have been made on my bandmates' birthday. Anyone else just stumbled across birthday guitars?
That's one of the best Gibsons I've ever heard
I think it’s just me. But, that front sticker looks like there’s the Bad Brains lighting bolt on it. I’m probably so wrong. But, that’s what I see

Yeah yellowing is more accurate. It reminds me of bad teeth.
I absolutely love the yellow aging. My custom has it with aged gold hardware. Damn it looks so good!!!
a lot of great music was made with these Norlin LPs
Its kind of a super dark green now with the yellowed clear coat. I love that. Kind of makes me wish I played in smokey bars so my ebony Junior would get that kind of color lol.

It sounds like a massive Tele. I love it. I'd be up for buying it but the shape of the horn on some of the Norlin LP's ruin it for me lol
I see that Deep purple concert you were at influences your playing 😊
I dont think the back was a sticker, looks like acetone got misted onto it. But thats a stab in the dark too
That thing SOUNDS amazing!

Sounds phenomenal, and looks great too.
Please 70's---80's instrument's R not vintage at best "CLASSIC" also you have an absolute great program !
It’s sad to hear of the passing of the owners, this is however a nice looking instrument!
A lovely player's grade guitar. Sounds good, too.
Sweet looking guitar

what a beautiful guitar with an ever lasting soul
looks like the Virgin Mary on back 😅
Prefer a heavy guitar, myself. No preference on the headstock, paddle or no... doesn't make a difference to me.
This is a beautiful guitar!
If I could pick any guitar right now... THIS ,
Deal with the large headstock? Pfft. That thing is awesome.
Hi Austin love your work can u pls review an 81 to 83 wine red custom?
Zebra uncovered pickups and this becomes such a baddie!

Cant stand the look of this LP period's horn, looks horrible. And the yellow of that lacquer is filthy.

Put a piece of black gaffers tape on the red record LED. Reflection
Gibson management needs to watch this channel to find out what Gibson fans want.
100%
Gibson management needs to send me a R9 Murphy lab😂
On this channel they all want price cuts. And of course Trogly waffle.
I bet Gibson pays somebody to watch it already
Don't say that! Austin like some ugly colors
Yes
Looks and sounds good. 👍
Did trogly change the key of the intro ?
Love T-tops!
Good job helping that family and buyin that right away for them.🙏
Hell yeah

the bridge sounds pretty damn weak to be honest 😅
why did you pitch the intro song down? i dont like it...
I do it every october and change the logo to orange

✌️
Vintage...60s old growth wood, Pre-CBS, discontinued Bursts...1980 Les Paul's are NOT VINTAGE in any way. It's just an old used guitar.
