I like this comparison. You should make this a series. Long 44mag vs 5" 454 ammo comparison. It would be interesting to see how close common hunting/self-defense ammos are for those two guns. Thanks guys!👍🏼
The Garrett Hammerhead 330G are my staple for the Ruger pistol. The Alaskan hits hard but handles it no worries. Gemini Customs really dials the Ruger revolver in to perfection.
Personally I love the insane recoil of the 454 Casull, that's why I bought it, but I am interested in getting a 480. I have heard that the ammo can be hard to find. How well are you able to get ammo for it?
I agree wholeheartedly that the 480 is the most shootable of the rounds more powerful than the 44. I’ve shot plenty of 454’s, 475 and 500 Linebaughs and the recoil of those rounds makes it very difficult to shoot them accurately. 400’s @1200 fps from the 480 makes a noticeable step up from the 44, 30% more bullet weight and frontal area
Groo here Chuke, the key is the bullet, Kelly of Magnaport took big bear and big African game with a 44 mag 10 in superhawk and the SSK hard cast 320gr hardened bullets at standard 44 mag pressure.
Hi Chuke. I just got done reloading 100 rounds of 44 mag. 240 grn hard cast gas checked. I loaded this round for my Henry big boy. I used max charge of imr 4227. I have a 1-5 Leupold scope on it. 50 yds all bullets holes were touching. I shoots great from my Ruger super Blackhawk hunter 44 also. I loaded the ammo to shoot through both. When I carry the revolver I use heavier bullet. But you have to keep the length in limit to feed through the rifle.
Ive used those single action Rugers, BFR's, Freedom Arms, and the double action S&W and Ruger. For packing i went to the Ruger Alaskan 454 and S&W mountain gun. Theyre enough even with a shorter barrel and will shoot thru any creature. If i need more i gravitate to 45-70
I am very fond of Ruger revolvers. Ruger makes the strongest revolvers that for some reasons shoots at a higher velocity and pressures when everything else is equal.
That 44 Mag load is truly impressive compared to a standard 240 gr bullets at 1200-1300 fps. I guess you also could say (based on this test) that this BB load in the 44 Mag using a 7 1/2'' barrel is equal to or better than a short (3'') 454 Casul
Yep. Short barreled magnums do not perform . They make a magnum not a magnum. The 44 is better in my opinion, it’s cheaper, much easier to shoot well, and there is bullet weight and construction suited from mouse to moose. The 44 has killed literally everything on planet earth. It can do anything a handgun could be expected to do.
@@ironmikehallowween I've got 44 mags in a 7 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk and a 4" S&W 629. The 4" kicks a whole lot more than the 8 3/8" gun that it replaced but it's much more portable. I wish I'd kept the 8 3/8" S&W mod 29.
COA. Good video. That is wheeling some power for sure. Thanks for sharing. PS: The biggest threat we have here in NE OH are some wild and Unruly Gallon Water Jugs! I had to take some out the other day with my standard power 240 Gr .44 Mags which is always fun but nothing like what you were shooting. Take care.
I definitely could be wrong but I really don't see the point in ultra heavy grain hardcasts because after a certain point it doesn't do you any good. These are non expanding so velocity should be more important than bullet weight once you have reached a bullet weight where it will penetrate a bear skull and still drag througn a bear lengthwise. If a 45 super can do that with a 220 grain at 1300 then I don't really see why anyone would want more power because it doesn't seem like in non expanding bullets that energy is even transfered to target. Am I wrong? Cheers. Love the vids man
Very nice men ! Like you I love my Raging Bull 454 which kills me to shoot ! But I've always grabbed my S&W 44 crazy accurate in my chest holster ! So thanks for this test my confidence is even higher = Well done . I'm also shooting some Underwood , what say you guys ?

300+ grn pill @ almost 1500 fps. Not sure you can go wrong with either loading. I guess it’s down to what you have & which works better for you. The Ruger 44 red hawk I have is 6 rounds and I have a raging bull in 454 that a 5 shot. The bull is ported and I have nice hogue grips to mitigate recoil. I don’t know. Six might be better than 5? I think either one would do the trick. The 44 is scoped that is the single biggest reason I’d go with the iron sites on the bull. Just faster on target for me…
If you can kill bears with 180gr hard cast in 10mm you don't need more than 200gr hard cast in 44mag to do the same, at. 44mag regular power level and it will be a lot nicer to shoot, it would be easier to get follow up shots, like the 10mm because it's heavier,
This is a bogus test. You can push the .44 to velocities at or exceeding the 454 all you want, energy and energy transfer will never equal what a factory 454 will produce, let alone a hand load.
With all due respect….the .44 magnum is not in the same league as a .454. It's not even close. Even in a shorter length barrel, the .454 can launch a wider, and heavier bullet with more power. Don't get me wrong…the .44 magnum is no slouch. It has been the gold standard for handgun power for a long time, but more modern cartridges that can operate at 60,000+ psi have left it behind. It can still take any North American animal with the appropriate ammo, and it is the upper limit of power that most people can handle for hunting/wilderness defense.
One is 42 caliber while the other is a 45. As for power, the 454 is a step above. Also, most 454 handguns are safe to shoot hot ammo but there are only a few revolvers that can shoot buffalo bore +p+ 44 mag. So if someone has a Smith, don't put this kind of ammo through it, you will shoot it loose or detonate it.
“ …because Chuke makes storm troopers look like Jerry Michulek …” Sorry Chuke, had to laugh out loud at that one!
I have that same one but with the Bisley grips. Shoots the heaviest 44 mag loads with ease!
Superbly accurate.
That 44 is beautiful, I love the western style single actions so fun to shoot.
I have the same 44 for 15 years, great shooter and as a hand loader you can achieve great things with it.
I like this comparison. You should make this a series. Long 44mag vs 5" 454 ammo comparison. It would be interesting to see how close common hunting/self-defense ammos are for those two guns. Thanks guys!👍🏼
Awesome video Chuke, nice revolvers and great calibres, thanks and thumbs up from Kiwiland,, Tony.
Thanks Tony! Hope all is well there!
The extra bit of control with a 44 over the 454 might be worth it for many shooters.
The Garrett Hammerhead 330G are my staple for the Ruger pistol. The Alaskan hits hard but handles it no worries. Gemini Customs really dials the Ruger revolver in to perfection.
I think you'll like the 480 ruger much better... I think it's the most comfortable big bore caliber to shoot out of the 44, 454, 460, and the 500.
Personally I love the insane recoil of the 454 Casull, that's why I bought it, but I am interested in getting a 480. I have heard that the ammo can be hard to find. How well are you able to get ammo for it?

@jskypercussion Usually at gun shows..
Thanks!
Hey thanks so much bud!
Wish I could do more Chuke 😎👍
Great comparison - those two were virtually identical - the 454 has about a 5% advantage but that's in the noise. I still love the Toklat.
Groo here
Chuke, the key is the bullet,
Kelly of Magnaport took big bear and big African game with a 44 mag 10 in superhawk and the SSK hard cast 320gr hardened bullets at standard 44 mag pressure.

Hi Chuke. The Ruger super Blackhawk hunter is what I hunt with. Exactly like the one in your videos. I is one awsome weapon. Shoots very accurate.

Good video fellas. Great revolvers and calibres 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
I loved my Super Blackhawk Hunter. It’s plenty for anything that a handgun can reasonably be expected to do. You don’t need anything else.
With a longer barrel you could download it for less recoil and still have a potent bear pistol!
Gorgeous guns!!
Thanks buddy!

The Toklat 454 Casull needs quad ported by Mag-Na-Port to finish the revolver perfection.

I have a Super Redhawk 44 with 7.5in barrel. Recoil is not bad and it's a pussycat compared to 500 S&W. I have the Magnum Research BFR in 500
😊👍 I’m fine with the 305 hard cast and I don’t need them.
Garret 330+ is the way to go.
lets try a 5 and 6 inch 44, maybe in a model 629
Could you borrow a 7.5in Ruger 454 to also compare them to?
L9VE IT!! EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO!!
Beautiful 44. Does Wild West still have a TV show??
14.8 ACRES OF LAND FOR SALE, LOCATED ON BROCK ROAD IN DUNN NORTH CAROLINA
Single action and 6rd revolvers?
Try 147gr 10.5in 300blk??
30rds wifh less recoil may be more efficient
😮🤍! i love shootin' shit!
You can get 45 colt up to that range and still be under 55,000 psi for 1892 and 1894 leverguns.
These loads are similar because they run at the same pressure of about 50,000psi.
So dont chose snub nose for bear protection?
Great vid

Mod transfer bar? You mean the Baldwin bar?
The 340 bullet of the 44 may do better on penetration
