*100% best **Generater.Systems** I have used. A test for hurricane prep here in Louisiana: three AC units, 5000, 5000 & 8000, 3 fridges, 2 device power setups, 4 flat screens....AND I had 40% of the power meter to spare.*
I have a generator. Wanted to do this. It didn’t look as bad as I thought it would. Was it expensive to do? The other way you were talking about is that easier? Can you do a video on changing pull cord? I have to change mine before winter? Thanks for your help.
I'm just trying to figure out if the generator will automatically adjust to changes in load. When running on gas the carb butterfly opens more and the flow of gas and air are increased at the same time. I am guessing that when the butterfly opens more when running on propane, only the air flow is increased, thus the air/fuel ratio will be all wrong and the engine will run too lean and probably slow down or stop. Is this a problem?
I as well thought this to be a great video. Can you explain what hose size fitting is used on the snorkel and then back on the top of the regulator where your adjustment screw is? Also what size regulator is being used, or does it not matter. Thx
A couple thoughts/questions about your conversion: 1) why did you cut the frame to gain clearance (yes I watched the 5 part video)? Why not move the motor/alternator support blocks 3/4" to gain the required air filter to frame spacing? 2) did the manufacturer of the conversion kit recommend using flimsy flat bar to strengthen the frame? I doubt it is doing anything support wise... 3) in your full length video you had leak issues at the propane regulator valve... did you ever speak with the manufacture to find out if the prime/leak situation was normal? Thanks
I bought a new generator a couple years back and thought of doing this, but after seeing what you went thru it is not worth it, just for the fact I haven't even used it yet so why would I care what it runs on. I could see this if you were losing your power a few times a year or more, but hey, if it makes you happy that is all that counts. My sanity is worth more than a few bucks in gas.
Thanks for watching. It really wasn't that bad. Plus these days they sell kits called Motor Snorkels that are thinner so so there no need to cut the frame. When I made the video, I was losing power about 7-8 times a year. Its not about saving a few bucks in gas, its about having access to a fuel that you can buy when the power is out. When gas stations lose power too, theres no way to pump gasoline.
Yeah after that hurricane that hit the east coast I'm sure even gas stations have generators now, they can't make money if they can't pump it. But I always keep at least 10 gallons on hand all the time, but it was a great video anyway.
Forget hacksaw sawsall and dremel and get an angle cutter/grinder! It will cut fast, Harbor Freight has them and I bought one that has lasted years with lots of use. Get metal cut off wheels. Also a wirefeed welder from HFand teach yourself welding!
Just curious! Why didn’t you just go with natural gas it’s a lot cheaper and you don’t have to back stock your fuel source. I just turn the gas valve on and I’m ready to go. I know it cost a little more for the hose and quick connect’s but it’ll pay for itself if you end up only having 48 hours of no electric. I purchased the Motor Snorkel kit a 189.00 + 12.99 shipping and 50 ft 1/2” hose with quick connector’s and shut off valves and a couple pipe fittings for around 80 more it’s very convenient now not having to worry about getting gas and Stabile even LPG filled constantly. Nice job but to bad you had to cut the frame.
Yeah, those Motor Snorkels are pretty cool. They didn't have them back in the day when I did this video. Also at the time of making this video, I was renting a house that didn't have natural gas. It only had electric. The owner put in a large propane tank for the fireplace and the gas grill so I was able to hook up to that if I had too in an emergency. I did a whole video about hooking up the big propane tank here - ruclips.net/video/EFMQsTgxOig/видео.html&list=PLFsF_30Yizn81qxCpo6YU-X0_QTfuv37W . My generator is still going strong. I start it about once a month for an hour or so to help me burn through the gas and keep everything lubricated. Let me know how the Motor Snorkel works out in the long term. Thanks for watching and commenting ~Eric
I’m just curious if you can convert a gasoline generator to propane without a conversion kit. Only using a regulator and completely getting away from gasoline.
Thank You for the great video and information. Is Propane more economical then gasoline? Example: My generator ( 10 hp ) Has what appears to be a five gallon tank. Would a propane tank BBQ size run just as long? Just trying to learn. Again Thank You.
You should make your measurement for the flatbar frame replacement piece BEFORE you cut the piece out of the frame. The measurement will change when you remove the piece of frame. Even better idea is to install the flat bar before you cut.
I'm trying to figure out why he cut the frame to begin with. There is plenty of room to do this. The "donut" isn't that thick. Lol now the generator looks like S***
Any idea if your gen set has hardened valve seats designed for use with propane/natural gas? Also note the ten per cent or so loss of wattage capacity when using propane over regular gas.
Really good video on Propane conversion but would like to know where you got your on demand regulator and the propane hose? We have tried to find propane rubber hose but having trouble finding it. Would like a response please to both.
Beverly Baehm Hi Beverly, Thanks for watching and your kind words. The regulators and hoses come as a kit. I've put links in the description on where you can pick up the kits.
IMO the disadvantages are the cost of the kit and slight power loss. Also, with current gasoline prices in the US I can run longer on $20 worth of gasoline than a $20 propane tank. Natural gas is the cheapest to run on.
Old experienced propane supply man says both gas teflon and paste used together is what he found best. He had 50 years experience. Who am i to doubt this?
Yes in theory, as long as you find the parts that fit your particular generator. I left a bunch of updates and links in the video description to help you find what you might need.
If you get a good price on propane it's cheaper- the real advantage is you don't have gasoline spoiling in the carburetor and gumming everything up during long term storage- so the unit is always ready to use
I'm wondering how long a tank of propane will run a 3.6KW gen? Where I live a tank costs $20. Currently I can get just under 10 gallons of gasoline for $20. At 50% load those 10 gallons would get me about 25 hours of run time. And as much as 28 hours. Could 1 tank of propane do that?
propane of lying has app. 90% energy of gasolene .more costly to use propane .I am trying to convert propane gen. to gasolene because when camping I run out of propane too soon. and nor refills would breaking camp and going to town ,with gas I could fill with can fill with of gas ,jd
No. 10 years ago when this video was released there was very limited options, but these days, you don't need to cut the frame as they now have motor snorkel kits. I've update the video description and pin comment and links to motor snorkels kits.
I'm no expert, I just buy the tanks at the store. Propane tanks are high pressure and that's why you have to install a pressure regulator. From my understanding, if you have natural gas, you don't need the pressure regulator but you need the on-demand regulator though.

So how does the generator deal with varying loads? The need for more power needs more fuel.
I'm just trying to figure out if the generator will automatically adjust to changes in load. Always use channel locks in the right direction, they will not loose or tighten in the wrong directions

GREAT idea about shifting motor etc. IF possible to keep from cutting the frame.

@13:12 Bubbles are exiting your load block indicating a bad leak.
Sounds like when I used to watch others work and point out issues they missed. Everyone needs a son watching them work to help by noticing issues!
pointing out a gas leak is pretty helpful...your reply makes you sound like a bitch!
It seems he did the leak test without a primed line.
What are the disadvantage of using this? does it have a negative effect on the generator since its now using LPG as against the normal Petrol
IMO the disadvantages are the cost of the kit and slight power loss. Also, with current gasoline prices in the US I can run longer on $20 worth of gasoline than a $20 propane tank. Natural gas is the cheapest to run on.
did you really need to cut the frame. looks as if the air would have cleared!

Nothing. It works great!
you need to tighten those gas fittings better dude... pipe dope doesn't work unless the threads are very tight.
Brass fittings can NEVER be tightened "TOO TIGHT" Snug, yes or else you can break or damage them.
Nice demo video. Thanks.
Thank you for your support!
