Inside A Beautiful Secret Garden Landed Home Retreat By A Father-Son Architect Duo

This week, we visit a lush landed home located in the east, which has been a family home for 30 years. The home originally had just 2 bedrooms, living, dining and a utility room. The father and son duo, Marcus and Mohan, are both architects and gradually renovated the home to fit the family’s needs over time which includes a new family area as well as a study room.
Over these 30 years, the home has been filled with art, ceramic works and collectibles made or collected by the family, creating a very personal space. The family also chose to build around a large tree that was on the property instead of removing it, which ultimately became the relaxing corner in their entertainment room. Due to the west-facing of the home, the family also cleverly took advantage of the foliage by using weights to grow it sideways. These bent trees and plants then then acted as a natural barrier from the sun, and creates a nice effect of the light flowing into the home.
We really like the overall open and natural feel to the space, almost as if the home was in nature. It’s a huge contrast to the today’s modern, yet arguably cold feel that many landed homes go for. It’s a breath of fresh air to come home to such a lush home, especially in an urban setting like Singapore. We’re also absolutely riveted to see how much of the family’s warmth can be felt in the home.

Favourite part? The people..so creative and nurturing of the space they have 😁 Fav part of the house...Maybe the patio facing the sunset. But where is the mom? Would be nice spending an afternoon in that patio chatting with this family ... so much to share. You started with a house and created a forest.. well umm.. an ecosystem.

The house is absolutely GORGEOUS but, that father son relationship is beautiful and priceless! I truly enjoyed hearing the dad talk about his son and how the son talks about his parents. That house is so full of love. Nature had no other choice except to grow in abundance right along with it!

@@mammontustado9680 I actually see this house as a minimalist one. They're artists, so art and art supplies are essential for them and they will take a lot of space. I believe that minimalism takes different forms based on your occupation, your lifestyle, how numerous your family is and the place you're living in. For a digital artist living alone in a small apartment, minimalism will look different, but definitely not soulless.
@@mammontustado9680 minimalism can have soul, but not a lot of people going for minimalist homes are actually minimalists, they see it as a trend they're joining in on, that's why a lot of minimalist homes look awful, because it clashes with the true personality of the owner

Fews things just heated me on thus video:
1. This is what i truly call outdoor living. In Canada we only have two months like that…otherwise we have plants in pots for winter.
2. This is the most aesthetic maximalist hiuse i ever see and it’s like effortless…these people has great taste.
3. I personally never see asian father-son relationship like this…thus is beatiful and surreal. As an asian living abroad, this is more common un western culture.

This reminds me of Nim's Island, or even the hanging garden of Babylon. I've always wanted a house somewhat like this, just even a grassy roof, or the door overgrown with lilac bushes would suffice. But this, this is absolutely breathtaking!

I like it.... this is my dream home. What's preventing me from choosing this kind of bold design is mosquitoes and night bugs...How did they do it? What measures did they took to prevent mosquitoes and night bugs from flying in? Thx
Yea bugs and mosquitoes are my nightmare. lol.
Ya I also scared of all insects flying in. I guess they have to be used to multiple times a day squishing bugs. Esp from that mature tree.
when you invite Nature in as such a statement, you can't really pick and choose. I am sure they live with a lot of critters, like lizards, frogs, etc. in some way, it forms a kind of eco system. they help to eat the insects too.
@@hilmir I don't mind lizards, frogs, insects, bugs, wasp, etc. I love them. I once had a pet snake. The only one I worry about is mosquito. I had a house surrounded by garden before and the mosquitos drove me crazy! I could not ignore them. How do they prevent mosquitos in their house?
Same. How beautiful this house is, here i am with my house which only has a tiny backyard but pretty large frontyard with lot of plants (i love plants esp. Orchids) - yet i put a wire mosquito net for both doors 🥲 I can't stand any mosquitos, they always bite me 😫 they also even bite my dog's stomatch 😭

it's really beautiful and organic. but maybe it's the color grading or actual lighting, it makes the space feel dark and gloomy too. in some shots, there is definitely a haunted dilapidated feel. as much as i love Nature, there should be a balance from it over occupying and making a space prohibitive for its human occupants.

Depending on whether it's a dengue cluster, sometimes NEA would come by to do random inspection too. Landed homes also tend to have more insects, including mosquitoes, invading.
I liked the character of people living in the house..and that's what is reflected in the design and appeal of the house.. Functionality and aesthetics.. great combo.. 👍
