Always wanted this for a career. Even when I was in college and I took a tour in one of these ADR and foley studios, it felt like they were dodging a lot of "how'd you get started" questions so I still have no idea how people get this lucky.
Thats one thing everyone always wants is better visuals in movies more lens flare depth of field all that but to me i think good sound design is a vital part of movies even games and i love this man for his ingenuity and for following his passion Keep listening guys!
Oh, sure, when this guy does it in a specially-built studio, it's a fascinating, often under-appreciated contribution to the craft of movie-making. But when I do it in my garage, it's a tragic cause for concern among my neighbors and relatives.
When I was little I either wanted to be a foley artist or a professional scuba diver. Turned out I became a microbiologist. But my first love will always be sound
It all started when i was a kid and i got my first 4 track and a mic. I wanted to record the greasiest fart i could but just never knew quite how to get the best one. My "a-ha" moment is when i realized a wet balloon really had it going on. The greasiest~
I get it if you want to mimic the sound of a bird flapping its wings or a robot walking. but, if you want to mimic a skateboard, why not just use a skateboard?
This looks like dream job. I would like to know, how is his budget for one (average) movie, and what is his most expensive stuff he have it. E.g. Hey boss man, I need that bell $200, will you buy it?
Im absolutely astonished! The fact that there are more astronauts in the world than foley artist is mind boggling!! Definitely a huge respect for this guy!
The art of Foley is so impressive and so important. I remember as a kid, playing around with an OLD holmes brand window fan , with 6 blades. stick a clear flexible pipe to it and listening to it. through the tube. It sounded like an ENTIRE 1940s airforce flying at max cruising altitude overhead. Very Foley, and I didn't even understand what that was!
@@davidbarth80 I totally forgot I wrote this comment. Funnily enough, I quit my job a few weeks ago and in 5 weeks I am going back to school and starting my sound production degree. I am going to be a sound engineer.
A true artist.I love the imaginative mind this guy has,to bring us magnificent sound and effects. A great movie without great sound effects would only be half as good.
It's kinda sad that how much love we show to actors while these artists are doing lot of brilliant works. Stunt doubles, risking their lives. When considering action movies, most of the scenes are fighting/stunt scenes and stunt doubles are doing it, while the character hero/heroine taking rest and getting paid more and more. Also if you consider the superhero movies there are lot of script writing, story writing, Character design, environment design and many, but do we know who did all the works? No. We know who's the actor of the movie, but we don't know who wrote the script and who designed all these designs/animations, etc... We're praising, recognising and giving so much love for every single actor/actress like Rock, Vin D, Robert D Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett J and many... but we're not praising or recognising these kinda brilliant artists. Rick stunts, this man, and many talented artists are becoming unknown to people.
I remember the first time I learned about foley artists was during Republic Commando. The props they used for the weapons and aliens seemed so weird and crazy but worked so well.
Sound mixing and editing are the two most important professions in movie making. It's one thing to make a film, buts a totally different thing to make it feel like you're in it.
I can look at a picture and tell you what sounds are there. That's what got me into making audioplays when I could. I've even made my own when I've had to, IF I could. Otherwise I just do my best. But I would love to meet him and explore this. And bearing in mind I'm HoH so this very ironic, I literally can't tell sounds apart in the real world because it all meshes together as One Indistinguishable Noise. But my ex bf who helps me make them and tell me if the levels are OK loves the fact I think of sounds that he never takes notice of, like if there's a motorbike going past somewhere or someone just randomly drops something that's not central to the plot. Just ambient noises, that I couldn't pick up on in the street if I tried, but I can put it all in there in Audacity. This would teach me what makes what sort of noise. Maybe I should look into getting this sort of job since I technically do it for my audioplays and actually really enjoy it, but it's not like anyone would realistically take me because I'm HoH and need someone with two ears to be listening to the program and telling me if it's not the right volume.
Movie: A 20ft Dragon bashing it's wings on the floor and spitting fire on a forest Real Life: A man bashing a feather duster on a sofa and blowing on a glove
I would like to see a 5 hour version of this guy showing his stuff.
Even that would not be enough
RoliTheOne I could watch this all day long. It's kinda ASMR for the soul lmao
So satisfying it's scary
RoliTheOne for some reason it’s kinda relaxing
Go pro and a drone for a week?
Foley artist must be a thankless job. If you do a bad job people complain. If you do it right nobody notices =)
Anders Öhlund Now we both will notice it tho :D
That's how it is with a lot of jobs tbh.
That's the same with CG artists
That’s how it is with everything: when you do things right, it’s like you’ve done nothing at all
I'm sure the money more than makes up for it.
What? Video over already?
Sooooo annoying!!
the length of this video is criminal
Is it me or does that guy looks like George Lucas? Amazing Job and an amazing artist
A pre-requisite of working there lol
It's great to see a person absolutely in love with his job, his life!
"i hear the sound in my head and think about how do get it on paper" that is absolutely incredible i wonder how many people alive have this ability

Thank you foley artists, for making images in movies comes alive

Mostly this guy's life is making sound effects? That will be my dream job

Slapping your cat to make it scream doesn't sound the same as a door creaking, John.
"The Force is strong with this one"
This guys a legend. The contribution to film these sound effects have is awesome
Yes finland!!
That dude has found happiness.. what a fun career
"detail is our business..." says the guy wearing grey sweats

Phil Davis as soon as I saw this comment he said that

Phil Davis so he can focus on sounds
This guy tapping his pencil

1:08 wait is that place in a different planet he said it went down all the way to earth
;42 If it were honest then you would not be replacing the original sound.
Feather duster COULD be a bird. It was a bird!
My wife uses the same excuse for her hoarding…they make sounds!!
This guy should release a sample plack
This job looks like super fun.
To be a fly on the wall for 1 project/movie.
Saw Skywalker, was expecting light saber sounds :(. Cool video though!
I wonder if they get to watch the movies they were asked to put sounds on if their finished
And he never gets yelled at for leaving things messy...
This dude's gotta be making at least 1 million a year.
I really hope this guy doesn't actually think that being a sound guy is harder than being an astronaut hahahaha
I want to see a two hour documentary about this ...
Each time the music comes on in the clip I think it's Für Elise at first.
I love this guy and I dont even know him irl
Finland mentioned! ÄKKIÄ TORILLE!
When I was little I either wanted to be a foley artist or a professional scuba diver. Turned out I became a microbiologist. But my first love will always be sound
Is that metal thing what made Iron Man's walking sound??? It sounds just like it
My mans wearing polo Ralph Lauren and sweatpants...

this guy could make some amazing asmr
Well, that should have been 50X longer. . .
I could have watched an hour more of this!
I’d like to hear the sounds on headphones in bed .
That's incredible man
Found this video because of his podcast, The Right Scuff. For those interested in foley you should definitely check it out
What about that loud inception sound

Bruce Prichard and George Lucas had a baby together and it's this guy!
Lol. Somebody's trash is Someone's treasure
Cool, I wonder if he has watched Tenet.
Dream job! Please tell me where to start!
I havent seen it yet, but if they don't have the lightsaber sound I will never forgive them.

Skate board sound: doesn’t just use a skate board lol. This is all pretty interesting though.
Where is the light saber sound?

YEP!

0:24 Isn't that the Conan the Barbarian sword?
Senor Studly my initial reaction was “that’s what he said” but going back you’re right! It just slipped right by me

They are. When foley artists duel the loser becomes a prop.
Hey, they also have feelings m8

Lance Espinosa aye why you have a picture of me as your profile picture.fake
Well I mean, he didn't include all of the astronauts outside of the world...
Supply and demand. It's such an easy job that it only takes one guy to do hundreds if not thousands of movies.
@@danielholida6847 No. Definitely not.
I saw Skywalker in the thumbnail. I thought he was gonna show us how the lightsaber effects are made
Haha same
With real lightsabers, duh
they hit the wires that help light poles stay up
blah blah nah that was for blaster sounds.
Might be a bit late - but Doctor Mix has a video and I do think there is the original one out there as well. :)

ASMR on a professional level :P
thought the same lmao
thats an amazing job!
I always wanted to be a foley artist. No idea how to get into it
Just do it
Maybe sound engineering.
step 1: download adobe audition
step 2: go outside with a recorder
There's probably a program at a theatre school like Emerson, NYU, USC
prove to the right somebody that you've already been doing it as a hobby.
If there's not many foley artists, how do I become one?
+TwoWrights Right?
go to fimschool and specialyze in film soundvoilá. or if you are on a budget learn by yourself
Film school, specialise in sound.
I know people that specialises in sound.
There's lots of different types of sound jobs in the business.
Imitate the sound of one then fake it till you make it lol

I'm 98 years old.
Is it too late for me to change careers?
And also, is my heroin addiction going to affect my resume?
Thanks.
Happy 100th Birthday dude

No. Being a judge on America’s got talent is the best job
That wasn’t him speaking it was the sound of a washing machine slowed down.
Why not use a scateboard for the sound of a scateboard? Just a thought.
Why would he? He has other equipment to mimic the sound, and can use that same prop for tons of other sounds
Could you please tone down the “shwing” sound we hear every time someone puts a finger on a blade ?
Funny, that is one of my pet peeves also besides weapons movement. I would NEVER use a gun that sounds like what we use gun movement!
