Okay this is very close to how my grandma use to make it. The consistancy is the closest I've seen yet. She would use bread and day old biscuits, when mixing everything she would mush everything with her hands together, right before putting it in the oven, she added those bread ends and let them soak up some of that juice, not all on top. Those end pieces make the best dumplins throughout if you ball them up a bit. Once out of the oven and cooled down, she would place a piece of plastic wrap on top and stick it in the fridge over night. OMG! I could make myself sick eating it. You have such a Wholesome, Momma vibe about you. You make me miss my momma.

What a lovely comment...both the baking ideas and the compliment about being like your momma. I think I might be a pretty good grandmother myself...how could I not be, since I enjoy it so much?! That use of the crusts sounds fabulous. It must add a nice chewy texture, which I would love. Definitely trying that and will also add that suggestion to the bottom of the recipe. Thanks!

You mean to make bread pudding? No, but that sounds AMAZING!!!! And another great reason to make French toast!

You think egg substitute would be an issue? There real eggs they just come pre-mixed in a carton already ?

Nikki, I'll bet egg substitute would be fine. The chocolate flavour would disguise any non-egg flavour and cook right in, I think. If you try it, would you let me know how well you think it works?

OH NO! Just noticed when mentioning the more recent edifice next to our church in London (where we have made the chocolate bread pudding for parish luncheons), I said the Romans built the Tower of London!! Just to be clear, even I know it was built by the Normans!

    Could I use challah?

Stephanie!!! You are the fastest viewer ever!! This just went up about two seconds ago!! Yes, I should think challah would work beautifully! The milk fluffs the bread up...I can't think of any kind of bread that wouldn't work, except for bread with its own flavour like rye.

@@addictedtoloveagain It is as easy to make as it looks, and despite the cozy casual look of it, it has the most marvelous flavour. One of my mainstay desserts!
