  • Frankie Gavin (fiddle), Máirtín O'Connor (box), Alec Finn (bouzouki) and Johnny McDonagh (bodhran) play two jigs followed by three reels. The first jig comes from German melodeon player John J Kimmel (1866-1942) who recorded in New York c.1919; the second jig is Father O'Flynn. The first reel Hand me down the Tackle is followed by two reels which Frankie Gavin calls Conlon's. 1983

What always strikes me about Johnny 'Ringo' McDonagh's bodhran playing is his musical humility - that is, how willing he is to forgo excessive novelty and just drive the melody like a heartbeat. Most bodhran players get that they should not play overly loud, but I think too many take their secret revenge on the group by showing off with overly intricate playing and variation so relentless that it detracts rather than enhances.
Ringo, for his part, has the rare instinct for measuring the moment and playing with his mates, not in spite of them; and as a result, he's one of the best-known virtuosi ever to play the instrument, and one of the few whose individual style is absolutely indispensable to his band's signature sound.
