Overwatch used to be a legitimate international peacekeeping force. But some of their covert ops went public, causing the U.N. (or the story's equivalent) to shut them down and declare all further activity in Overwatch's name illegal. At least, that's the "common" knowledge. It won't be in any of the 3D animated cinematics, but some of the darker members of the original Overwatch organization decided that they would be better off without their goody-two-shoes commanders breathing down their necks.
I really hope you plan to go through all of these, they're so good. Also the doctor that looked after Winston was actually named Winston. As a result I think the doctor likely died and Winston adopted his name and glasses out of respect and affection.
The experiment kinda failed on the other gorrillas, they rebelled and killed every humans on the lunar colony (including Dr Harold Winston). Immediately after witnessing the death of the crew Winston decided to leave for earth with a caspule (the one we see in the cinematic, who falls on winston). As for the glasses, Winston has a pretty poor view (we can see that in the cinematic when he looks outside his bedroom), so he kept the glasses for that and as a memento of his adoptive father. And of course he took the name Winston too.
If you pay close attention, youll see that Winston was farsighted when younger and kept in the Horizon Lunar Colony on the moon. He "borrows" the glasses from the scientist, Harold Winston to see the view more clearly. ❤
@kaizammit 23:38 one amazing piece of environmental storytelling that you only appreciate when you play the game is that the room that Winston is in was a starting area for an in game map called watch point Gibraltar. The glass that the solider flies through leaves a hole that is present in the game. The ship that falls on Winston is there as well. Details like that tied these shorts to the games really well. Man I wish they didn’t give up on the single player mode for this game.
A fun fact about reaper. The reason he essentially exists as smoke is because his cells are in a constant state of decay and regeneration thanks to some experimentation by another overwatch character named Moria. Due to this he is immortal as he the constant regeneration means he can’t die.
I actually love, how even this early on, they hinted at future characters, one of the characters in the little flash of the hero cards near the end of the cinematic there was Sojurn, a character that was not introduced into overwatch until Overwatch 2
the one thing you haven't noticed is that reaper throws away his guns and magically replaces them instead of reloading. Its a game trait and it adds to how cool he is
@@NalaLoviiI know I hate that they decided to take away overwatch 1 that we payed for and give us a free overwatch 2 so we couldn't even play it if we wanted to

32:47 I'm pretty sure it actually shows where they are, not where they're from. Reinhardt is German and Mercy is Swiss, and they're definitely not there on the map.
Finally! I've been hoping you'd do another overwatch video. It's been so long since you did one for Honor and Glory. I didn't think you were ever going to do another

Overwatch had stages of its lifetime. It was founded to combat the worldwide robot invasion, "The Omnic Crisis". After the crisis was won, Overwatch became "big brother" and was waging war on organized crime, which is where Overwatch had its identity crisis. Overwatch was falling apart from the inside, propagated from leaked info to the public. Public opinions flipped, Overwatch imploded from the catastrophe at HQ, and the Petras Act outlawed Overwatch activity, leading to its dissolution. And so many of its members went into vigilantism, private military, national service, or forced retirement. The world didn't necessarily get better or worse with Overwatch's dissolution. It merely shifted the global power balance. As we saw in this cinematic, Winston repeatedly has been tempted to recall Overwatch with every regional breaking news. But the attack in this cinematic was enough of a pressure point for Winston to initiate the recall, which each member had the option to answer the call.
your breakdowns of each one are so interesting to watch. it's genuinely fascinating to know why things work, why the cinematics are so good. also these are good tips for drawing. it's not a cinematic like the others you've watched, but I would be very interested to see your opinion and breakdown of Sigma's origin story. the origin stories are just little animations, like a couple minutes at most, but Sigma's (I think) is widely considered the best one. I won't go into detail--don't want to spoil anything--but it's definitely something.
One thing I hadn't noticed until now is the lasers aiming down at the banana after it falls. Some of them aim past the banana and hit the ground. The ground has shown that it's very reflective since it is reflecting the killzone guys is shown walking. Having used lasers in real life, even on less reflective surfaces there's usually a good amount of light splash that occurs which isn't present at all on the floor but you see a little on the banana. It's likely an oversight or was purposely excluded for reasons I'm not aware of, but I didn't catch it until now. And having used IR light under night vision myself, this light splash effect is magnified considerably due to how light sensitive NV goggles are even if it's a non-visible spectrum of light such as infrared (IR).
Awesome stuff as usual. I'm not as up on deep Overwatch lore but I get the impression it's similar to the Avengers, kinda heroes but they got caught up in a lot of stuff and the people they were trying to help kinda turned their back on them and they got outlawed. The game in the background you mention is indeed another of Blizzards, it's a card game called Hearthstone.

Reaper is an amazing idea for a game like this. Born as Gabriel Reyes, he fought for the USA military. He was selected for enhancement in a "super soldier" program and dubbed Soldier: 24. He later joined Overwatch. He was passed over to lead OW by another "enhanced" soldier, Jack Morrison aka Soldier: 76. He continued to serve OW as the black ops commander while the resentment grew. "Blackwatch" had their own medic, however: an Irish geneticist named Moira O'Deorain. She turned him into a being which is constantly decaying, but also regenerating cells faster than the decay. This is why he can disperse and reform. Moira can as well. Reaper does finally snap and survives the explosion of Overwatch HQ. Soldier: 76 is thought to have died.

the vibe is similar to Avengers because Overwatch was created during the height of Marvel and plays heavily into the same tropes of a bunch of ragtag heroes fighting just as ragtag villains
the overall story of Overwatch is split into three parts: the backstory, the cinematics and the story during the game
the backstory was told mostly through text on the website prior to launch and implied in these cinematics - in short, Overwatch used to be basically a super hero unit working on a global scale against a robot uprising, was framed for terrorist acts by Reaper's group and was tried and declared illegal as a result
the cinematic stories, well, you've seen some already, but they all either revolve roughly around this moment where Winston initiates the recall, or provide backstory for specific characters
and lastly the actual game story... has unfortunately barely moved forward since the game launched. there were some minor events, but very little has actually happened because as you mentioned it is a multiplayer-focused game
"doesnt kill characters off" oh yeah you can see this clearly in Mei`s video
*Spoiler warning*
LOL true but I think that's a little different. In that cinematic you'll notice that you never get to see the people that died. It's purposefully shot in a way that almost dehumanizes them. Even the one person Mei speaks to before they're frozen isn't given a face. He's just shown from the neck down. I think this was done to lessen the impact of their passing. It's like, you don't necessarily feel bad for them directly, you feel bad for Mei and how SHE feels about them. Keeping it all very PG. Like how you never actually see Bambi's mom get shot you just know it happens from the way everything unfolds.
Not to mention Dr. Winston (the man not the ape) also died rather brutally but it's never shown just spoken about.
Dark tone, that's all. There wasn't actually any killing or something awful visually displayed. Still PG.
