Lonesome Dove is the only book that ever made me feel like crying. I've felt sad in a lot of other books. I've felt despair. But Lonesome Dove hit hard.

For me, Pirate Aba brought me to tears many times.
What makes me cry is the sacrifice involved in keeping a promise or honor, or when one character sacrifices their life to save another, it doesn't count if they're drakes, goblins, humans, or ghosts. The centaur's birth scene also made me cry, really hard.
    Thank you for sharing ;)

Hi Matt! I really love your videos! They’re so full of info and so far, with what I’ve read and your opinions on those books we have a very similar reading teste, so I’m always looking forward to your recs. I really like when a book is able to make me this emotional (not just with crying granted but yk), and therefore I was really excited when I saw the thumbnail for this. Anyway, just wanted to say that I love your content! Keep up the great work!

Malazan made me cry a bunch of times, like most people I think. But the book I’d use on a list like this is definitely The Crippled God, simply because it made me cry the highest number of times, for separate things
Somewhat similar to a Memory of Light, being the last book of a huge series - there’s a lot of reasons to cry lol. But Erikson also just had so many beautiful and brilliant character and plot moments that just got me going… 😭 😭 😭

I have had emotional moments in the Malazan:Book of the Fallen(The only series that broke me since this day).Especially the two famous books for making people cry(MOI and Reaper`s Gale) but surpsingly no the moment people expected to be:Spoilers :
In MOI: For me it was the Pannion Seer meeting his sister, I just didnt expect him to get so worried of how his sister would react seeing him like that. The first time I have ever cried for a book
In Reaper`s Gale: Rhulad Sengar finding about what happened with the Edurs from Sepik Island , his reaction and the reaction of the Errant(I would think the only time the Errant felt so much compassion towards another being).

SPOILER COMMENT FOR HUNGER OF THE GODS!! -
I didn’t realize that the character I think you were referring to died at the end! When I read it the first time, I interpreted it as her being captured. Later on, I’ll have to go back and reread that scene to see how it’s written, so I’m not sure I agree that’s what actually happened just yet. If so, well man. That was my favorite character.

I hope you are right, although I would have shed those tears for nothing! It's been a long time since I read it and I wasn't very well read in fantasy when I did so it's totally possible I read it wrong!

    • @DrunkenGyarados
      @DrunkenGyarados 2 месяца назад +1

I feel like it definitely reads as if she is dead, but I have spoken to a lot of other fantasy readers and it seems almost unanimously believed that Orka didn’t die, she was just badly wounded and will be captured.

  • @EricMcLuen

It did just take that one line in MoI to bring it all back.
Lots of tears in this series.
    🕯
The reread doesnt make if any easier.
While not an actual cry, I did get wispy at the end of My Effin Life when Neil got sick.

  • @favrewanab

David Gemmell has brought more tears to my eyes than anyone. Just about every book he wrote had something that got me going. There is a part in his book The Swords of Night and Day that gets me going just thinking about it. And it isn't even a main character death or anything either. The characters in his books just feel so real and he weaves such strong bounds between them. When something happens to them or around them I feel it too.
I've also felt strong emotional connections multiple times during Wheel of Time, Malazan, Stormlight Archive, First Law, Kingkiller Chronicles and many others. Basically it's almost a requirement for a top 10 spot on my all time favorites list, lol.
If I don't feel a strong enough emotional connection to the characters to where water works are possible then the author didn't do a good enough job in my opinion.

Golden Sun and Dark Age from Red Rising get me every time I read them. Especially one in particular in Dark Age. "Worthy", if you know, you know.
And one that caught me completely off guard in The Last Argument of Kings from The First Law. "I've always enjoyed our talks" that gutted me.

When i was a kid the hobbit and return of the king both got me. As an adult Sanderson is the only one who gets me crying. I don’t really get sad when people die in books for the most part, but I’m glad Way of Kings is on there because I cried at the same part you did. I think they’re proud tears. Utter despair followed by selfless heroism followed by ultimate catharsis and good winning against all odds. Perfection.

    As to Malazan, wellllllll (Spoilers)
The Chain of Dogs didn't affect me whatsoever, because I felt like I didn't know any of the characters well enough that I should care. That coupled with so much awful shit happening that I'm numb to awful shit happening is a pattern throughout the whole series for me.

I’ve openly weeped exactly 3 times while consuming Fictional content. One was while watching the One Piece anime when we lose one of the main characters (and shut up yes she was a main character to everyone who loved her lol) and the other two times were listening to two separate Dresden Files books. The first time for Dresden was when Harry has to make an impossible choice at the end of Book 12 Changes and the paragraph of his thoughts while he’s doing so has never failed to make me cry. The second time for Dresden was in Book 15 Skin Game and it was a simple question from a Child that as a Father myself it had me balling my eyes out. The best Authors are the ones who make you feel and these 3 times were the ones that made me cry…

Three mentions of Sanderson but only that one Deadhouse Gates scene? What about Beak? 🕯What about The Snake? And like dozen other scenes from Malazan. Beak broke me but The Snake made me a hollow shell. Not the part where they were starving. It was the part where they were re-learning being kids and to play again. Two small scenes in The Crippled God and I had to stop reading and let it all out.
And most recently I finished Wrath. One of the best wholesome dying scenes ever. I'm tearing up right now :D
