Trying this tonight! A little trick is to secure all the tubes with a rubber band in a circular formation and you can set them on a plate or bowl to catch any drips.
I had to search to find chapstick with simple ingredients and it’s not the cheapest. Anything else keeps me reapplying constantly. I had no clue it could be this easy to make my own. Thank you for this!
This is amazing.I just ran out of 2 chapsticks.I'm a truck driver I keep bought on the dashboard and one in my purse and 1 in my shower bag. They all got low today.Thank you
This video was so well-timed for me. I think I've developed some kind of allergy or intolerance to something in most lip balms. I found an organic unscented balm from Dr Bronner's, which is pretty nice, but expensive. I think this will be a fun winter project to tackle this year.
I attempted a tallow and honey version a few months back, with little success. I had forgotten the beeswax for hardness. 😂 I'll definitely try this though! Have a great day!
Tallow balms, and anything tallow are my favorite products. I know you said you have been making this recipe for years, but if you don’t mine I will suggest to leave the shea out and add it into the melted beeswax and coconut oil. Shea is head sensitive and sometimes it causes a grainy feeling/ texture after a while. My recipe is pretty similar and I love it!
Get your hubby to take a block of wood drill some holes deep enough to put the empty tubes in . But not too deep that way the tubes will not fall over, make it easier to fill.
@ld4467 good for you! We taught our daughter also to use tools! She has embarrassed a couple of boyfriends with her use of tools and their lack of knowledge!
Heat the metal measuring spoon and the solid will come out super easy. I have a lip balm kit in my Amazon cart for the tube holder which will be reusable and control the filling/spilling. Rubberband around tubes and put in a baking pan would also help.
I’m going to try this recipe. I haven’t ever used shea butter in any of my lip balm recipes. I either put my tubes in a circle with a rubber band around them or I have a silicone measuring cup that the same height as the tubes that I can put 5-6 tubes in for easier filling & moving to the refrigerator to cool. I also use popsicle sticks, regular size & larges ones for getting my product out of the measuring spoons & stirring while melting. Merry Christmas 🎄
Perfect! I go through so much lip balm in the winter and they don't work. But this looks like something even I can do. I'm going to buy the ingredients I'm missing as well the tubes and I will try this! Thank you!

I made this with my 10-year-old granddaughter. I didn't have olive oil so I subbed jojoba oil. I had to make two batches because the first batch I was more like lip gloss instead of a thicker balm. I figured out that because I'm using a block of beeswax instead of the pellets the measurement for the amount of Beeswax is quite different. I thought I could just grate to tablespoons 😕. Before we did the second batch I did a little research and discovered that 2 tablespoon of pellets is about 1 oz off of the block of beeswax. I used my kitchen scale to weigh it out. So, once we got the ratios correct it came out perfect ❤
@TheHomsteadingRD Becky at Acre Homestead made some with cardboard tubes. But I don't know if she ended up liking them or not. Thank you for the recipe and tutorial. Have a very merry Christmas xx
I use an adjustable heat candle warmer or coffee mug warmer to melt in metal measuring cups. I also put in the higher needed temp to melt ingredient (off hand don't remember, probably beeswax then add lower melt).
I just ordered unrefined, raw shea butter and it smells strange like blue cheese... what should it smell like? I'm wondering if it is spoiled! Love this easy recipe and can't wait to try it. You make it look so simple!
Adjustable measuring cup. They make 2cup ones most commonly but there is also a 1cup version. That one has a 1/8th cup line. It would make measuring the solids and transferring them sooo much easier.
This is awesome. I need to do this. In my house, food is more important. Besides, the sneaky, seriously bored child plays with makeup and chapstick and ruins so much. 😢 The freezing winds this winter have burned my face, and my hands are seriously chapped. For nearly 20 years, I have been putting on my face and hands. Please don't attack me because Vaseline WILL NOT make you break out! I always had severe acne, and now I have none. ---> I stopped using makeup.
I am not crazy about using the plastic tubes, either, but they work great for the plantain salve I make for bug bites and other itchies & owies. I must go check out that little double boiler! Merry Christmas!
@@lizchilders4154 The article I linked was my inspiration and plantain salve was the first concoction I foraged and made from scratch. I gathered enough broad leaf plantain leaves to fill a pint jar, washed & dried, then chopped them very finely and covered with olive oil. After about 6 weeks I strained it off and used it to make the salve. I also keep some of the infused oil in case we have a big poison ivy breakout or someone is covered in mosquito bites or chiggers. It’s easy to just slather on the oil. For the salve, I add a tablespoon of beeswax (either pellets or finely chopped) per ounce of infused oil, and heat it all in a double boiler until the wax melts. I like to add a drop or two of lavender essential oil too, after I take it off the heat, but that isn’t necessary for it to work. Pour the melted mix into the tubes and let it cool. Easy peasy. commonsensehome.com/grandma-called-it-medicine-leaf/
