The problem is that when the left hand is not active, your right hand will feel very different. You can spend an hour doing the open strings in this way, but then you will put the left hand back on and old habits will immediately kick in for the right hand. You haven't really "bridged the gap", so the retention isn't there. One modification which remedies this is to mock-finger the notes on the wood off the fingerboard on the E string side, including approximating string changes and shifts, while you play the open strings with the bow as you are doing in the video. This way, the physical sensation is tricking your brain into thinking you are playing normally, so you will hear the actual state of your right hand, and not an artificial state where your brain knows the right hand is isolated. After smoothing the issues with the right hand in this context, you just move the fingers back onto the fingerboard and that's that. There are a number of beautiful little tricks like this that create the MOST DIRECT connection between what you know and what you don't know.

I don't play violin, yet I've been subscribed to this channel for years. I'm a musician (guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin) and I always get insight from every video. Thanks for doing these, they're always valuable across any stringed instrument.

As a wind player, I also found this incredibly helpful! Our equivalent of bowing is air flow...

it is for real one the best practicing techniques! The bow pattern is often the cause of trouble, even if we think, it is the left hand! Thanks for this reminding video and as always great content! I love your channel and professional approach! Maybe we can some times do a video together on some topic!

Always good to come back to these things. I did not understand what I was looking yet a year ago. Now I see it's the g-string third finger at first I was like I don't even know what I'm looking at d-string First Finger open A.
I was just trying to read those notes and didn't understand about the notation shortcuts hahaha so I put it aside knowing I could come back later and later is now. 04:18

Brilliant technique, but I would also use a metronome to ensure spot on rhythm. There’s a temptation here to clip the dotted crotchet in the new bow rhythm. I have used a similar technique, but without inserting the letters. That will help enormously, so thank you for this.

Hello, I learned to play the violin when I was a child and the last concert I played when I decided to give up on my violin was a concert by Vivaldi. I tried recently to play the violin (I am now 72), but I could not remember the notes in each position, unless I stopped playing and started to think about where would that note be, on what string, and on what spot. I would greatly appreciate it if you could suggest something helpful. Thank you. Gabriella
