I don't know if you have ever tried this, Ed, but I use a small metal crochet hook to dig the bark out of the roots. The hook end is rounded and very smooth, do it does not damage the roots. But it can easily reach in between roots to loosen moss, or other medium. Hooks come in many different sizes. As my hands don't work well anymore, I find then invaluable. Great going, my friend!
I have tried them Sharon but I always go back to the way I've always done things......age just makes you stick to the ways you know best!! Once again take care and thank you. Ed.
Hi Julie. Funny you should look at this particular video because this morning I have repotted them after 6 months just to see if I have saved any of the divisions......I think I have 19 of them...... I'll not tell you what I found...... I'm about to do a small video.j......thanks Julie, Ed.
Hi Ed, no, not boring at all, I am learning... My first impression is that each split has numerous pseudobulbs but hardly any roots ! You seem to be ok with that ! I am surprised. Thanks Ed
These things have just got to be done whether we like it or not Sharon. I am just hoping that the divisions will show a little growth come the spring. Thank you for your kind comment my friend and take care, Ed.
Hello Nina so sorry I'm late with my reply to you. I've no excuse I knew your comment was there and I thought I had replied. Anyhow it seems to be a busy week and it is always wine o'clock. It's 9pm and whilst answering the comments I have a very nice glass of red wine by my side.......together with a few chocolate eclairs !!! Ed.
Good evening Catherine. It's not difficult to split once you've done it and got some confidence......you should never be afraid of hurting the plants......they've been around probably longer than most plants so delicacy is not one of their drawbacks !! Take care Catherine and stay safe, Ed.
Hello Pat. I expect nothing until I see something happening. Giving them less water and more air should do the trick but we are dealing with orchids so you never know what will happen. Take care and thanks, Ed.
This particular one is years old Patricia and only recently has been a little neglected. Following the cultivation guide-lines doesn't guarantee orchid success you have to 'dabble' about a bit with your growing conditions until that magic moment arrives when you know you have got it right. Take care and I hope your plant begins to become a good grower. Ed.
Good idea Jay but I don't carry enough stock to seel to the general public although I can move a few at out next society auction.........where I'll be lucky to get a fiver a plant!! Take car e and thanks for the comment, Ed.
Hi Helen. She does want to sell them on but only when they are suitable....which they aren't yet because of the root problem. Will let you. know when ready ....if you are still interested.........thanks and take care, Ed.
When you get a situation with your orchids like this one you have to dive in with all guns blazing until the job is finished.....makes you feel good when it's all over!!! Ed.
Thank you for posting . I bought this orchid a few years ago in Hawaii and need to repot. I had no idea it could be divided. Would like to know what medium you repotted and how much to water.
I plant all orchids in bark with perlite and the Dendrohilum glumaceums require lots of water in the growing season.....and they don't particularly enjoy warm conditions. For small divisions let them dry out for a couple of days before re-watering. Ed.
Oh my goodness Ed that is a huge dendrobium to clean up. I'm not looking forward to unpotting my oncidium Sherrybaby it's too huge and I think needs deviding and reporting as well.. keep safe and happy growing : )
Go on Reah take the plunge and make yourself a few more plants ...you won't be sorry you did it. You'll feel proud of yourself when you see the new divisions growing. Ed.
Good morning. I don't have this plant but my lady has the colossus and tankerville. She says they are quite an easy plant and she doesn't do anything special for their cultivation. She uses RainMix for fertilizer and doesn't let them dry out. As regards temperature in winter it goes down to 12c and rises to almost 30c when the days are sunny. A humidity of 50% --65% and a not too harsh air movement. Hope you are successful with your new purchase. Take care, Ed.
I think it's probably because I sometimes speak when near to the mike on the camera and other times I speak when a couple of meters away......I'll try and fix the problem. take care. Ed.
Nice Job Ed, there are some really nice divisions their buddy. Get them down the society when this current situation is over, let um part with some money. See you on the next one.
That's exactly the reason she wanted them splitting ,,,great minds always think the same!! I think the first meetings should be auctions they will go down a bomb after Brexit. Ed.
I figured it out. I heard there's a bark shortage in the UK because of Brexit, Sheila wanted you to split them/pot them so it would use your bark, not hers. 😉 On a serious note, what is your opinion on adding oyster shell to Phragmipedium pots? I've been told it is beneficial so I bought a bag of it to sprinkle on top so they'll get a little extra calcium every time I water. I didn't want to use dolomitic lime because it makes the medium really alkaline (and it makes a giant mess as it dissolves).
Good evening Michael and thanks for the take on the bark !!!! I read in the Australian Orchid Digest some years ago that two professors had done some reserch into the advantage of putting shells into the medium. The result was that they found that it did no appreciable difference to the medium.....simply because shells are much too hard for watering to make any positive effect in releasing calcium. It's the same thing with calcium carbonate rock chippings which will only release calcium in cold water and how many times do we do that to our orchids. In my opinion Michael stick to the calcium nitrate it's the one calcium easily taken up by the roots.....and use it on a regular basis. Take care, Ed.
Huge and lovely Orchids....i would like to see the flowers of those Orchids....Sir!
Thank you and all the good wishes to you...Eds Orchids.
Thank you Zaleha. I think it will be some time before these divisions show some blooms. My best wishes to you and to Northern Borneo.

Hi Ed, only just found this video, another orchid to add to my wish list! Much love Ju xxx

Super interesting, thank you. I'm growing mine in pure golden sphagnum.
Should do very well in that media......so fingers crossed for you....and the plant!!......take care,

The thing to do now is to try and grow the roots. You can try your best but it's up to the plant whether it wants to bother or not. Take care,
Ed.
Sorry, great growing, my friend!

I'm sorry. I touched the wrong button. I wouldn't dare splitting them. Thank you for sharing. Please take care.

WOW! You surely have lots of patience to work with this plant for your lady. Do you expect all of the divisions to grow well?

I wish my Dendrochilums would grow that well.

It seemed to be thanking you the way it kept dividing so easily. Hopefully you can sell some to recoup the effort put it into it.
Yes they'll be sold when the roots have grown jdawg.......thank you and take care,
Ed.
I am amazed how short the roots are for such a large plant. It will be happy now and spread out more roots❤️
I hope your prediction regarding the roots turns out to be a good one Shirley. Thanks for taling a look,
Ed.
With all the increase of prices to ship plants outside of the UK. You can clean up by selling some divisions for your country.
Good idea Jay but I don't carry enough stock to seel to the general public although I can move a few at out next society auction.........where I'll be lucky to get a fiver a plant!! Take car e and thanks for the comment,

What a wonderful job you’ve done. If ever Shiela wants to sell any division on , do contact. It’s amazing watching and learning from your videos.🤗

Good morning Ed. I'm glad to see the division of such large plant. I had a couple of over growing ones but wouldn't

I feel a lot better about repotting mine, they're not as big 😁
