Ha!! Fun
I won my 1947 Featherweight in a Shop Hop, Love it.
Oh, you lucky lucky girl!!! Congrats
This is such a helpful video! THANK YOU! I love your color choice & that quilt behind you is stunning as well! 🫶🏼
Glad it was helpful! More than anything.. it takes time and perseverance!
Painted Featherweight’s cost in the multiple thousands, so you added a TON of value to your Featherweight. And with a custom box, you have a treasure 👍.
Thank you. Yes. I know they are pricey. Glad my hubby was brave enough to try it for me.
I love your color featherweight. I only own a singer 201-2 that came with a Queen Anne cabinet and the table has a knee pedal sew. I bought the machine with all original attachments and seat bench for $150.00.
What a great find. Congrats
Add a LED bulb and a snap on ankle and snap on Teflon zig zag foot. I know your 201 is straight stitch, but I use a zig zag feet to see stitches better.
Good idea on the bumper pad. You could cover up a pool noodle as well.
You definitely could use a pool noodle. :)
Thank you for sharing. This is one of my upcoming projects and it's so good to hear someone's process. I appreciate you!
You are so welcome!
Never really enjoyed boxing videos till watching yours. I even made one of unboxing a Niçchi BU from Goodwill. They are not my go to videos. Your enthusiasm and presentation drew me in and I did stay till the end(n subscribed n liked). Make up could never enhance your enthusiasm and natural beauty. Enjoyed seeing Featherweight Shop respect and appreciation their product. Their commitment is visible through their website and it's so nice to see it in their shipping. ❤
Thanks for watching
LOVE LOVE LOVE the machine and especially the 40s color!
Awww.. thank you. It is my favorite color. :)
It’s beautiful. I learned to sew on my mom’s featherweight machine. I wish I still had it.
That's awesome. Thanks for watching
Such a great informative video. I had pondered the idea of making my featherweight special. Now I know what to expect. Need to just jump into it.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the color love the case also. Good job.
Thanks!
Beautiful color. My mom had a mustang that color that I used to get to drive when I was a teenager. Good memories!
How fun! I first fell in love with this color after seeing a Chevy Beretta when I was about 13.
Excellent video!Love your quilt and color choice for the featherweight.
Thank you so much!
My case and attachments were banished to the garage do to the STINK. I tried your method , I was surprised the fabric came of so easily. The amazing part was the vinegar do the trick. Just glad I found you. Thanks
Glad it helped! Good luck with the rest of the process!!
Hi Lora,
THANK YOU for your video. Your machine and case are beautiful!
You have inspired me to move forward on painting one of my Featherweight machines, to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary. I LOVED the painted case! Thanks for the parts tips you shared as well.
Many thanks again and may you enjoy years of happy sewing on it. God bless.
Susan in the 305.
PS: love the Happy Stitch Quilt behind you.
You are so welcome!
enjoyed this video. I love the teal color also. Great restoration of both machine and the carrying case.
I absolutely love my featherweight. That's been my fave color since i was about 13. Ha
Loved your story on refurbishing your featherweight and all the details. I got Norah, my 1952 featherweight, last year and I enjoyed hearing the details of how you restored your case. Now, I may tone that a try. I did get the tote from the Featherweight Shop and love that, but having the stink cleared out and a beautiful case is now on my radar. Thank you!
thanks for watching.
I’m so very happy to find your informative episode! Thank you! I just ordered a 1941 singer with a wood case online from Goodwill! The photo of the serial number of the machine is a bit blurry, so I looked it up and it’s either a 99, or a 66! So I feel much more confident I can have fun considering what restrictions I can make after watching your work!
Wonderful!
Your decals are so lovely! Well done!
Thank you so much!
This is BEAUTIFUL👩🏻🎨🐏
Thank you.
Great job. I’ve been shopping with you for years🙏🏽
Thanks for watching
Super great idea that I will do with my new featherweight ,1950. What a great idea to put my scan n cut to work for me ,Thanks for sharing .
Glad it was helpful!
I really love this video 🎉
Thank you!!
Thank you for a step by step Featherweight restoration/paint. Love your's, nice color. I've got probably 5-6 featherweights, one belonged to my late aunt and I had sewed on it when I was about 7 years old, so it is my favorite, and I had to have the "white" one made in Canada I think, and also have the "tan" one made in Great Britain. And got one for my youngest son when he was 8 and learning to sew, and he wants to save it, he is 37 now, he took it to college with him. I did not know the featherweight case was wood underneath the cover, and so happy to learn that thanks to you. One of the older black machines I have I looked into getting it painted, and it was crazy expensive but the wait was over a years, and I just gave up. Thanks for your video.
I was fortunate to find someone local to paint my machine and a husband brave enough to disassemble it. Ha! We'd definitely do it again and gained a lot of knowledge from the first one.
I pick up my first Featherweight tomorrow. It's a 1940s one. Everything is included with it but the case is worn and the paint is worn out on the machine. It definitely needs a full service and restore. I plan on painting it purple. I have all sorts of wood working tools out in the garage so I'm confident that I can make any repairs that are needed for my case. Love the color you picked. It's lovely! Thank you for your video.
Oh my!! How exciting!! Have fun and enjoy.
BRAVO!!!
Thank you
That is the exact color I’m having one of my machines painted! It has no clear coat, case or attachments. She is a 1937 that had been in an attic since the ‘70’s.
Oh!! How fun. I love it so much. Definitely one of the coolest things I've done this year.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thanks for all the good ideas.
You are so welcome!
Balsa wood. Learned something new, today!
Glad I sparked an idea. :)
Thanks for sharing!! You did a beautiful job on the machine and the case. I have a case for a 301a machine and it opens from the front. It's got water spots on the covering material that I can't get out and the inside is lined with some sort of fabric and it is torn at the hinges, so I am trying to gather ideas. I don't trust it to support the machine from the handle. I don't even know if there is wood under the fabric.
Yeah.. my case was in such shape, I decided it was worth a shot. Good luck with your adventure.
@@lorabrinkman I think mine is worth a shot too, but I want to see someone else dismantle theirs first. I am a chicken!
I love your quilt!
Thank you. Lori Holt My Happy Place.
Love your featherweight. I bought my custom one two years ago and 7 months after bought a black original because I wanted it to be all original. I wonder if you can make a video of how to oil it step by step. I know the featherweight shop has one but I thought since you made your video it would benefit many of your subscribers who are thinking of purchasing and restoring their featherweights. Great job
That's a great idea. I'll think about that.
Just fabulous! I caved and bought the repro case, but keep thinking … maybe! So great!
Go for it!
I am working on a case for my 1939 Featherweight as I watch this, and my workshop is also my bedroom. All of the hardware was in terrible shape, as well as the black fabric. The wood is so dry (Desert living, dry climate is hard on wood!) and there were a few huge splinters that came off. I am trying to think how I can do something to make this work. I originally hoped to stain and varnish, adding my own common hardware. I am about to abandon this project in favor of sewing a bag for it. What a lot of work! You were lucky to have a case in such good shape to begin with.
You could recover the wood with an upholstery maybe??? I've seen some do that and they are really cool looking
If you still have your case and want to strengthen it, there are products that will do that. I watch The Repair Shop on RUclips which is filmed in England. They repair and restore all sorts of collectibles and antiques from dolls to clocks…basically everything. It’s one of my favorite shows; lots of thrilled people telling stories of why the objects mean so much to them and lots of happy tears all around too. I digress; the young man that does the woodworking uses several products to fill woodworm holes and strengthen whatever he’s restoring. If you or anyone else out there is looking to repair an old case, you might consider contacting them for information on what products to use.
Beautiful job !!
Thank you!
Really enjoyed this video. Nice collection.
Thanks so much!
Your Lucinda Rose is beautiful! Thank you for this video. My husband watched it too. Who knows...maybe we will paint my FW. Her name is Wava Mae, after my Grandmother.
Thank you. I love her "sew" much. I plan to use her tonight to work on the Prairie Meadow quilt block 3. Good luck if you decide to do it.
You have explained this so well that I am going to try this with my case, Thank you
Oh!! I'm so glad you found it helpful. I tried to remember all the things I learned to share with others. Good luck and keep me posted!
This was Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Haha...I can appreciate your efforts...you get A+... hope you do another video 👩🏻🎨🐏
thank you.
Fun! Great video Lora!
Hey, friend!!! Thanks for watching.
You are so talented. Thank You for sharing the process for repurposing your feather weight and case. You did such a fabulous job How Fun!! Great job ❤️ her name!
Thank you so much!
Nice job!
Thank you
Your case and Machine are Beautiful. Your video has very good info .Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much!
So fun!!
Thanks
I tried all that on my case plus Charcoal, sawdust, & I tried clear coating, Nothing works, I might try your avenue. Love the color!!!
Good luck!
Good for you to be so careful with the various parts of your Featherweight.
Thanks. It was definitely a labor of love.
Great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
You're very interesting, the machine and the case look beautiful.
Thank you very much!
I have three treadles, 2 Singers & a Pfaff, a 301 Singer, a 1954 Singer ( year I was born) , a Spartan ( work horse) , Kenmore, Serger & an industrial overlook. My children go " do you really need all these sewing machines?". They just don't understand the beauty of the machines & different functions. If I had more room I would have more.
Ha. I understand. They are addicting
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Your machine looks great. Man do I know that smell of a featherweight case. My 1932 case is in good share but the smell will make you sick, literally. My last quilt retreat my machine even stunk to the point I was putting Vicks under my nose. My case is now in a corner and when I need to travel again I’ll come up with something but it will never be in the case again.
I understand completely. Thanks for watching
Ha ha ...Lori Holt.....I really love it!.....makes me want a cricket too...I do like Lori Holt stuff too....guess I ll not bug ya anymore but great great job👩🏻🎨🐑🐏
thank you
Thank you SO much for your honest and helpful information in restoring this beautiful machine! I am hoping to do some similar restorations myself and your advice has helped answer some questions I was wondering about moving forward. I do have one silly question for you, which you may have mentioned in your video and I missed it as my 4 year old grandson was visiting while I was watching it. My question is this: Is there a reason you chose not to paint the accessory/thread box that sits at the top left of the featherweight case? I just purchased a new featherweight and it also has the same box. I'm just thinking that painting it would be pretty and using your Cricut to add some roses there would also be nice, but there may be a reason NOT to paint it. Again, your work is beautiful and you are so kind to share your experiences with us.
No reason, really. I left the machine two-tone with some black pieces and just decided to do the same with the case... just my design choice.
Awesome job !! Lovely treasure. Can you share how much it cost for the paint job?
My husband worked a deal in trade. So, my cost was not what it should have been.
Your video is Great!!! I Love, Love your Teal machine!!! I want my to be paint mine teal also! You did such a great job on it sooooo beautiful! My sewing room walls are teal and it has been my favorite color since i was a wee one. Can you give out the price it was to have it painted
or a ball park price?? Thanks sooo much!🤩🤩
I fell in love with teal in the early 90s when Chevrolet put out the Beretta. I wanted one so bad... my Mom indulged me and allowed me to paint my bedroom that color. The local paint shop owner was a friend and she custom-mixed the latex paint for my room.
My sewing machine... my husband worked a deal with the guy because he was also working on cars for us. We ended up paying him around $400, but I have another $100 in the paint for the case. Prices vary depending on their process, expertise, etc. I feel I did well with price and timeline. I didn't have to wait 6 months to get it done. :)

thank you!
I would love to own a featherweight but they’re very pretty expensive.
If you're serious about finding one, watch auctions, rummage sales, etc. I got mine through a sewing machine dealer. It wasn't as bad as a new sewing machine.
So interesting. How would you go about finding a good working Featherweight. Have had a bad experience on E Bay…..
I worked with a local quilt shop that gets machines occasionally... I've also purchased one from a friend and one from fb marketplace. That one i insisted on lots of photos and a video and phone call. They're out there. Good luck.
Wow what a great video. Your machine and case are beautiful! My questions: did you have to literally disable each side of the case in order to glue them back together with the wood glue? When you had the machine painted did YOU COVER ALL HOLES or rely on the painter to do so? Were there any issues with disassembly and reassembly on the fit?
I’ve got two machines: one from 1940 and another from 1954. This video has me thinking! Hope to hear back from you and thanks!❤
I'm not sure what you mean by disabling the sides of the case. The case stank to high heaven so i got all the glue off and sanded it down before gluing it back together. It wasn't all the way apart, though.
I worked with the painter to ensure he understood where not to get paint but he covered the holes because his taping skills are definitely more advanced than mine.
@@lorabrinkman I’m sorry-either autocorrect or I didn’t ask right! What I was trying to say was after cleaning, did you actually take the case sides apart
, apply glue then put them back together? My luck and I’d break one of the pieces off trying to refit it! Thanks!
@@jodiepotter6029 the corners are dovetail joints so even with all the glue removed they stayed together. I had wood glue with a fine tip and i just sort of squeezed it in there to reglue. I did not take the sides apart. Although, the bottom was basically off and 2 sides of the top came off and i reglued those into place.
Does the Feather weight shop trade internationally and do you have an address. I have just got my British 222k out of the attic. Both case and machine in excellent order, but had get an expert to sort out the timing. As the electricals don’t pass current regulations in the UK. I would probably benefit from a new foot control with new wiring even though it is in good condition. My machine was bought for me back in the 50s, I kept it having been offered a derisory price in part exchange. Glad I did, reminds me of how hard my mother saved to get it for me. I love your machine renovation.
I don't know. I'm not affiliated with them. You would need to contact them.
I want to do this!! If i can figure out how to take it apart, how much am i looking to spend on the paint job? Was it terribly costly? I know it'll pay off in the end, but I'm just curious about the investment.
It was a job to take apart and even more to put back together... but worth it. The paint job is going to depend on who and where... we got a deal because my husband "knew a guy". Good luck.
Oof. Using straps was smart but i would have put some planks of wood between case and straps to prevent dings from the metal on the straps.
Bumper option: pool noodle?
It worked fine, but very good advice.
@@lorabrinkmani edited comment to also ask if a bumper option could be a pool noodle??
That might work... it may be too big though
Linda máquina dê costura.👏🧵
Thank you
You look like you just showered (I know not the point of video) but I was thinking how great your skin is and how perfect your completion is. How do you keep it that way? Mine is light also but now I'm all freckly..😢... I also am in love with your cute sewing machine it has a beautiful complextion too 😊
Ha!! Real life. I think i had just showered and washed my hair. I rarely wear makeup anymore. Once i stopped, my skin cleared up.
Love the color. Question for you can you please tell me what pattern that is for your quilt in the wall. LOVE IT. ❤
The quilt is a design by Lori Holt called My Happy Place. :)
@@lorabrinkman thank you so much. Can you send me a full picture of it.
@@phoebevercoe8571 If you look back in my instagram... somewhere around march 2022 i have lots of photos of it. I also show it in flosstube 14 at the beginning. :)
How hard is it to buy a featherweight and what do they run in price, thanks
I would caution anyone from buying online unless you know about them. In person would be better. Price just really depends on where you find it, the condition, and if it's a rare model. They range anywhere from $20 yard sale find to $2000 custom painted from a dealer.
Linda demais emocionante 😍
Thank you! I really love it. :)
I found one finally last week for 180.00 my case stunk too. I started stripping it beacuse it had duck tape on the bottom part and in the inside drained in oil. The machine has many scratches so still debating on the paint color.
Thank you for the tips
I want to find a pattern to make a tote fir it too
I ended up purchasing a canvas tote bag from The Featherweight Shop. I got the one that is a shade of teal.. not an exact match, but close enough. I need to order some Riley Blake vivid to make a spool pin dresdan that matches and a faceplate protector. She isn't travelling much until February, so I have a bit of time. Good luck with your machine. :)
how much did you spend for painting....etc total?
I don't share the cost of painting, because my husband negotiated a deal for me. :)
linda de mais, amei
Thanks
Do you sell the pattern for the quilt behind you
It's Lori Holt's design, my Happy Place
thank you.. vintage machines are the best!
I like green a lot but wouldn't dare to change the color of my Featherstone. If I did, I would choose the Elna green. Then I would have a Featherhopper.
I definitely understand. As I mentioned, my machine was mechanically sound, but cosmetically in need of a little TLC. I really do love the result. I love "featherhopper". HA!
💙💙💙🤌💋
🤗
I do hate that you feel you have to apologise to the Featherweight purists though… it’s your machine, you can do what you want! (I want an Octane Orange one… or a nice butter yellow or bumblebee yellow one … or hot pink or soft pink - But I really can’t decide so it’s probably best I stick with just watching other people’ s ones 😂)
Well... it's just acknowledging that it isn't everyone's thing really.
hello very beautiful sewing machine please kindly film how to operate the sewing machine electric foot pedal how it's used to sew please OK?please kindly let me know OK?thank you very much
It just plugs into the machine like the original bakelite and you use it like any foot pedal for a sewing machine.
What “restoration “ not restriction!
have fun.
your end block looks like the size of a pool noodle.
It's a bit smaller than that but it could work
något jag vill prova
I do really love the transformation
