That is a beautiful machine. I became the lucky owner of a 1950 Singer 221 Featherweight in June, and I love how it stitches and how quiet it is. Great video!
It was a beauty! They all are. :)
They truly are beautiful!
Beautiful machine! I wish Singer would manufacture the vintage machines again. They really were top of the line! I have spent so much money on computerized sewing machines and they don't come close to the stitching of the vintage Singers. Thanks for the demo!
A lot of machines are available in Brasil. People who probably lost their mothers to CVD-19 think they are useless and sell them for a low price, since they have no idea of how they work and have no interest in learning from youtubers. The last "little black" (as we call the old Singers) I got was a "Verma", which I think is from India. I cleaned it and got it to work. I am very grateful for all the generous youtubers who make videos like this one. This lady and the others have already a place in Heaven.
Jen, you did a beautiful job on that little 221. Very well done!!!
Thank you!
Very impressive. I have a 1938 Featherweight that I have never used because I'm afraid of all the oiling it requires. Silly, I know. I thought it was so neat that the sound of the machine never changed with each additional layer of fabric. Thanks.
These little machines are so impressive! I want to encourage you to get the machine out, oil it and give it a try! I have a Featherweight series I am working on now, maybe some of the videos will be helpful to you. The first one especially, I show you what I do before I ever start to sew with a machine that is new to me. Good luck!
Gosh, just fantastic! Remarkable form, function and design. Very satisfying sound, too. Something most modern machines lack. Though i like hearing the “industrial” type Juki’s. Beautiful restoration work!
Thank you, I love how they all have a unique sound!
Beautiful
Yes, she was a beautiful machine!
I just purchased a 1940 221 that looks like this one. After watching several videos where the paint has chipped on the hand wheel, I'm really glad for the chrome around mine (like this 1939 model). I'm going to be cleaning it up when my supplies come. My friend had it professionally cleaned years ago but I was shocked how much tan lubricant they put on the gears--it's a gunky mess! My main concern is a clicking noise when it sews, like something is hitting around the needle plate. I'll have to figure that out.
Hi! Yes, the old grease you can find in these machines can be quite gunky! Usually there is way more grease than needed on the gears, a little really goes a long way! When you get to cleaning yours up, check the positioning finger of the bobbin case base under the needle plate. Sometimes the little springs on the underside of the plate need to be adjusted so there is less room for that finger in between them. You need just enough room for thread clearance but too much will create a clicking noise. Good luck with your restoration!
Beautiful work on this machine, this reminded me of the sewing machine. Sound made by my great grandmother's sewing machine. That I heard as a child, wow !!! the throat space on this machine. Is so narrow it's a wonder how anyone would have been able to sew dresses on this machine.
Can you imagine trying to machine quilt a bed sized quilt? I guess that is why they hand quilted everything! I just love how they sound and what beautiful stitches!
Luckly, the Chinese bobbin case works well. I learned a lot from various sources and got very surprised a 221 can sew 16 lays of cotton. Many thanks for letting us know.
I am glad the aftermarket bobbin case worked for you! I have heard mixed reviews and it is good to know that there are some out there that will work well. Vintage bobbin cases can cost a pretty penny! And the 221’s are small but mighty! They were definitely made to handle all kind of sewing tasks for the home seamstress, not like a lot of the machines on the market today sadly.
I have not had luck with Chinese repro bobbins cases -- at least the ones selling on ebay @@SewingMachineRehab
You just have to love these machines! I had to come check out your channel. Being the sewing machine nerd that I am I HAD to subscribe to your channel! Also thanks for checking out my channel!
Yes, they are just so cool! Thanks for stopping by, I will be on the lookout for your next video!
Hi I just recently got a Featherweight machine and was wondering if I could have you restore it for me. How can I contact you?
My First 221 came with 3 parts broken and of course no bobbin case. I had to sell it.
My third 221 came with the cable completely broken.
Sweet machine! Will it sew thin leather?
Hi! Yes, you can sew through a thin leather with a Featherweight but if I had to choose I would probably use a Singer 301, 99 or 404 if I were doing that. But if it was something you only needed to do a couple times it could manage it, they just were not made with leather in mind.
My fourth 221 came okay, I guess. I didn't dare to unattach the pedal.
Hi Jen, I love the sewing sound of the machines you restore; they’re much quieter and have a softer sound. What cleaning/oiling tips can you give to lessen the sewing noise on the machine? I have a 221 machine arriving soon and the sewing video sounds like a truck, lol.
Hi! The noises can come from many different issues. A commutator that needs polished, feed dogs hitting the needle plate or just dry points that need to be oiled. As you work through the process of restoring the machine I bet you will work out any noises you come across. I love the sound of every machine, they are all a little different and each time I hear one sewing it just thrills me. Maybe I am a little strange. :) Good luck and reach out if you have any questions!
Are you still doing this?
Hi! Yes I am! Working on a Featherweight at this moment. :) I had a surgery that I had to recover from but I have been back to work the last few days, finally!
My second 221 came without the bobbin case and without the pedal. The pedal you're using is the Chinese product?
Hi! It sounds like you have had several 221’s! I haven’t had to use an aftermarket bobbin case yet and I have heard really mixed reviews about them. On this machine I did use a electronic foot control, and yes, it was made in China. I also restore the foot controllers but sometimes my customers prefer the newer electronic style.
