Stuff that keeps me awake at 3am

  • When you have a busy brain you can sometimes end up lying there awake in the wee small hours thinking about things that are totally ridiculous. I called this video things that keep me awake at 3am because that’s usually the time I end up lying there awake, but there have been many other ungodly times I’ve seen!
    Here are the top 10 things that keep me awake:
    10. Snoring
    9. Being annoyed with myself that I’ve dreamed about spreadsheets
    8. The exact process of something complicated that I’m planning to do the next day
    7. Rehearsing what I’m going to say in any given situation
    6. A song that’s gotten stuck in my head
    5. An interesting chapter of a Bill Bryson book
    4. Injustice - I’m not Batman, but injustice keeps me awake
    3. What I would do if I was burgled
    2. Mice
    1. Any noise ever post mice!
    I wouldn’t say that I really suffer massively from lack of sleep, I am able to sleep most of the time, but at least once or twice a week I have a rough night due to one of these culprits.
    The way I deal with this is to acknowledge that if I give these things head space I will struggle more to get back to sleep. I try to break the ‘lying awake in bed’ part of things by going to the toilet or getting a drink. Just being out of bed momentarily and having to think about motor functions can sometimes help to break the chain of thought. Then I go back to bed and put on an audio book using my ‘sleepy ears’. My brain isn’t able to focus on two things at once, so it can either block out the story and keep thinking nonsense, or it can listen to the story and block out the nonsense, so usually I force myself to listen to the story and I’ll just drift off quite easily after that.
