Texas and Simple Minds on the same night... what a dream
I was down near the front, one of the best line-ups I have ever seen. The Silencers, GUN, Texas and then Simple Minds!!!!
Was at this concert as a 15 year old with my older sister . Fell in love with Texas that day . I had seen the odd song from that show , but it’s great to see the whole set . My memory served me well . They did do sweet child o mine as an encore 👍😂🤘x
Loved this gig. One of my favourite live concert experiences, hearing all Wembley symbiotically singing U2’s 40 at the end of “Thrill has gone”. Charlene’s puzzled look and then embracing the moment. Just brilliant! Gun and the silencers also supporting. Oh and Simple Minds were simply at their best that night, it was a fantastic celebration of Scottish music.
I was there too. I've always loved the way the band just gave up and embraced what the crowd were singing. Fantastic experience.
That moment with the crowd is amazing. So spontaneous yet it worked perfectly. A pity the quality of the video is so blurry, but It doesn't matter, I can watch it once and again and imagine I am there anyway (I was 7 at the time so of course I wasn't).
Re: U2
They also played “Pride” on the screens pre-gig and the crowd went off it to that!

@@spud74 so there was a few playing that night?
Wow! What an incredible gig and seeing this again, the memories come flooding back. One of the best days of music I've ever had. Completely forgotten how good Texas were. Brilliant, just brilliant.
First time I saw them , that year Liverpool Poly student union - free admission , never forget the gig - they were awesome - small venue brought the house down - had no idea how big they'd become !
Jeez free......shame was not recorded
Cf mott ?
I only came across this a week ago and have watched it several times. I can’t think of a video that has done more to take me back to my carefree days. The performance is almost perfect. Many of us there will also have been at U2 in 85 and 87, Simple Minds in 86, some even there to witness U2 ‘win’ Live Aid. Texas were in their infancy but nearly stole the show. The way Sharleen goes from dealing with that oh so 80’s chant of ‘get your t*ts out for the lads’ to having those same lads eating out of the palm of her hands was brilliant. The fusion of U2’s ‘40’ into Thrill Has Gone worked so well, and when they wanted the song back they did it in style.
A great day, great memories. Just seeing a proper crowd, no phones. Take me back!
Thank you so much for sharing those great memories! ❤️
Drove 3 hours to see them in San Juan Capistrano 1989. Incredible. They owned the audience like few bands can. Magical night.
I was there that day. Watching this has brought back amazing memories.
Great voice & music ,very nice looks, face ,Rhythm .Thank you very much Sharleen. Spiteri .
Thanks for posting this video. I too was there. A great day. Hadn't liked Texas's music til I saw them that day. Brilliant in concert. Have lost count of the number of times I've seen them live. Hopefully in 2021 again

How was Texas?
Thanks for posting.. legendary
I was there, Gun on before Texas. Damp and steamy Wembley with all the rain and heat from the fans.
Moje Piękne Wspomnienia z Zespół Texas 🙂😘❤️💚✌️
She is Magic, Can't believe I Knew Nothing of this,
Texas in general?
I hadn’t heard of Texas or Gun before I went to this Simple Minds gig at Wembley Stadium but left really impressed and bought Southside as soon as I could a great day and the rain didn’t dampen everyone’s spirits
Great band and mesmeric front woman
Amazing band, amazing music and that lady, makes me crazy.
Seen them them at meadowbank stadium 89 excellent.
This is bloody amazing
18:29 I Don't Want A Lover. Brutal
Great Excellent Music.I just wish SimpleMinds Had Recorded Their Set
Well, the Texas set was aired on TV, I suppose. Maybe someone has recorded the SM's set too, you just need to search for it.
@@TexasbandFansite simple minds had all thier outdoor UK gigs recorded that summer. They just never released footage for some unknown reason.

Really is that a fact that Simple Minds filmed all the UK open air dates on this Street Fighting Years tour? I'm absolutely astonished if that's the case that they havnt released it, particularly this one given everyone who was there says they played a blinder. I was interested to hear an interview with Queen's Roger Taylor years back where he said its not easy playing Wembley Stadium... Said he'd seen bands die there because they hadn't won the crowd and it is so palpable... Sea of indifference ripples out and you're adrift. Mentions Simple Minds and U2 as being rare examples (along with Queen!) of those who owned it. (In so many words.)
There is some of it here, I was there and Texas somewhat unknown at that
time almost stole the Show.

What a great concert this must've been. Wish i had attendet it.
Ally, we miss you
At 9:40 the crowd are singing "get your t*ts out for the lads". Sharleen responds: "maybe later, it depends on how good an audience you are", Just before that she says "I haven't got any, sorry boys" - I don't know what that's in response to.
My first ever gig this!
Great....what did you think?
@@shaunbat5097 Sound. Obviously there for Simple Minds having got into them after “Once Upon A Time/City of Light” but I knew of Texas, and Gun, prior to going and thought they were both great. Big debut for Texas mind!
Wasn’t familiar with the other band.
I was sat at the back on the bend left of stage, admiring all the piss heads bouncing about, one getting chased by police round the standing section for about ten minutes before getting clothes lined by another punter.
Then there was the woman getting picked up and dunked in a big puddle that had gathered in the creases of the floor canvas- great fun for a then 14 year old!!!
Impresionanteeee...👏👏👏🎸🔊🎶😘
She is a Scottish legend 🏴
Yeah kick on🏴☔🏴
i was there but you would never of guessed .. lol
Best Texas 4ever!
Loved Southside but cant stand anything they have done since.
Best support act Simple Minds have ever had are the Silencers fantastic band piss all over Texas.
I love you Sharleen !!!!!
I was a uni student at the time and was working as a steward at that concert. Mad that I have found it on RUclips. I was allowed to go off duty to watch one band that day - I chose Texas. What a brilliant set and I still remember them singing Sweet Child of Mine. Where have the years gone!!!
Scary.....time goes too fast
Bloody heĺ I was there...Support for Simple Minds..
14:46 Fight The Feeling. Excelente
I was there. Texas simply stole the show! One single hour of magic!
I can hardly remember anything about the Simple Minds set, but the Texas performance is forever etched.
I was there too. I’m a HUGE simple minds fan, and I was very, very disappointed by thier crappy show that day, but Texas were INCREDIBLE. I felt they totally upstaged simple minds that day, took them to school. So sad because the minds used to be such an amazing live band back in the 82-84 era
@@Bradonomous Not a chance you must have been at a different gig to me. The thing I remember the most was the crappy weather. It was red hot and sunny at the Cardiff arms park gig a couple of weeks earlier.
Wow, that's interesting to hear about the SM set not locking in so to speak. I've read elsewhere it was superb, wonder if where you were and or sound mix front of house was to blame at all? I'm interested as to why it didn't work as I'm also a big fan, bit young to have seen them then but caught them in the early 2000s at Hammersmith when they were out of fashion and it was a ridiculously brilliant show, just absolutely a blinder, playing as though they meant every second. A bootleg exists and its astonishing. Verona 89 amazing.... What went wrong in your eyes/ears at this stadium show?
I was there with my brother. R.I.P John
I'm so sorry! May your brother rest in peace! ❤
Sorry, from México Brother
Great memories for you!👌
🏴☔🏴
Confidence oozing out of Sharleen even at that young age.
Gun s and roses Yesssssss

Oh dear.
I'd posit that the wrong act was opening.
Ally McEllaine sure goes about his work very well!
Can't believe it's been 40 ( sorry, 30, maths ' was never my thing😅) years. We, the wife and I, were upgraded to the Olympic gallery as soon as we arrived. No idea why. Excellent show from a quite unknown Texas at the time.
Cool that you have been there, but 40?! Please don't make us all older than we already are, it's only 30 years (Ok, 31 now)...
God I panicked then when you said 40 years, thought I'd lost 10 years of my life. I knew the E I took that day at Wembley was good but not that good 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi Steve, you most probably got upgraded because the security were panicking because everyone wanted to be on the pitch not in stands. If you remember stands were quite empty for ages and bad crushing was happening. I was talking to security and they said it was getting really bad so they were forcing people into seating. So lucky you for good upgrade. Good on ya.
Not 40 pal. 30 possibly?
Why did she name her band Texas? I'm from Texas and I'd never heard of her or this band. It's pretty darn good!
Because of the Wim Wenders' film 'Paris, Texas', Sharleen and Johnny love it very much)
@@TexasbandFansite Thank you. I wondered. That makes sense.
42:20 Unforgottable moment: Does anyone know who started to sing 40 by U2 that day?
For some reason '40' by U2 was often sung at Texas gigs. I saw Texas at the Town & Country Club in Kentish Town, north London (it's now called The O2 Forum) later that year - I think it was in September or October, 1989. I went both nights they played, and the crowd sung '40' at those shows too.
@@jeffoliver7491 Thanks for your response. '40' was a popular song during the eighties for that kind of audiences (Simple Minds fans in this case). Besides, I guess the chords in both songs ('40' / 'Thrill has gone') are similar. But I think this was the first time that someone connected them, considering the reaction on stage.
@@Ondulante No problem. I remember at one of the two Texas shows I went to in London in late-1989 Sharleen stopped, smiled, and observed the crowd as they sung 40 - then resumed the song they had been playing - I think it was "Thrill Has Gone". I enjoyed both shows that year. "Prayer For You" was hard to recreate live, it was just Ally on his acoustic guitar - on the record there is the acoustic guitar throughout and there are blasts of electric guitar here and there aswell, they were absent in the live version. All other songs sounded similar to the album versions though.
@@Ondulante yes I remember Charlene looking pretty bemused to what we were singing, seem to have a word with Johnny who must of let her in on it. A magic moment and glad you guys remember is as fondly as I do.
What a memory, singing “40” I seem to remember started in the area where I was, about 40 yards back, along with the iconic 80’s ballad, “get your t*ts out for the lads” 😂😂😂 wouldn’t get away with that these days! Carefree times, no mobile phones, people living in the moment… albeit a very wet moment! Take me back!
Why haven't I heard of this band before now? Sounds good
Smile

as much as i love Sharlene ,should not have covered sweet child of mine
