- Monty Python - International Hairdressers Expedition on Everest
Voice Over: Mount Everest. Forbidding. Aloof. Terrifying. This year, this remote Himalayan mountain, this mystical temple, surrounded by the most difficult terrain in the world, repulsed yet another attempt to conquer it. This time, by the International Hairdresser's Expedition. In such freezing, adverse conditions, man comes very close to breaking point. What was the real cause of the disharmony which destroyed their chances at success?
First Climber: Well, people would keep taking your hairdryer and never returning it.
Second Climber: There was a lot of bitching in the tents.
Third Climber: You couldn't get near the mirror.
Voice Over: The leader of the expedition was Colonel Sir John 'Teasy-Weasy' Butler, veteran of K2, Annapurna, and Vidals. His plan was to ignore the usual route around the South Col and to make straight for the top.
Colonel: We established base salon here, and climbed quite steadily up to Mario's here. From here using crampons and cutting ice steps as we went, we moved steadily up the Lhotse Face to the North Ridge, establishing camp three where we could get a hot meal, a manicure, and a shampoo and set.
Voice Over: Could it work? Could this eighteen-year old hairdresser from Brixton succeed where others had failed? The situation was complicated by the imminent arrival of the monsoon storms. Patrice takes up the story.
Patrice: Well, we knew as well as anyone that the monsoons were due, but the thing was, Ricky and I had just had a blow dry and rinse, and we couldn't go out for a couple of days.
Voice Over: After a blazing row, the Germans and Italians had turned back, taking with them the last of the hair nets. On the third day a blizzard blew up. Temperatures fell to minus thirty centigrade. Inside the little tent, things were getting desperate.
Ricky: Well, things have got so bad that we've been forced to use the last of the heavy oxygen equipment just to keep the dryers going.
Woman: Cup of Milo, love.
Ricky: Oh, she's a treas.
Voice Over: But a new factor had entered the race. A team of French chiropodists, working with brand new corn plasters and Doctor Scholl's Mountaineering Sandals, were covering ground fast. The Glasgow Orpheus Male Voice Choir were tackling the difficult North Col. Altogether, fourteen expeditions were at his heels. This was it. Ricky had to make a decision.
Patrice: Well, he decided to open a salon.
Voice Over: It was a tremendous success.
Advert Voice: Challenging Everest? Why not drop in at Ricky Pules' - only 24,000 feet from this cinema. Ricky and Maurice offer a variety of styles for the well-groomed climber. Like Sherpa Tensing and Sir Edmond Hillary be number one on top, when you're Number One on Top! - Приколы
The team of French chiropodists actually made it to the summit, which was no mean feet.
They spoke with their feet and made a pied announcement.
Brilliant, even before 7:00 am.this morning, lol.
focus is everything; they accomplished their sole purpose....
They proved it by the most marvelous footage.
Sans pied ?
35 years after I first saw this sketch, whenever I dump my fishing gear before having a look at the river (or arrive on a beach), I still think to myself "Where shall I set up base salon?".
Haha love it 😂
Pinching that, that's brilliant 😂
😂😄😄😄😄😄
That's great!!🤣👍
Bass salmon?
The Glaswegian Orpheus Choir couldn't quite get a Handel on it, so they went Bach down to bass camp.
Some of the greatest comic geniuses of all time, were the ensemble known as Monty Python.
Legends of comedy.
A Python sketch in 1972, a documentary in 2023.
i thought i had seen and knew every monty python sketch ever made...dont know how i missed this gem, gives hope that there is still more out there.
same... i used to have a 15 DVD box set, maybe i missed this one!
It's a first for me .

I was a Monty Python addict. PBS, Ch 12, Philadelphia aired it 11pm weekday nights and I would watch religiously. Got my Sister hooked and even my Father couldn't help himself. The most sublimely ridiculous comedy ever. Love it.
I could have had that life, but my parents wouldn't allow me to watch it.
Oh my god ...Same here !!! WHYY ...Channel 12 ...back in the days of 48 , 29 17 ...and 3, 6 and 10 ...found THE GOODIES on PBS too
Sometimes I thought it was getting TOO silly.
But usually the army would step in before things got out of hand.
WHYY had all the "Britcoms" back in the day! Monty Python, Mr. Bean, Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances, etc.
Me too!
This sketch was so far ahead of it's time. Now everybody really does want to climb Everest.
Exxxactly my thoughts. Join the sheep 🐑
The stairs make it so much easier.
I’m waiting til they install the escalator
It's what lead to the rainbow valley
Whool i then ..whool i then.. so BEH the local sheep.. BEH the local sheep.. right on top of the fine pine tree together with Herald..
FLY AWAY !
FLY AWAY !
"Well, he decided to open a salon." kills me every time. A hair-raising tale that tops them all!.
I must say Rick Pule's Salon has always come to my rescue after days of wind tossed climbing, evenings of fine dining, dancing and romance with the Sherpas.
Oh Jaysus, please stop!!,😂
Most people think of male hairdressers as not being very tough, but this proves you should never prejudge people.
Ricky's, the toughest hair salon on Everest.
Hillaryous!
I'll ava numba 1 cumbu ta
Comedy movie proves what about barbers
Haha
This was fringe comedy at it's most cutting edge.
No fridge here!
Life imitates art. Climbing mt everest has become even more farcical than this sketch.
They did say "the biggest tits in the world."
This is one of my favorite MP sketches; this, and the climbing of the Uxbridge Road.
I've climbed it many a time when I were a yooong lad, and it were a luuuxury.
You guys both should join me and my twin brother to the expedition to Kilimanjaro under the world famous Head brothers!

Bloody brilliant ... after five decades the humour still hits the right dry spot.
Oh she's a treasure, that get's me every time.
I love how they set it up with a serious sounding narrator in a documentary form! Total silliness!
The narrator is a frequent feature of Python. One of the funniest is the sketch of the premiere of 'Holy Grail' at a cinema. When proceedings get delayed, the TV commentator to fill in time, switches over to another commentator for a very detailed description of the car park behind the cinema, where parking is arranged in a crescent formation, was opened in 1947 by Gary Cooper and is self-draining.
Still made me laugh. As a long time tine bushwalker. When setting up camp I still ask the question - "where should we set up base salon"
There's always SO much bitching in the tents! And beating about the bush!
The only side of life I love is watching people not take themselves too seriously clowning around. That bloke with the teeth cracked that bird up.
"… taking with them the last of the hairnets." Somehow I missed this sketch 48 years ago!
There's only one Monty Python's Flying Circus! Rule Brittania! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
what foresight, to imagine the congestion that happens on Everest these days - Ricky Pules salon would do a great passing trade
"there was a lot of bitching in the tents..." genial!
“Be number one on top when you’re number one on top” - perfect punch line for the sketch
Absurdist humour at It's best.
The world needs more of this.
"Dr. Scholl's Mountaineering sandals"! Tres chic en la mont!
What about Watney's Red Barrel?
I remember this when it first aired on TV, I think it was in the early to mid 70's sometime. I was watching TV with my Dad and Monty Python's Flying Circus came on. When they said "biggest tits" my Dad nearly crapped himself --
"They can't say "tits" on TV" ... Can they say "tits" on TV?" ... "They just said "tits" on TV, didn't they?"
That was considered very racy back then. It was the first time either of us had ever heard anyone say "tits" on TV.
Now I want to hear John Cleese say every possible word for ‘tits’.
It was one of the seven words you couldn’t say on tv, as identified by George Carlin in his monologue. Maybe British tv was different and they snuck it by the censors. By the way, Grand Tetons are grande............
What did they think of the actual nudity?
@@kerryedavis Nudity was acceptable in the U.K. as long as completely unattractive nudes were employed.
@@TheSoundsage the newsstand girl was not unattractive.
The title alone is funnier than almost all comedians today.
Brilliant irreverent humour at its British best - sadly long gone and much needed now!
Probably, sadly, it would not be allowed now - just think of the thousands that their humour would offend !
Yooooooouuuuu haven't seen Cunk, have you?
Chiropodists using Dr . Scholls mountaineering sandals. ...

@@60skidlostinspaceSorry, Patrice is booked solid until April.
When the Monty Python and His Flying Circus came out in S. Fla, in the early 1970's I was a teenager looking for the best wit and humor around. This exactly filled the bill.
Monty Python's Flying Circus was and is the best. Their skits were absolutely great.
Thank you BBC for the best humor in the history of the world.
I endorse that!
Mark McCarty As freshmen we ended every evening with them thanks to public television.
Thank you BBC? Have you ever seen Monty Python's takes on BBC Programming Directors?
He might not be British, the US' public station is PBS
Don't thank the BBC, they had no idea what Monty Python was, they only knew that they were Oxbridge types (From the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge) and let them in because they were snobs. As to Monty Python's comedy the BBC never understood it or appreciated it, they just knew it was popular.
Even funnier now that Everest expeditions have become some common and commercialized today.
Yeah, that map of routes taken (2m22) might well be a realistic view of how things are today, people have to be walking in line to reach ...
Oh wait..
That map proves, no one really kept in line !
No wonder so many freeze to death up there.
Boy did they ever predict the future, decades ago!
I got a pair of those Dr. Scholl's Mountaineering Sandals! They are great! I use them on every single ascent above 3.000 m and they always carried me till the top! :-)
Yes, and your feet are still dress-sandal ready when you get down!
Must have been a limited edition. I can’t find them on their website now.
Lol 😂
Fantastic
A hair-raising tale that tops them all!

The Grand Teton mountains in Wyoming truly deserve their name.
Yep. Bunch of French explorers hadn't seen a woman in four years.
"Alors, look a' de teet on dat one."
It never ceases to amaze me how far ahead of the curve these guys were doing this in the late 60s early 70s, this kind of comedy was pedestrian by the 00s juxtaposing two realities to create absurdity but they'd already done it all 4 decades before everyone and now everyone else is just repeating what they did.
Not to mention Everest is literally like that these days, with everyone trying to be the narrowest superlative to be the "first" to climb to the peak. It's like the world's deadliest amusement park ride.
Old english is most similar to german
16 years ago We all laughed ....Now I hesitate to share it .
Many decades ago The Goons did a TV cartoon of the team mounting an expedition to get a Grand piano to the top of Everest. I thing the Python team were probably inspired by the efforts of Minnie and co.
SOOO ahead of their time!
“It was terrible! We had to use the last of the heavy oxygen equipment just to keep the blow-dryers going 😮! …”

I love how John Cleese just looks his usual self.
Monty Python was way ahead of its time. They could have done a skit today on the "Rainbow Space Force". But maybe not. They will be cancelled immediately by very serious people who do not see the humor in it.
Humour
01:57 I have no idea why, but John Cleese is brilliant here. He has no lines whatsoever but somehow he's hilarious.
I thought the same XD
I think he actually mumbles Bitch to the lady lol

It's been a lot easier to summit since the invent of the blow dryer gun, love. You just need a good solid holster, don't you.

Damn, this skit is like a prophecy
Recently worked on a construction site with a rough as guts machine operator who was previously a hairdresser for 20 years. I said "Barber?", he said "no, Hairdresser" so that clarified that.
Im glad they pronounced chiropodist correctly. My Nan was a chiropodist and hated people pronouncing it shiropidist. At her funeral the vicar said "she was a shiropodist for 40 years" we could imagine her spinning in her coffin!! love Monty python!!
I always chiropodist, never chiropodist
In America, it's mostly "shiropodist". You can't legislate language change. That's why modern English is different from Old and Middle English. I can imagine some sticks in the mud complaining back in the day how people should use the proper form "thou" instead of the corrupt "you".
@@deanronson6331 Chiropodist is a derivative from the Greek - Heri (hand) and Pothi (foot). The CH is pronounced with the Greek and Semitic (Phoenician, Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian etc) H sound (a throaty sound that usually only native speakers can utter) not SH or K sounds. The CH is written in Greek with the Greek Chi (X)

As a high altitude mountaineer decades ago, I laugh so hard seeing this as it truly mocks one of the 'holiest' of British traditions. The claim that Brits had back in the early days to Everest and all top mountaineering in the world in those decades. A great clip.
