That was one of the most honestly emotional reactions I’ve seen to Floyd. You are either a really good actor, or you are feeling this music at a very deep soul level. And I honor your courage in allowing us to witness your vulnerability to the music. Many men would not. I mentioned earlier that David Gilmore is universally considered one of the most emotive guitarists EVER to grace us . Other guitarists are fabulous for other reasons and I love them too, but Gilmore can make you cry. Like you said, his guitar was singing gospel to us, and some Floyd is a spiritual experience. Keep feelin’ the music, man. I’ve been feelin’ Floyd for over 50 years.....Nothing like them. Ever.

Don't worry... that's pretty much how most people feel hearing this one for the first time. Speechless. And then the overwhelming need to listen to it again. You've just been to the church of Gilmour. With considerable help from Richard Wright on keyboards. Dick Parry on sax. Roger Waters the lyricist on vocals. You're doing it the right way. Let the music take you, and comment on lyrics when and if it moves you. In the end it's all subjective anyway as is most true art. "Welcome to the Machine" up next.

This song is a tribute to their former band member Syd Barrett who lost it on too much acid in the 60s and was let go while recording their second album, with David Gilmour replacing him (SYD = Shine on You crazy Diamond). Barrett turned up unannounced while Floyd were recording this album and had changed so much in the 6-7 years that they didn't recognise him for quite a while.

There are three more songs after this ("Welcome To The Machine", "Have A Cigar", "Wish You Were Here") and then the album returns to this song and plays the rest of it, which lasts about ten more minutes.

You are doing the right thing by listening to studio cuts first..and listening to albums in order and the tracks in order. That’s what they intended us to do, and that’s what we did. Usually in a darkened room with some good weed. I would suggest one thing though: After you’ve listened to the studio version of the song Comfortably Numb, I would strongly urge you to watch the live Pulse version. Gilmore’s extended guitar solo in this is legendary and considered some of the best guitar playing you will ever hear. His guitar cries, it preaches, it mesmerizes, and you owe it to yourself to not only hear it, but to see the master do it. Floyd doesn’t seem to block as much as Zeppelin or Eagles etc. most reactors seem to have no problem playing them either studio or live...Enjoy your musical journey young man. Peace out.

@@krypto_9872 That's good news! I think that blocking doesn't help, and the money they would have earned, they probably would have made back regardless from viewers who decided to buy a vinyl/cd of their albums. This really applies to pretty much all bands/musicians.

You are one of the first reviewers I've seen who identifies Pink Floyd's Gospel, Blues, and Jazz influence right from the start. They're like an operatic version of R&B.
And I think you're right about the sermonic element. It bridges both despair and hope, doesn't it?
When you do listen to The Wall, it's in some ways a commentary about the current state of the world.

My favourite Floyd track. It’s about a member of the band Syd Barrett that lost himself in psychedelics and was never the same again.

    • @izzonj
      @izzonj 3 года назад +2

I think the truth is that Syd Barrett probably suffered from a psychiatric disorder - bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, something like that. The drugs were part of the culture and he may have been self medicating. He just got deeper and deeper into his psychosis until his creativity was overtaken by his inability to function. It's a sad story. His band mates loved him and this is how they mourned his loss. At the she time they wished that the crazy diamond that was Syd Barrett would shine on...

    PINK FLOYD... THE G.O.A.T.
Pink Floyd is a very deep band... musically, lyrically, live performances (lights, sound & production), etc... 1965 - 2014!! Lots of goodness in all those years; honestly it's impossible to state what is their best stuff - that IMO is up to the listener.
    * I would recommend understanding the lyrics and or the entire album concept (yes, whole album's are one concept; well not all of them) yet you said, "You're simply listening." The easiest way to resolve not knowing if you decide to understand... the story or meaning behind the song or album is to look up the title on wikipedia and then if you wish the lyrics while listening (wearing headphones); you'll be glad you did. Pink Floyd is The G.O.A.T.!!!
I myself suggest: 1) "Comfortably Numb" 2) "Shine on you crazy Diamond" I-V 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" - - - Anything from the live "Pulse" DVD (1994) is phenomenal!! Here is a song listing (link) >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_(1995_film)#DVD_track_listing
Fact: "You don't need drugs to enjoy Pink Floyd but you definitely need Pink Floyd to enjoy your drugs!!"

Ha ha. Go ahead. Breathe. Take it in. Might I, a word of advice for the future!? Try and not let any of Floyd’s music breathe too much.I understand the overwhelming need to STOP and process, but you truly miss out when you do this because you take yourself out of the element just long enough to lose some of the power from it and emotion from it. Or at least part of it’s TRUE potential. The build up gets you ready for the blast off. It’s like stepping off a roller coaster to breathe before the big drop and triple loop. As much as you feel the need, try not to let it simmer for too long cause you might miss the punch or some of the punches. At least the way Pink Floyd intended for you to take them. Besides all that, Pink Floyd is masterful at letting it simmer just the right amount within this song; just enough to get the maximum emotion out of you. All that said, sometimes it’s easy for us Pink Floyd fans to forget how overwhelming it can be to hear it for the first time as well. So, I guess just do you, but try to keep that in mind.
In hindsight you actually did a great job of listening to it with minimal interruptions, soo... 👏👍👍👍

You feel music exactly the way I do. I've been playing guitar for 44 years. I feel every note.

Pink Floyd - Sorrow was the biggest soul hitter me personally. The music is just incredible.

Pink Floyd force visions into your head like jam into a doughnut. They provide a soundtrack to your imagination.

Love how you feel the music, bro! David Gilmour, the master of playing guitar with emotion. Have you heard the whole Dark Side Of The Moon album? Those two albums (Dark Side and Wish You Were Here) are my favorite Pink Floyd albums. Meddle is really good too.

Mary Margaret Moore those three albums to me are their peak. Not that the others are rubbish though. I know many rank Animals and The Wall equally.

Your reactions are so real. I love seeing you feel the music. I see you’ve reacted to some Yes already. How about Genesis? Firth Of Fifth, Cinema Show, Musical Box. Big musical journeys. Also Fleetwood Mac, The Chain. Anything from the Rumours album, but I would start with that. :-)

Best. Pink Floyd. Reaction. Ever. 💖 I grew up with this album, it feels like it's woven right into my cells, into my core. It's not just music. Your first time reaction is how I can still feel about it, but seeing you feeling it just adds to that tapestry of emotion. I feel like we all add to it. Thank you for making it visible to us so we can share. I was in tears and smiling too. Thank you x
