  • Spiritual bypassing (or whitewashing) is the act of using spiritual beliefs to avoid facing or healing one's painful feelings, unresolved wounds and unmet needs. It is a state of avoidance. Because it is a state of avoidance, it is a state of resistance. I personally, consider Spiritual bypassing to be the shadow side of spirituality.
The spiritual beliefs of any spiritual tradition, be it Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, New Age, Islamic, or even Self Help, can provide ample justification for living in a state of inauthenticity. They can all provide justification for avoiding the unwanted aspects of one's own feelings and state of being in favor of what is considered to be "a more enlightened state". In this episode, Teal Swan gives examples of spiritual bypassing and suggests ways that we can avoid doing it.

yeah, i've only just started to realise that i have a right to having feelings, i've been barely able to recognise them for well over 20 years, at times i didn't have any, and i thought it was because i didn't care about people. But i was actually so consumed by other peoples emotions, that i couldn't recognise or give credit to my own, and would just end up feeling numb.

Crazy Fox it only becomes a big issue with that kind of rhetoric, and mindset, everyone’s path in life is different, so we shouldn’t judge ourselves on what other people consider the norm

Spiritual bypassing seems to be a stage we need to go through as we spiritually evolve. I look at it like puberty.
If anyone watching this feels like you are at this stage, now you have a new awareness and this too shall pass as you move forward.

Teal has a gift. Personally, I don't find many spiritual teachers very useful, (with notable exceptions: Tolle, Thich Nhat Hanh, Viktor Frankl) because normally what they say is obvious or lacks new insights. Teal is continually offering useful and even profound insights. Thank you Teal. You are a gift to this world.

I have been saying this to myself for a while so I'm glad to hear her say it. What I think is funny, is that even if the caterpillar simply grew wings, it would still be an incredibly uncomfortable experience. Therefore, no matter what, real transformation will be difficult and painful.

    • @johnorian6761
      @johnorian6761 Год назад

It was at about this point that I realized that she was just spouting ideas, perhaps shared by others.
It isn't the 'butterfly' that dissolves, but the caterpillar that dissolves. The butterfly doesn't begin to form until the caterpillar becomes the genetic soup. The caterpillar doesn't know anything about the butterfly that its soup will become.

My personal experience with spirituality is absolutely natural. When i am in pain I stay fully present I dont drink or smoke or party Im literally crawling on the floor , crying and letting my body to do anything that makes my soul feel better , then slowly slowly i feel shift I cant even explain . I become aware on very deep level what exactly triggered me , I found so many traumas by being absolutely naked with my soul . That is how I felt spiritual , just feeling my inner world and recognising my inner wounds , dealing with them not by escaping them but accepting them . I am highly sensitive and I am very honest with myself , I am not scared of pain or fears , I invite them for a cup of tea and i listen to them carefully what they want to tell me . Only when i feel gradually shifted from pain to acceptance then clearance I do meditation . I never meditate when i am in big pain , I need to listen what it tells me and i need to be absolutely alone . That is my spirituality . I love to grow I love to listen to my body, emotions , feelings , i observe my thoughts. These helped me to heal so many wounds . And each and every time my wound is healed I feel shift i feel my energy on another level . My awareness too

This video makes me think. I've been walking this path for a while, and the LoA is very strong in my life. Recently I don't want to be "spiritual" any more. No tarot cards, no channeling, no stones, no labeling myself as "spiritual." I seriously just want to be happy, joyful and I desire love in my life. I want to create only goodness for myself. But I have no desire to be spiritual anymore. I still pray to my creator, and I try to be humble and kind. But I am so tired of spirituality and all the meditation and chakras and reiki and energy healing and the rest. My GOD I just want to be me and have a happy life. What happens then?

Sharon Eden Spirituality is whatever allows you to feel meaning and love in life. That doesn’t have to be anything that is “stereotypically spiritual.” It can range from just having fun in a video game that teaches a story about heroism and bravery. It can come in having a high profile career that dedicates to giving the poor financial advice in their start-up businesses. It can happen through being able to cook and bake sweets for some little kids looking for a snack. It can be by becoming a comedian throughout your family and friends to make people laugh in hard times. While I don’t agree with atheists, I do see their point of view when they say they’re “spiritual and not religious”. Because there is a difference between those two. A lot of people don’t realize that a lot of these practices are a means to an end of living a happy life, and not a way of living a happy life itself. Do what makes you happy as long as it doesn’t hurt people. Really.

I think that it mainly has to do with people wanting a quick and easy spike of joy. We all crave instant gratification somehow, but not a lot of people are willing to take the time to look at their internal vibrational state and just gradually go up the scale; it's definitely slower but at least you're actually feeling better than just taking a pill that you think will cure it all.

Yeah... I went through depersonalisation, emotional manipulation of oneself, denial of my "human needs", through unconsciously blaming others and losing power over my own subconscious behavior. The guilt for blaming others that is suppressed now is turned against me. Now I am a wreck of what I use to be, a shell with only pain inside that is eating me up. I used spiritual practices on force and brought on myself so much resistance and self hatred. But I won't give up, day by day I'm like learning to walk again. Thank you for your video, it was so insightful and related what I was going through.

Thanks so much for your honesty brain interpretation, I have felt much the same way for many years, pinpointed it, by it i mean the feeling of shame that is used to being perceived outwards and now shoots a dagger into my own being. Recently I have really delved into it, the anger at myself, it's like a knot of energy in my head. I have created an undesirable life and i don't want my life or accept my life, when indeed i have agreed to it on some level. I can't take the destruction this causes me anymore, so I went into the shame in a way that i never have before and used some of the forgiveness I have been applying to other people, to me. It (the forgiveness) has created some sort of ''parting of the seas' that allows the pain to alleviate. Anyway, that's how far i got with it lol. Not sure if that helps but your honestly was refreshing and much appreciated, thank you.

Same with me. 15 years of "ego dissolution", distancing myself from my actual needs and desires because someone who`s present wouldnt want for anything, not standing up for myself bc if I "react" that would only enforce my ego... Has left me in circumstances that I dont want and emotionally immature, with weak self-esteem and people seeing me as a push-over. I can say those people around me who didnt care about "spirituality" are way further in their self-development and life than I am - and happier - and it`s not like they had to be shitty to get there.
I now find "spirituality", the way it is taught by Eckhart Tolle and others to be quite dangerous, to be honest.
I dont see the point in losing our individuality.

Of all your videos and lessons this one, to me, is the biggest lesson, the final solution, the ultimate way. I realized that all I've watched and learned so far was a way to avoid my real life direct experience. No wonder it's a constant back and forth. No wonder "it doesn't work". I realize that now but I suspect I'll have to come back to it and away a few more times until I realize it fully. It's just how conditioning works. Thank you again. 🙏🏼

I don’t know what this girl has but she is amazingly on point. I’ve looked at so many other spiritual teachers and they pretend like covering our eyes and thinking positively is the way to go about life, and preach to not experience this human life. Since I was a kid I always asked myself, why then if we going to transcend to a 5D or whatever D. And that’s the goal of life we came to this physical reality?. I’ve asked so many spiritual friends and they always turned their backs on me and tell me I am not being spiritual enough and that I have to kill the ego and this physical experience. Teal you are by far my favorite.

It's so weird that I found this video. I recently said that I have been using spirituality as a drug/pain killer, once it stops working, I needed another dose of it, one video after another, one book after another. I used it to escape my present moment by trying to learn about how to be present (so bizarre), escape my fear, pain or uncertainty. I was trying to create feel good, all is well, positive and happy me sorta reality that often faded as it was only on surface. I didn't know it's called spiritual bypassing.

Pulling yourself out of a comfort zone is one of the hardest things to do. Especially when you find yourself in a rigid, structured religious community. I always feel like there are two polar forces pulling at me in such an organization, so I keep my contact to a minimum. However, going to meditation classes, or church has told me quite a bit about what I like, and don't like about life.
True freedom means even letting go of being "right," or "happy." Being aware is the only thing that matters to me. Good Video! Thanks Teal!

And I am also becoming more and more aware. I realised that I have also been trapped in ' Spiritual Bypassing ' and now I also recognised... Many people that are around me are trapped in this too. This video debunks it all... Appreciate what you are doing for humanity Teal... - I've been following your teachings since 2016 when I came across your video about ' Energy Vampires '. Authenticity has ALREADY been the highest aspiration of many spiritual practioners. Somewhere about late 60's or so... Authenticity can be just another bypass: "being authentic" often just means acting out and having no second thoughts about it. While you can hardly make any real spiritual progress without being honest to yourself, spirituality does involve something more, like AWARENESS and the choice you have as to what you do about the issues your authenticity allows you to acknowledge.

Yes, Yes, Yes. OMG. I am so sick of the spiritual la-la-la crap that one facet of spirituality is that we have to stay so positive and deny those moments when we are not being authentic to our true emotions (sometimes we are just angry, afraid, feeling sad, it just is what it is). IF it's not some addiction, it's replacing with spiritual overly-positive affirmations. ACCEPTANCE is key to anything. Resistance is futile, have you ever noticed the more you resist nothing happens other than you are more and more frustrated? All that positive sunshine lollipop is like just accept who you are and deal with that. But that's so hard for most because they think if they accept the fear or anger they are that and that feels like death. So that is why they resist. Most spiritual leaders had some type of trauma, addiction and now they use spiritual la-la to cover it up. It just gets displaced from one situation to another.

You get more of what you focus on. Angry can be due to a liver that needs detoxing. Depression/anxiety/no sleep/obsessing/panic/suicidal thoughts may be due to low oxygen in the brain due to Celiac. Celiac may hurt the thyroid/liver and all glands and gut lining so less nutrients absorb. Untreated Celiac may hurt the brain/body. When you fix the physical then a person may laugh. I laughed for a week taking Vit D3 5000IU. Vit B12 methylcobalamin shot/intrinsic factor kind helped with stress. A negative prayer to God to me is asking for negative thing...not good. Say what you want...not want you don't want in a request. A person can't just avoid fixing health and try to be happy and without addictions which helped them cope. A happy person can't just pretend in their mind they are happy. Tests may not work to diagnose Celiac so few people get real help so they try to deal with it in other ways.

ThankU Well! Pretty great. The summation says it: A tool is useless unless it is used. 1980
My foray(sic?) into the spiritual community was brief cuz i was attacked. Yep, I was in immense pain after a tragedy. I left believing that I must have a universe-sized ego, meanwhile feeling my ego was utterly crushed. Repelled, I wouldn't go back.
Teal's video on authenticity, also great!, made the point that in being honest, we don't have to be brutally honest. So glad she said that! Yesterday I listened to a different teacher talk about anger. He emphasized anger does not equal violence. Bombshell, as i grew up where anger regularly morphed to violence. So, being calmly graciously angry feels inauthentic. Craaap!

Let's be aware of the seriousness in this ...Authenticity is resisted on a global level. The world economy...the way the system is set up...dictates that authentic people/organizations are shunned, beaten into submission or killed. This is an important video and I have to say that Teal seems to be hitting all the right buttons...but we do have to be careful what we wish for...I do not believe we are all ready to go deep and we shouldn't beat ourselves up for that either! I do love the fact that Teal is putting the crush on the myth of "just think positive"...great stuff

I dare anyone working in the "light" to act authentically and not experience the "resistance" of the collective unconscious right now.....in fact after watching these two videos of Teals I am more convinced than ever that acting authentically without being challenged by the shadow or collective unconscious is impossible in our current world because we are climbing out of the "darkness" of the collective unconscious and they (the collective unconscious) are not liking it (because of the global collectivism that exists on the planet)....Jung wrote about this a lot, and until we all individually realize that challenging the current collective unconscious is what we "should" be doing as lightworkers, we will continue to think that manifesting challenges in the external reality is "wrong". I actually think that we should reframe our judgments and dive into these so-called negative manifestations as Teal suggests in her F*ck The Law of Attraction video for the nuggets of personal truth aka authenticity.

I read some of the comments....for me....this is simple. If you reject something you feel....the act of rejecting it makes it pop up again. If you are just looking at something, and you are not rejecting it, just looking.....then it is free to move on....you will not attract it back into your Universe. If you are angry and do not want to accept that you are angry....you are rejecting a part of yourself....a house divided, cannot stand. Somehow we must become whole, and that doesn't happen by rejection.

Very cool video. I didn’t know people use the meditation to detach like you said. I started meditation to see if I could feel again. And yes it worked. I feel more in control of my emotions and centered. In some cases there are people that are more egocentric than those who aren’t spiritual. Quite ironic LOL. I learned the hard way that I had to feel even the negative emotions. All emotions communicate something that we should be taking care of. And sometimes the toxicity of ignoring emotions and acting as if you’re happy all the time ends up ruining your progress

    This is something I've been pondering;
Can it really be true that we can't go from a pure negative thought to a pure positive one? Isn't that the very essence of "relief" or releasing resistance; that moment where an emotion is an instant manifestational byproduct of a thought?
Abraham Hicks has described it as 'You can't go from 93.6 FM to 106.2' (para), or at least it's not comfortable, however, one can be "in the Vortex" and think a thought which kicks them out. Technically you're on a frequency of "feeling good", so you should not have access to thoughts that kick you out....but, you are a deliberate creator. Conversely I've had moments where I've caught my negative train of thought (based on how I was feeling), and asked myself a question or said a specific phrase, and went straight into the Vortex. It would seem frequency jumping happens the moment one truly "lets go".
Plus if the physical world is an extension of how things work in the spiritual realm--when comparing ourselves to radios, one can in fact skip digitally from station to station. On scientific level, quantum physics is ultimately where the spiritual and scientific meet to explain how LOA does what it does. Physicists purport atoms are constantly jumping in and out of one reality to the other to compensate for our changes in perspective. Much in the way thoughts seem to just "pop" into your head.
So, one has keep in mind when talking about any spiritual philosophy or teacher regarding LOA; they are trying to explain the theory or philosophy which has worked for them in hopes of helping others. I do believe there are Universal truths, however, you can not remove the observer from the experiment.
That said, I absolutely agree there is value and even necessity in not spiritual bypassing or whitewashing sometimes, but it's dependent upon the individual, circumstance, and where they are relative to their Vortex. I tend to agree with Abraham that if it's not active in your vibration, it's not "subconscious" and therefore an issue, but that's totally contingent on one's awareness of themselves.
One thing I have learned in my own practice of the LOA is YOU create your own rules as to how your Universe works. Thus if you believe you need to sort your issues out, or do a certain thing in order to get where you want to be, that will be your experience.

I'm working lately on my unresolved feeling of hopelessness, that is always there, in my whole life and among the other "problems" that are surfacing through my Shadow Work, is the attack form members -including my beloved teacher- form the Kryon spiritual school that I attend... Anyway I'm so grateful to you for your amazing teachings, you are the greatest Teacher I had in my whole life! :) So happy to have "met" you! Thank you!

I would focus upon unconditional love, without feeling it. However, even by focusing on it without feeling it, I began to experience what those words were leading to, referring to. It IS OKAY to be in that phase of development! It is also necessary to have a recognition of what is truly meant by the words. Go beyond the words, into an experience.

Holy moly is this a gift from my Higher Self. I had no idea the level I needed to hear this. The way I have been spiritually bypassing is returning to the "I AM" state in meditation and expecting that to heal my mind. Perhaps that would be effective in the long run, but it was keeping me from mentally facing my distortions. (And I was wondering why my life wasn't improving.)

Lots of people believe they are "happy" as they live in spiritual denial and hypocracy. Spirituality should not be used in the place of seeing a therapist. Your issues, upbringing, parental influence will all continue to play a role in your present life until you look at your childhood programming. Spirituality is used as a band aid for an open wound and it doesn't work. It took me me years to see this truth and realise until I faced the truth of who I was, I couldn't move forward. I had to go back in order to move forward. Don't be fooled by spirituality. Teal, thank you. Very clear video and message.

And one more thing: some yet-unmet needs can never be met in this life; some (say, just some, perhaps fewer than we tend to believe) unresolved issues may never be resolved in the world we live BUT they can be transcended. That's what spirituality offers, also to the underprivileged ones, rich or poor, able or handicapped...

I used astrology in past 10 years to get trough hard times. I was avoiding to face so many painful things in my life. I was afraid of working on my dreams and I did nothing because "I can see in my chart I will be successful and it will happen somehow". It really sounds silly but it wasn't on conscious level. I remember being waitress and hated that job but staying because "Saturn is transitioning my second house and it's a time in my life where I will be poor no matter what I do".
Recent astrology popularity just made me realise how many people, like myself, are using it instead having a good psychotherapy. But I am still young and it's not too late.

I asked a question (don't recall now) and this lovely lady showed up. This is my 3rd time listening to her. She imparts so much information that it may take me a few times per video to hear it all. I see that as a good thing, but most importantly I now feel at somewhat peace. My husband died unexpectedly 2015 and I was completely shattered, lost, in survival mode for the past few years. There was only 1 person who stood by me as I crashed and dived on many levels before getting to this stage of a somewhat stable semblance of a human being. I have a long way to go yet but this definitely has helped as I hear the truth that integration is the way to healing. Sincerely hope this makes sense as it is a deep and wide venture (for lack of better verbiage)

The good thing about this video is that it can help many people who are experiencing spiritual bypassing. It also helped me realize something about my family. I can't force them to undergo a spiritual transformation. they have to find it themselves in their own way. I may have found it. but they cant jump the gap from negative to positive instantaneously.
