I was quite disappointed when I asked my film buddies to watch the trailer of the movie to decide if they wanted to watch it with me. They decided it wasn’t for them and didn’t watch it. I, of course, was raring to watch it and I loved the film. It was a quiet but lovely film. Very realistic and very relatable - as someone who has moved to several different cities and countries. And although I sort of wanted it to end somewhat differently, the way it ended was the most realistic ending. Sigh. It was heartbreakingly true to life. I agree with your review. I hope it gets a film nomination.

It’s always special when something flying under the radar like that can hit so hard! You don’t even realize how invested you are during the first two acts. When that emotional payoff hits, it’s wild! I’m glad you both loved it, and thank you !

I have seen this movie more than ten times, on Showtime, and plan to see it again in the future. The bond
between the Past Lives and Now Lives, is incredible. The three main characters are all wonderful. As an
African American woman, empathy was easy. Some of discussions between the characters, I have never,
ever, seen in a movie. Yes, there will be tears. I just subscribed. I wish I had found you earlier.

Very nice review and I’ve read many. I agree with what you said about how moving this film is. A famous critic once said he doesn’t cry at sad movies, he does when it’s about goodness. Somehow reminded me of ‘Lost in Translation’ - both movies share a similar mood despite completely different stories.

I agree. The movie was so relatable, as someone who was born in Canada then had to move to the States. It felt like it was depicting my life. I also related to Hae Sung so much. I had a friend like Hae Sung. I met him 20 years ago. We were in the same class. The last time I saw him was when he was 12. He passed away from a car accident. When Nora says that she remembers Hae Sung as this kid, I could relate. It hits you outta nowhere. The ending made me think about the what if’s, like what if I coulda grown up with him.

I wonder if there will be an alternate ending where Nora gets in the taxi at the end 😂.
Edit: Overall, I liked how interesting the film is, but I didn’t like the goodbyes throughout the film, which gives the film its name Past Lives. If you think about it, at the end of the film, mostly all the characters are kinda miserable minus the guy from Seoul because he found a sense of closing the door to be peaceful. But at the same time, he’s not with his first love. The 3 characters felt they were missing out on something.
I liked the acting, camera work, character development, and the last scene which is super super refreshing in this age of films. And since I’m studying Korean language myself, I didn’t like how the husband knew little Korean. That’s just me. Also didn’t like in the opening scene of the people just guessing how the 3 characters know each other because their assumptions were kinda racist.

@@drewsaidthat yea French is awesome too. But yea man, the people at the beginning was like “c’mon now” and they called them tourists and the husband a tour guide, which I thought was very distasteful since I’m a minority born in America as well. And speaking of tourists, I thought the scene of when they went to the statue of liberty on the ferry was odd because it looked like (the background people were) locals going to see the statue instead of actual tourists from outside the state/country. What did you think of that ferry scene ?

    • @drewsaidthat

It was a very emotionally mature movie. The trailer led me to believe there would be some rift between the married couple, and initially there's a tiny bit, but it's refreshing that in fact there isn't and instead there's a level of maturity in how they navigate the situation. Many of us, myself included, can relate to that experience of meeting the love of your live and realizing it can't continue for whatever reason and how devastating that can be.
