Phil Simpson. I am now 68 and played the Shadows music in a rock band in England. I have watched others but yours is the original. I now after 30 years have bought a fender again and I used to play all your teaching. now I need a refresher course .Smile and yours is the best. Thanks
Paul i'm 58 today i started to learn the guitar with help from a friend April 2014 just once every 6 weeks i go to his house, i've been following online course's etc, youtube tutorials etc, this record is one that most probably started me loving the guitar all those years ago, but i have never been able to learn a song so quickly since i started, your methods are great, to say i only started this 4 days ago and am at 80 percent of the video, cheers mate
I have wanted to learn this for y e a r s, and the way you have taught it is the best I've come across so a big thank you. Another BIG thing, is you don't whittle on like most (unfortunately) Americans do, which makes learning fun, concise and a pure pleasure so thank you.
That's the best tutorial i have seen for Apache on the internet yet. Ultra video and clear instructions along with the picking hand showing how it's done. Well done. 10/10
Thankyou for making this easy to follow, I'm about 75% of the way through. A 52 year old newbie. Until I master it (cough, cough) I won't be attempting anything else. Again thank you, for many pleasurable, and stressfullish hours ;)
I found myself accidentally picking out th e opening couple of phrases of Apache, and thanks to your excellent video, have confirmed I was correct and even in th e correct key! So, I'm learning the whole piece ow. MANY thanks!
Dear, sir, I wish to send you a big THANK, for this very good instrumental guitar part of the famous "Apache" melody! Great lesson! Wishing you all the best, and safe and healthy during these perilous times of global pandemic! Best Regards from Sweden! Keep up your good work, sir!
Hi Paul ,,would just like to thank you and on behalf of all newbies that are trying to learn out there bud,,,appreciate yr dedication and time putting this vid up,,,really enjoyed it and hope that many more will come ,,take care and wishing u all the very best cheers Mac
Thank you for an excellent tutorial- by following it with you in slow mo I was able to pinpoint where I was playing it in correctly. In the process I introduced my self to the palm mute and the pull! Shame you did not bring it all together as it was played at the end but that is a minor carp.
I played this back in the 60’s but I had never heard of the shadows, the Ventures had the big hit with it in the states. Have heard the Shadows and it it is a great rendition. Enjoyed your video
An excellent tutorial, I will continue to practice. Your clear conscience teaching style suits me very well. I have subscribed and will look at any previous videos you have made. Thank you for sharing your skills and Knowledge, stay safe, regards, Chris.
Finally finished learning the apache i think your tutoring is the best on here so clear and precise. Was wondering iff you could do a lesson on the albertros by the shadows thanks again keep up the good work
the best, and clear beginner's guide on learning to play apache by the shadows really gives you something to get started with, as some one that as always love how the shadows play, and having always wanted to learn to play the guitar these are brilliant video's, so from a nobody who is just learning to play you will probably never really know how much you have helped me music is the way to the soul. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to make and put these videos on. Tommy
Well done, your teaching is very good eventhough i don't even know how to ply guitar. You really make me feel like trying. Love the lesson. Will keep following your lesson.
The most simplest guitar tutorial I've ever seen.. superb.. well I've one request. Can you make the tutorial for "Eye of the tiger" from the movie Rocky..
Hi Paul, Many people are confused and rightly they are too as I really don’t know what went wrong and why the Shadows didn’t take it to the US. The original version was as you say composed by the great Jerry Lordan then the Shadows recorded it in June 1960 and released it in July where it topped the charts here for five weeks. Then in autumn 1960 Jørgen Ingmann, recorded his version and released it in November in the US where it was a hit there and also in Canada. Another great british export :-) I do think the Shadows missed out there though. Really impressed with your tutorial. You make it look so easy I want to buy another guitar and learn, probably a bit late at 50 and i wasn’t that successful the first time I tried. My guitar teacher was teaching spanish guitar and i struggled. He did expect us to be able to play perfect the second after he had explained it once. If he had taught in the same manner as you Im sure Id have been in Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet. :-) Thanks for putting this together, I have subscribed and will return,,,, dreaming that i can play guitar. Thanks Paul
Don't know, maybe the Shadows were just a bit earlier than the British invasion bands of the mid 60's. As for trying to play just give it a go. I have many students who only started playing the guitar when they retired and their getting on fine. You're never too old to try something new.
Andrew Beaven : Just to add a bit info for you The Shadows were doing a spring tour in 1960 with Cliff when they met Jerry Lordon who introduced his tune Apache to them, he advised that Bert Weedon had recorded a version of it but hadn't released it as a single, so the Shads decided to record it and EMI released it in July 1960, the rest is history. The Shads chance of having a hit with it in America was scuppered by Danish guitar Jorgen Ingmann, who had recorded his new single Echo Boogie and was looking for a 'b' side and came across Apache on a demo record, not knowing where it came from, recorded it, as it turned out so well for him, it became the A side and that with a successful promotion by his US record company gave him a very large hit in the US. Shame really, but Shadows music survives strongly today, where as Jorgen Ingmann has disappeared off the face of the earth!
A really very patient and very well demonstrated lesson ! You made it look easy Paul ! I had a very pleasant experience learning this piece. I hope you have many such other guitar lessons. Would love to learn some lead guitaring from you. Thanks a lot mate !
Hi Paul, I'm just learning to play a guitar at the age of 79. found it very hard learnung the chords but would love to play apache like you do here. A great lesson thats really incourages me to comtinue. What echo chamber are you using? Sound great my guitar is a Fender Strat which I love
what a brilliant tutorial video, thank you very much, just one question regarding the delay effect, I have a boss delay pedal and never really used it much is there a specific setting you would recommend or just follow my ears as it were?? Thanks again for the video.G.
+Graeme Price It depends which type of pedal you have. When I recorded this video I think I used a Boss DM-2 in standard mode with the repeat at about 40%, the echo about 30% and the intensity about 60%. For a digital delay such as the Boss DD-3 you could set the f-back and D-time to around around 40% and the speed to 800ms as a start and then play around till you find something close.
Hi Paul thank you for the great lesson. Really enjoyed it! Could you pulse do a lesson on Shindig by the Shadows? Would really appreciate it. Thanks again.
having picked up my guitar after years and listening to apache there still seems something missing in the "gallop" that I could never quite reproduce like a rolling FFF CCC,HMM hmm. There almost seems to be spring box associated with the "gallop" in a group of 6 like DUH DUH DUH, duh duh duh. ETC... I don't know. I could never nail with the pedals and effects that i had at the time.
If ever you do Riders in the sky by the shadows that would be great as still some parts not sure of and aI am sure your att to detail it would help me sort them out.Paul.
+Paul Coyne Paul, Ken Mercer has a great youtube video on how to play "Riders In The Sky" in case you haven't come across it. Just go to kenmercermusic. Cheers! Dilip
