James you convinced us to buy this bike - picked them up on Friday morning. My wife got the Rage Red (she loves the color)and I got the Matt Trek Black (makes it look retro). Rode them Sunday morning 20+ miles. Put them through the test - we were on paved roads, gravel roads, bike paths with wooden bridges, and a few hills. They came through with flying colors. Thanks for your DS3 bike review. P.S. we also own FX 7.4 bikes. The FX and the DS even though they’re both hybrids are different bikes for different purposes.
Hard to find a hitch mounted bike rack that has cradles that are wide enough - because the bike tubes are wide and not rounded. Other than that they are a little heavy but are lighter than any other bike in this class that has front suspension and disc brakes. One piece of advice, take them out for a test drive. My wife and I test rode them at two different bike shops to make sure we liked the bikes.
I love my DS 3. It’s a great all around commuter bike, I can lock out the front suspension and crush hills, or open it up to save my wrist on old rails bed paths. The 1x has enough range for any type of riding I do with it, including climbing.
Outstanding review, thanks, concise, yet informative and easy to watch. I love my DS3, meets my needs in a single bike. I can have fun with the family, ride a few KM's to work, or go for a fitness ride. Note the one I got has Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, perhaps an Australian market variation.
James, I think you are right on; this is likely a bike that will fit a huge proportion of the bike riding public. Light trails and hills, paved roads and paths, this Trek is a bike that will do it all. Most people won’t be getting in trails, and the frame of this bike is more setup for recreational riding, which is what most people do. I am in the process of dumbing down my very trail competent Nukeproof Scout to be a bike very similar to this Trek. My Scout has a 150mm fork and weighs less than this Trek, but I suspect the Trek is much comfortable on a 20 mile road or path ride. Thanks as always for a great video!
Bought this bike today. Thank you for the video. I was also on the fence about cheap shocks on a cheap bike… but I do ride everywhere, and didn’t want to be slowed-down by a full mountain bike.
Cheap? This abaout 1k. Up almost $150 to 200 from 2020/21 models across all of the bikes, due to demand, inflation, gas prices and stock issues. I wouldn't call this cheap, at least not to me.. Then again this is to me a cheap bike would be $300 or less walmart/huffy /schwinn /Amazon bike. Now if comparing to se of the high end trek road bikes, then sure I guess, still wouldn't call it cheap.
I've got an FX, I find it way too stiff on even light trails, shock absorption is non-existant. The front suspension of DS3 is very welcome if you ride trails that are even moderately bumpy.
Thank you so much for making this video , I've test ridden it recently and will be buying it next month. I have loved this bike and can't wait to make it mine. Thanks so much!
My wife and I were shopping for a new bike for her and I had narrowed it down to either a Trek DS 3 Gen 4 or the Giant Cypress 3. I thought we would go with the Giant but that goofy suspension seat post was so hokey we tossed the Giant after sitting on it. The sitting position/ergo’s, weight, style and colour options on the Trek had us sold immediately. The Trek is so damn comfortable I am considering getting one as well. It’s a great city bike that can be taken camping when we go. The rolling resistance is night and day compared to my old Giant ATX 840…. and I love the one sprocket up front vs the triple!
@Burak Ünsal the 2023 Gen 5 version is redesigned with a new frame, with (as noted above) 27.5” wheels and no suspension fork. It’s basically a new bike, although components like drivetrain and brakes are same/similar as before. Weight is down mainly due to the new rigid carbon fork.
Ordered it in the "equipped" version, looking forward to receive it, hopefully in a couple of weeks! I live in the EU so there are plenty of great bike brands (German, Dutch...etc), but what definitely sold me was the very good price for what you get and the 1*10 Deore transmission...

That’s asking for a lot considering Trek’s ongoing push to cut costs. If it had a hydraulic fork, it might be better. I’m about to buy a Checkpoint for off-road stuff. I’ll continue to enjoy my DS around town. I have 3x and wish I had this 1x setup. multi purpose hybrid is way to go if someone is looking for "one" bike. I literally just went and test rode a Giant roam 2 in the black and am considering the trek dual sport 3. Is there any noticeable difference between the two? I can’t make up my mind as they are near the same price. Gearing and everything close to the same?
Hi, great video, thank you I have a ds 8.4 from 2015 which I love it but I'm thinking to replace with a new ds, what do you think? Is it worth it or just upgrade the parts? Thank you
I have the same bike and same color I do like it but if they had the fx3 in at the time I bought the ds3 I would have taken the fx3.The ds3 is on the heavy side and where I ride I can really do without the suspension fork.
James, is that stem height different vs. a Marlin 6? The handle-bar looks identical to a Marlin? However the handlebar appears to be higher? Can I put that stem on my Marlin 6?
You say the Gold Alpha Aluminum is a "shaped and butted" aluminum frame. I haven't been able to find this information anywhere else. Trek is very vague about what differentiates their various levels of aluminum. They do go into detail on their website about the hydroforming of the tubes to give the various shapes, but I can find nothing about other chacteristics of the material. What else can you tell us about Trek's aluminum technology, and can you point to any resources where we can learn more?
I still have doubts if I buy this bike or a Marlin 7. If anyone would like to comment, be my guest. The question is: it will be more for urban than offroad usage. I konw you will advise me to get the dual sport one, but I also want a strong and brave bike, even for short trails. The dual sport one looks like not as strong as the Marlin 7 one. (compare the welding level close to the handlebar on both bikes).
I am biased. The most expensive bike I've ever had is the trek Marlin 6. Three years old this year. I love it. And I'm cheap. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I’m in between the DS2 and the FX2. I’m gonna be riding on pavement about 75% of the time, but the other 25%, I’m planning to go on forest trails/gravel. The FX2 seems speedy, and I personally love speed. Is the DS2 significantly slower than the FX2 with the fork locked out?
I went 2021 DS3 - full mountain bike is overkill for my gravel rides, and the FX tyres not enough …. That’s got to be the main consideration - the tyres you need to run
I promise you the specific bike in this video does not have a blendr stem. You care correct this bike is spec'd with Blendr and most will come with it. Stem, Saddle, and Seatpost were all component subs on this specific bike.
I have the 2022 DS3 and was curious whether the chair/gear makes a different sound when its on the top (lightest gear)? Mine kinda makes a soft/smooth rattling sound... It got it's first tune-up today and it's the same... Is that a normal thing or something needs to be fixed?
That's pretty normal for 1x drivetrains. If you look behind/top-down on at your chain - you will see how much it bends on the largest/smallest cogs, so that's rattling sound is the noise that chain plates make when the chain is moving bent. Tune-up can reduce the rattling (and you should ask for another tune-up if you think that it is too noisy), but it won't be able to permanently and completely eliminate it, it will eventually come back with a dirt on the chain. Another common issue on 1x drivetrains - if you backpedal fast on a highest cog - the chain may drop (to lower cogs). I had DS3 2021, and it had 2x9, and it was pretty noisy too (because Shimano Alivio tolerances are huge), I would say as noisy as my current 1x on the largest cog.
@@serzhick23 I spoke with my bike dealer/mechanic and he told me that the rattle sound is natural on the 10-12speed Deore. He's got the same thing going on his 12 speed. Nothing to worry about. All good.
@@serzhick23 coming to this bit "if you backpedal fast on a highest cog - the chain may drop (to lower cogs)" that's normal. It happens to Deore 10+ speed drive trains. Perfectly normal. Nothing to worry about.
Not only saddle, but also the seatpost, the stem, the handle bar, the brakes are all different brand than the specs on website? what is going on? This really confused me. I notice the same to your bike, especially you mentioned the brake is ProMax, but it should be Shimano according to the specs on website, any ideas? thanks a lot!
yes, I took some foam window insulation and cut a split in one side then wrapped it on the cable and slid it down into the frame from the bottom. Worked great.
Definitely included category and spoke in depth to that. Also I nearly never add pricing because it doesn't stay up to date with changes nor does it involve where you the watcher is. Use good, or the linked bike shop I borrowed the bike from
Google is most definitely not my friend. You know they develop drones that kill more civilians than putin ever has right? I'm not going to Google every single bike you upload that's for sure. Price of the bike is the number 1 factor when buying or comparing what I could've bought instead of my current bike. Your reviews are are aimed at first time buyers, basically reading a sales brochure. You never address real questions, where it was built, other options, major flaws (like the weak gaping hole in the Marlin frame under the bottom bracket, rattling internal cables forcing you to undo and bleed the brakes to install a 30 cent foam antirattle shield, the seat post that fills with water and can't drain, no dropper holes, awful chain line, the fact these expensive bikes don't even feature $10 integrated headsets and can only be made semi integrated. They have exposed bearing headsets. The bontrager stem had water ports feeding rain into the headset and steel steerertube which will rust out even faster than old giants etc)
I am undecided between DS2 and DS3. To bad DS3 has gear ratio 40T - 11/46, it would be perfect with the same gear ratio as DS2 (30/46 - 11/36), also because it has Deore. DS3 has Alivio/Altus.
I have something against hybrid bakes with front suspension. The reason is they weigh too much because of the fork that is pretty much useless at anything. Instead of a Jack of all trades, it's a Jack of no trades. It doesn't do any well and puts most people off riding long distances. If you need a front suspension a mountain bike would be far more versatile. You can buy a Trek Marlin 7 or a myriad of other brands. It would cost a little less than this Dual Sport and weigh the same. By buying a second set of tyres (with the money saved over the Dual Sport) you could ride this bike almost everywhere. An FX3 with balloon tyres run at the correct pressure would also be far better. I find hybrid bikes with forks to be the bike a shop owner sells to someone they consider non cycling people. It actually shows a certain disrespect because it basically says. "I know you don't really want to cycle. You just want a bicycle shaped object. So here is one that you'll be almost guaranteed to not ride a lot".
Yep - I would have much preferred it without front suspension, but bought the DS3 2021 for its orange paint and larger tyres - but it’s only an occasional bike for me
A balloon tire doesn't cut it on the beat up roads and trails that I ride, and a lot of people are biking for exercise not time trials so saving a few pounds or getting better efficiency is completely irrelevant. The Marlin 7 ( which is $50 and 1 lb more than a ds 3) is geared to top out at 22 mph, and you can't put a crank bigger than 34 on it, whereas the ds 3 has a 40t. Then you have to buy new tires for the Marlin 7 and it's even more expensive. In the 3x drivetrain days a mountain bike with skinny tires was perfect for a lot of people. Now you have to decide whether you want to climb 10% grades comfortably or you want to go fast. Here's a conspiracy theory: part of the push towards 1x drivetrains is to make bikes less versatile so you have to buy separate bikes for specific conditions. If you don't want front suspension why can't you just buy an FX 3 and let people who want a true hybrid have their fun?
I would disagree. Hybrids are ideal for people who want one bike to do it all. Almost. Faster on the road than MTBs, but can go off the road. Offcourse, they can't cut it where MTBs have their forte, but they can hold their own. I modified my old Fuji hybrid with gravel tyres, and I don't fall behind my MTB riding group on hilly terrain. And as a long distance tourer, it's superb.
Do the math. There’s typically a lot of overlapping ratios on 3x system. This one will cover nearly the same overall range, maybe just lose a bit on the top end.
Dual Sport 3 isn't even much heavier...hit 33 mph on my Dual Sport 3 yesterday, hit a jump and the suspension absorbed it in stride. Try that on an FX 3 with the little 32C peewee tires.
@@markroberts6926 I would any day prefer the dual sport 3 over the FX. I rode dual sport on bumpy pavements and trust me suspensions really gives you better control and speed, plus you can lock it as well so I don't think it's a big deal as far as these guys have mentioned weight, I don't think it matters for me because I have grown up riding steel frames.

I literally just went and test rode a Giant roam 2 in the black and am considering the trek dual sport 3. Is there any noticeable difference between the two? I can’t make up my mind as they are near the same price. Gearing and everything close to the same?
Hi, great video, thank you
I have a ds 8.4 from 2015 which I love it but I'm thinking to replace with a new ds, what do you think? Is it worth it or just upgrade the parts? Thank you
I just ordered this exact bike...DS3 in red.
I have the same bike and same color I do like it but if they had the fx3 in at the time I bought the ds3 I would have taken the fx3.The ds3 is on the heavy side and where I ride I can really do without the suspension fork.
You’ll like the next-generation (2023) DS.
Do you have a review on the Dual Sport 4? And how both the Dual Sport 3 and 4 compare?
James, is that stem height different vs. a Marlin 6? The handle-bar looks identical to a Marlin? However the handlebar appears to be higher?
Can I put that stem on my Marlin 6?
Simply gorgeous
You say the Gold Alpha Aluminum is a "shaped and butted" aluminum frame. I haven't been able to find this information anywhere else. Trek is very vague about what differentiates their various levels of aluminum. They do go into detail on their website about the hydroforming of the tubes to give the various shapes, but I can find nothing about other chacteristics of the material. What else can you tell us about Trek's aluminum technology, and can you point to any resources where we can learn more?
I just bought a small Dual Sport 3 Gen 4 and was wondering what bike lock mount will fit in the limited space and with a water bottle?
the rear wheel doesn't look centered
I still have doubts if I buy this bike or a Marlin 7. If anyone would like to comment, be my guest. The question is: it will be more for urban than offroad usage. I konw you will advise me to get the dual sport one, but I also want a strong and brave bike, even for short trails. The dual sport one looks like not as strong as the Marlin 7 one. (compare the welding level close to the handlebar on both bikes).
Get this one.
I’ve got one in factory orange :)
very interesting great bike great name
Can we use the dropper post on this bike? Thanks
Will You do a 2023 Trek Dual Sport 3 Gen 5 review???
Very nice. I can get on board with that. Even like the color
Lol, coming from at discerning commenter must mean it's good
I am biased. The most expensive bike I've ever had is the trek Marlin 6. Three years old this year. I love it. And I'm cheap. Thanks for sharing this with us.
It would be if they added a front derailleur.
Their lower models have one. The Deore 1x10 obviously doesn’t need one.
@@JIMMYHIBBS1 thanks for the insight!
Is a press fit spindle better than threaded?
That IS a blendr compatible stem. It just isn't obvious. Trek's site has details.
I promise you the specific bike in this video does not have a blendr stem. You care correct this bike is spec'd with Blendr and most will come with it. Stem, Saddle, and Seatpost were all component subs on this specific bike.
@@Jamesthebikeguy It looks like the brakes were substituted, as well. They should be Shimano MT200.
How much this bike ?
And Where can I purchase this moeel
(Trek dual soprt 3 2021) ?
Is it possible to change the Gear system to 1x8 or 1x11 ?
Review Trek 2022 Fx sport 5 & 6 when you can
hello. I have the option of buying a trek dual sport 3. 3 years old, in excellent condition for €400. it's worth buying.
Nice bike dude
Please mention frame size of M and L in inches
Whats a better purchase 2022 model for 900€ or 2021 for 800€?
Nice bike… considered it… but extremely happy with my FX 🙌🏻🙌🏻
FX is a great bike, and I would have preferred not to have suspension, but DS3 has the 40mm tyres I really wanted … (and orange paint 🤦♂️)
Who is better hold and fast
al 3 or ths bike💐
AL 3 is much faster
But it good with of road or street?
Not as good off-road. Kinda like the Domane is a Sports Sedan and the Dual Sport is a SUV.
I saw the domane sl 4
How is the best or better the dl s 3 ? Or dmn sl 4 for speed Also can handle the street or of roed
Cervelo Caladonia review ok?
No one with Cervelo bikes near me. Unless they send me one I won't have those up for review
@@Jamesthebikeguy oh ok… you do great reviews.
I bought my dual sport 3 today, but found the saddle is different from spec, do you know why ? Thanks
Supply chain shortages. Lots of little things vary on bikes right now. Totally normal for the time we live in at the moment.
Nice 👍😉
Yeah my '21 DS3 came with continental tires instead of Bontrager tires.
Heavy bike.
You got lucky then - I have a 21 DS3 with the admittedly good looking Bontragers - pictured first time out on a thorn - literally made of paper
Rattle in the bottom frame from cables can get very annoying. Anyone tried to fix this.
yes, I took some foam window insulation and cut a split in one side then wrapped it on the cable and slid it down into the frame from the bottom. Worked great.
Need to include price and price category.
Definitely included category and spoke in depth to that. Also I nearly never add pricing because it doesn't stay up to date with changes nor does it involve where you the watcher is. Use good, or the linked bike shop I borrowed the bike from
Price is key. The older the video gets the more relevant the original price becomes
Then Google is your friend my friend
Nice bike
No shock and bigger tires works for me
How much?
is this penny flake colour?
Wait is this color new?
I am undecided between DS2 and DS3. To bad DS3 has gear ratio 40T - 11/46, it would be perfect with the same gear ratio as DS2 (30/46 - 11/36), also because it has Deore. DS3 has Alivio/Altus.
Many people would consider the 1X drivetrain an upgrade, apart from being Deore.
Give me a FX3. Lighter with same functionality
Not exactly the same - I agree I would have preferred no suspension, but tyres too weedy on the Fx for real Uk gravel/mud
How can a 1x10 have the same range as a 3x7 drive Train. 11 more gears.
Do the math. There’s typically a lot of overlapping ratios on 3x system. This one will cover nearly the same overall range, maybe just lose a bit on the top end.
The FX 3 would be just as capable and weigh less. The suspension fork adds nothing but additional weight and complication
Well, I agree, many people will enjoy the suspension fork in the more upright position of the dual sport
Just bought a 2022 fx3 yesterday and I thought the same thing when I couldn’t choose between either
Dual Sport 3 isn't even much heavier...hit 33 mph on my Dual Sport 3 yesterday, hit a jump and the suspension absorbed it in stride.
Try that on an FX 3 with the little 32C peewee tires.
@@markroberts6926ehh, that’s mild
@@markroberts6926 I would any day prefer the dual sport 3 over the FX. I rode dual sport on bumpy pavements and trust me suspensions really gives you better control and speed, plus you can lock it as well so I don't think it's a big deal as far as these guys have mentioned weight, I don't think it matters for me because I have grown up riding steel frames.
Too heavy. Suspension fork is not needed unless you plan to send it down a single track and I don’t think that one would last long..
It’s needed unless you don’t mind headaches going over every bump.
I'm 5'9" would this bike be good.
Yes in medium
The Giant Revolt 2 is the most versatile bike ever! Period....dude.😳
Lol... Are you the definitive voice for what bike is the most versatile
@@Jamesthebikeguy of course I am 🤣🤣
DS4 was cancled in 2021.
Dual sport 4 was dropped for 2022
how many teeth on a plate friend
plate of how many teeth??
You can't call a freaking hybrid a "versatile bike", An XC full squish is the most versatile bike
Its just a marlin with road tyres. Lazy Money grab
A Marlin in Drag
Way too heavy!!!!
In-between a gravel and a hardtail mtb , strange, I wouldn't buy it , glad I build my bikes
Dool sport? You mean dual
