    Thank you so much for posting this!
    There are a lot of people out there in the position of being an experts who are just not aware of all that's been discovered with meteorites in recent years.
    It is heartening to see that features I've been noticing, may indeed be things that make a rock more worthy of examination. Yes, I could still be misinterpreting what I'm seeing, but the features are there -- with actual accepted words, that I didn't make up -- to describe them.
    Moreover, realizing that if there are enough different features, then I should be able to get an answer for, "what makes this not rollover lipping; these tiny rivulets in the surface, not flow lines?"
    If someone just says, "That can't be it because that is very rare, you would never find one" and they refuse to look further, then they may have PhDs, but they are not real scientists. Time to just thank them (politely) for their time, and walk away. They're suffering an incapacity for comprehending variety and change. They're promoting self-fulfilling prophesy, and this is not productive for you -- or Science.
    Looking out in the garage and knowing now that my city has had 3 Meteor close encounters in the last 150 years, I do so wish I had taken better care of my rejects.
    ....A space with less temperature variation, more desicant packs, and investment in O2 absorbers, glass jars... Gloves... Anything you keep is worth keeping properly. If you toss it, you might just wonder later. But if you keep it, and haven't taken care of it? That's going to sting a while. Especially since now, it's not just that somebody ELSE was an idiot.

    Relatively new subscriber here. Great info in this video. I’m from the Pittsburgh, PA area. And I have something I’ve been sitting on for a few years now. I’m curious if you or anyone in the comments could possibly recommend somewhere (locally🤞) where I could get it checked out. The main reason why I think it could be a meteorite is where I found it. I originally took pictures of where, and the conditions I found it in. But they’re on a phone that ended up getting crushed, so I’d have to spend a few hrs trying to find the pictures on a backup. The photos would verify my story and provide more validity. But I found this quite large rock in someone’s yard that I’ve been doing work for, for years now. And I found it in the transition period from winter to spring. I was doing a walk around their 3+ acre property and came across a line of deep ruts in the grass with a large rock sitting in the last rut of the line. And it was somewhere that it would’ve been run over by a lawnmower had it been there prior to the winter season. And the way it was sitting, you could tell that it wasn’t from the freeze/thaw that occurs over winter. I sent pictures of the sample, and gave the backstory to a local rock/gem shop. But I could tell that they weren’t taking me seriously, and said that it would cost a couple hundred to have it sent out and tested at a lab. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciate 🙏

      Rocks appearing on a lawn are not a sign of a meteorite fall. There are many other explanations for how an odd rock wound up on a lawn. Rock chippers are capable of throwing rocks a fraction of a mile. (Pat)

    Hi great video with some real experts sharing information .what more could you hope to find . I don't want to get ahead of the video but right now I am at 19:14 on the video and you are discussing fusion crust and the subject of a meteorite titled, ordinary chondrite Chelyabinsk. I have watched several how to identify a meteorite videos and I think everyone I have ever seen says meteorites don't have holes and they don't contain quartz. If I were to have found this meteorite I would had looked at very carefully having noticed what appears to be a fusion crust . Untill I turned it over and noticed what appears to be quartz . What am I missing . If it appears to be quartz and I visually can see crystals if it is not quartz then what is it ?

    • @TopherspinMeteorites
      @TopherspinMeteorites  7 месяцев назад

      I'm not quite sure I understand your question. I checked the timestamp you provided and that is in fact the Chelyabinsk meteorite.
      Courts does not exist in meteorites. Courts needs water to form and there are no water sources on parent bodies that we have found that create courts in meteorites.

    I suspect Google has been pilfering through my search history as I work with extremely high temperature ceramics and associated chemistry, but I must admit this stimulates the same brain cells that pull me into my field! My children love collecting rocks and crystals, always hoping to stumble across a meteorite (hasn't happened yet), which of course interests me as well from both a metallurgic and geological viewpoint, as well as, you know it's a Space Rock!
    Excellent presentation, and it filled my head with questions; the primary one being that one would presume that most meteorites come into the atmosphere at varying rates of tumble. When they encounter the atmosphere, do they tend to stop tumbling on the largest surface face or rotate to the smallest cross section?

    • @TopherspinMeteorites
      @TopherspinMeteorites  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for your kind comments. Please spread the word about our channel. We (I) work really hard on it and need to get the word out there.
      Hard to answer your question as there are a bunch of variables. Some tumble during the entire entry. Some will achieve oriented flight for just some of the ablated flight, some show signs that orientation happened more than once. The rare ones remain oriented the entire time producing 'nose cones'.

    Hello I watched a meteorite come across the town and watched it fall in the town. My question is as it crossed town it was traveling northeast and soon as it crossed the town it fall down lighting up 3 times green before it hit it was over 1 .5 yr ago and I just started searching for it again today. What can you tell me about the issue of change of direction before it hit

      I would go to the events and using the calendar on the American mediological society web page. They have a list of all fireball events that would help you track it down.

    While metal detecting, I kept targeting something and it turned out to be a large rock (approx. 14" wide, 17" long and about 7" thick) oval shaped and looks as if the outside has been melted and dragged towards the "tail"... it has what look like "thumbprints", it is metallic, as it set my metal off... it is magnetic... the outside is severely oxidized (rusted), it has like a ridge around the whole thing and is about 60lbs. I cut a window on one side and polished it the best I could... the interior is a very dark green to almost black matrix with veins of orange / copper straw like fingers running through it. That's about the best I can do to describe it. I would very much like to take some photos and have your crew evaluate it. Looking forward to hearing from you.

      Save yourself the trouble of asking for anything from this guy. Unless it's already been "certified" & "classified" he doesn't care. It could be authentic and as big as a volkswagon, however unless someone in a lab says it is a meteorite... in their opinion (except maybe pat) we are delusional to think we have found a chunk of space without buying it!

Submit pictures to: facebook.com/groups/isitameteorite or facebook.com/groups/meteorite.or.meteorwrong. The power of the Facebook Groups I recommend is that there are a bunch of knowledgeable geologists and meteorite people in there.

    I found special rocks with thumb prints about the size of two soft balls side by side and for that small size they are very heavy. Some are black , some are a very light light green almost white. Some gray, yellow looking. I think they are meteorites. They were in the Spokane River; I fished them out, some were burned in the river bank and some up the hill from the river. Maybe a metiorite slammed into the river in the early 1900’s but many are like claws.

      Thanks for reaching out! If you're trying to determine whether a rock is a meteorite, I would recommend reaching out to some Facebook groups like “Meteorite or MeteorWRONG” or England Meteoritical Services (NEMS). These groups and services are dedicated to helping people identify potential meteorites. But, I must tell you that a river / water is the worst place for any meteorites to survive. They sound like Earth rocks to me. Good luck!

    A few nights ago watched a fireball fall out of the sky, it stayed on fire for about 100 ft from the ground before going dark. I could see a hill side in the background and the fireball still on fire in the forground. It landed less than a mile away. It look like it was going to hit us for a minute.I know they say this can't happen or dosnt happen but I watched it fall very clearly between me and a hill side. They also say meteorites don't have crystals or vehicles but look some do.I reported the fireball but i dont think anyone will take it sirously because it was still on fire so close to the ground.Ive found what I think are small particles and little pieces so far but the main mass looked alot bigger like a basketball.i know it's probably smaller than this. I know it's unlikely but I'm trying to find it. I been using a magnet stick to find what i have so far. thank you for the info. If there's any good advice I would be open to ideas. If i don't look I won't find anything. I'm determined to find somthing bigger than a grains of rice. Every day the pieces I find get bigger so I think I'm getting closer. Some are tiny round looking balls and others are bigger and have weird shapes. I was on a straight line trail and it fell almost straight on with the trail. Id be happy to find a marble size piece I'm happy to find what I have so I won't be disappointed.i live in oregon and not many meteorites have been found in my state, id love to add one to the list. Any info is welcome.

      I agree. The nomads and tribal hunters in Africa are getting much better at recovering non-magnetically responsive meteorites like achondrites. It takes a very trained eye.

It's still dirty I haven't cleaned it yet but it's black with some white on it. It's not super heavy but you can definitely feel the weight in it. And it attracts magnets my metal detector says Nickel and iron it keeps bouncing back n forth.. I'm pretty sure this is a meteorite from all the videos
