    This technique of feeling the loose spots has been applied to pretty much all of the combination locks and I wonder if it's simply just a limitation of this type of lock mechanism that can't be avoided.

    • @XtreeM_FaiL
      @XtreeM_FaiL 3 года назад +22

      juances Techique is very similar than what is used to pick disk detainer locks.
      Difference is that combination locks are cheap and have loose tolerances.

      reverse sidebar like in all other lock types can make this much harder

    • @yetanotherstronk
      @yetanotherstronk 3 года назад +22

      Yeah, my understanding is this gets a lot more awkward if you can't easily put tension on the locking mechanism (hence having to reach inside with a pick for some combination locks to pull/push the thing that interacts with the gates). I've tried decoding combination locks like this and I've found it extremely difficult to tell when something is a false gate. When your mechanism clicks into the false gate it usually gets bound on another gate, which often (to me) means I don't feel the stiffness LPL is talking about.

    • @melonlord1414
      @melonlord1414 3 года назад +22

      I wonder if it's possible to construct it in a way that prevents the weel being turned at all, when something puts tension on the mechanism. That woul solve the problem wouldn't it?

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 3 года назад +6

      Depends on what one means by "combination locks". There are mechanisms that will prevent this type of attack (at least without a tool to put tension on the sidebar) even on cheap "number wheel" type locks like this one - LPL has several videos on how some can still be easily picked. A Sargent & Greenleaf 8088 / 8077 is still a combination lock, but it's A LOT harder to pick...

    Hey LPL!
    Just wanted to share a quick story where you saved me the cost of a locksmith after hours call out. I locked myself out of my bedroom with one of those combo handle/lock combos in most apartments. I was just about to call a smith out before I stopped and thought about how you might open it, even if you’ve never seen the lock or key before. I ended up finding an Allen wrench that fit in the keyway, put torque on the handle, and jiggled the wrench and it popped right open! I was so excited to get it open I had to come and leave a comment because there’s no way I would’ve even thought to try to open it myself without your videos. If you ever get a Patreon I’ll definitely kick over the fee I would’ve paid ;)
    Thank you for the amazing content and keep up the great work!

    I can explain how the code change mechanism actually works on this lock. When the lock is open, the locking mechanism is blocked from turning. The actual code wheels are just rings around the actual locking mechanism, but with strong ball detents. What you are doing with the little tool in the holes, are just forcing the rings into new positions, by overcoming that ball detent. It is actually a pretty smart and good mechanism as it reduces the number of critical parts in the lock for code changing, since the actual locking mechanism doesn't need to be able to change code.
    In other locks, the code changing mechanism works by shifting the mechanism out of the code wheels, which is a weakness as now you must make sure the code changing mechanism cannot be activated while the lock is closed, usually by having a shackle detent into the code changing screw that prevents the screw from being turned while lock is closed or incorrect code is entered.
    In this Squire lock, the code changing mechanism is always active, so technically you could change the code while the lock is locked, if you somehow manage to seize the inner part of the locking mechanism and then turn the rings by force. This would just offset the code tough, so you would still need to know the current code to know what the new code becomes.

    Hearing the it click into place when you land in the correct gate made me want to try something with my extremely cheap little gun "safe," which exists just to have something by my bedside that isn't a gun laying in the open at night. You reviewed basically the same one in 1036.
    Putting pressure on the dial in the unlock direction didn't do a whole lot, but twisting it in the lock direction made a distinctly different click whenever the correct gate was located. Yet another way to get in to this incredibly cheap "safe," lol.
