Why I became a patent lawyer

- I did not always want to be a lawyer. Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked, and I loved math and physics. So I first became an engineer, and worked as an engineer for almost a decade. While working as an engineer, I pitched an #idea to the innovation council, which earned me a seat on the innovation council board. I loved hearing new ideas and disclosures from #inventors and decided to go law school to become a #patent lawyer.
Karima, back in college I started as a Civil Engineering major. However, I change to Economics. Maybe if I was oriented about the possibility of becoming a patent attorney, I would have finished my engineering degree. It's very cool that you work with aviation!
Oh Great.. 👌
I find myself in the same boat as you were. Is this career choice financially rewarding ?
very fulfilling if you love learning new things! Still a lot of work. If you want financial reward, I strongly recommend finance, banking and trading -
Karima Gulick Patent and Trademark Lawyer when u say finance and banking do u mean corporate lawyer?
Best wishes to you
Hi karima, I have a mechanical engineering degree and I’m feeling kind of stuck at my current job I took the lsat and did pretty well and I’ve always been interested in law school. I liked the idea of patent law because I would be able to use both degrees, I would be around super interesting and educated people and I would get to work with leading edge technology. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I graduated and I think that’s how I got in this situation. What advice can you give me and what are the less glamorous aspects of the job. Thanks!
Hi There - Most patent attorneys were in the same situation as you. Very few knew from the beginning they wanted to become patent attorneys. I think the best thing to do at this point would be to shadow a patent attorney or even try to get an internship in the field and see if it's something for you. Also, you can take the patent bar without going to law school. I hope this helps!
Hi. 🤔Is it possible to get a patent for a Theory, or do Anybody know? I really need this information. And thanks in advance!🙏🏾
Interesting.
Civol engineer here ❤ patent attorney soon
Hi karima I am already working in a top IP law firm in India as patent agent, however I am interested in becoming a patent lawyer in the USA. Is pursuing an MS a good option? will my Indian patent agent experience help in getting into top law firms in USA?
Hi Kar - I'm not familiar with the transition from another country. Assuming you're an attorney where you are, you will probably need an LLM here. An MS in the right field can't hurt!
Thanks very much for your response. I'm not a lawyer yet. I'm a electrical and electronics engineer. Ive drafted and prosecuted patents in software and Hi-Tech. LLM is my long term goal. I'm targeting for the role of "technical specialist" to get a foot on the door of IP law firms. Does this strategy work? or shall I right away pursue an LLM assuming my U.G. technical degree and experience is enough to convince law firms to hire me.
@@sim131990 Try the specialist route first, or sit for the patent bar to become a patent agent!
I wll be patent attorney , civil engineer by here ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
can someone help i have a question..If i see a product in a video or a photo online and that person has no patent ...is the product open to get a patent? or does it become exposed to the public and non patentable ???
The product belongs to public domain ,so not patenable unless you have made some advancements or improved the product in some way
Are you taking any new client? Do you have a business email?
