      Facts…ppl will say Russ only started cuz he said Russ would be starter coming into 2024 season but as training camp n preseason was going Tomlin said the job is being competed for, and in the end Russ was named Starter. Tomlin woulda loved to have Russ available vs Broncos but he wasn’t, he deserved to step back on field once able to play. Russ gave 2 Pass TDs(for 16/29 w/ 264yrds) n rushing TD while Justin coulda produced 16/29 n only gave 144 pass yrds…Russ showed levels

      Sometimes it’s sabotage, sometimes it’s incompetence and sometimes it’s just a bad fit. The opportunity the Steelers and Coach Tomlin have provided has exposed The Bears’ as an incompetent organization that almost ruined Fields’ career. The Bronco’s seemed to intentionally sabotage Wilson’s chances at success. To be fair though,I don’t think Pickett had the best opportunity in Pittsburgh. Tomlin’s best and worse trait is his loyalty to his guys and that loyalty with Canada made it impossible for a young guy like Pickett. With these two QBs, coach T has built a real contender.

      I legitimately think Payton was trying to tank for a pick. As an analyst he said he would lose on purpose for a chance at Williams. Also when he started to yell at Wilson it was after Wilson kept leading game winning drives. He pulled Wilson when there was a high probability of them making the playoffs as well. But the biggest thing to me was their redzone offense, Payton would constantly call runs and screens like he was trying to avoid letting Wilson and the offense score.

    The play at 3:15 is not an underthrow as so many people keep saying, but a comeback shot. He doesn’t have the space in the pocket to step up and launch it like he can, and the CB is playing the up on Pickens. The best place to throw that pass was behind them, knowing that his receiver would come back for the pass and the corner is out of position to then play the pass. It is more of a genius level play than is being talked about and if it was the QB on the other side this would be the correct analysis instead of discounting Russ’s abilities.

    • @BurlASSque
      @BurlASSque 2 дня назад +14

      Wilson has openly stated he does that on purpose because it makes the catch easier if it's into their body. It does sacrifice the run after catch opportunities, but it's easier for the receiver to catch the ball going into their body as opposed to stretched out.

    • @Concep3383
      @Concep3383 2 дня назад +7

      Agreed! If you watch Russ’s deep-passes many of those are thrown this way. He “drops it in the bucket” and puts it only where the receiver can get it. It will look like short-throws or over-throws, like with the pass to Muth, but it is purposeful. Only that receiver will catch it or it will be incomplete. That’s why he has a very low interception to completion ratio over most of his career.

Russ can still drop dimes and throw into tight windows (he was the best in the game at this until Mahomes came along, working largely with casts of undrafted and late-drafted receivers--DK Metcalf was the first second rounder he got to work with). A lot of what look like inaccurate passes are a more mature Russ realizing he can trust his receivers (some of them at least) to go up or out and get them , rather than making the perfect the enemy of the good and taking sacks as a result.

      @gcwishbone I think this is because Tomlin took Russ back to his roots--he started out as a guy who would regularly throw the ball away rather than take sacks. But as the Legion of Boom declined (as did the Hawks' run game), he felt he had to play more and more hero ball and carry the team by extending plays, which got harder and harder to do as he got older. After he signed that huge contract with Denver, he felt under even more pressure to do that, which is where he ran smack into Sean Payton.
      I think Tomlin told him, look, this team is like the one you started with: we pound the football, we run a play-action‐based passing game, and we play lights-out D. All you have to do is be you and avoid negative plays, which means treating sacks (and associated fumbles) the way you've always treated INTs.

    Statistically, Wilson is twice as good as Fields. I don't know why everyone ever got excited about 100 yard passing games with no touchdown passes and a fear of throwing the deep ball. I think that fear was justified, because clearly, Fields was just as likely to miss a wide open receiver by 15 feet as he was to put it in their hands. When he missed by 15 feet, it did not make the highlight reels.
    And for those who say, "Fields may not throw touchdowns, but he can run one in", Well, good, Wilson got one of those too, plus, if Fields is the runner, near the goal, do you think that maybe Harris could have also ran it in? Or Warren? Don't assume it's Fields or NOBODY. But you can pretty much assume it's the quarterbacks job to THROW it in. Which he doesn't, my guess, with a much tougher schedule ahead, Fields would have finished with 11 touchdown passes. You can let me know if you think that's great.
    Wilson is going to have a tough time too, these are some good teams coming up soon, including Baltimore, TWICE and Kansas City. But I think he is far more prepared to take on such teams, than Fields ever could be.
    Remember, Chicago did not think he was a starter and no other team did either, including the Steelers, who offered a 6th round draft pick for him.

    To anyone who watched the Seahawks when Russ was there, none of this is surprising. It is obvious that under competent coaches and a decent offense Wilson can produce. Under Hackett who wasn’t competent even Brady couldn’t have done well. Interestingly, under Payton, who let his massive ego get in the way, Russ did pretty good. In fact, because he was doing so good Payton in a petty and self-serving action, benched Wilson in order to maintain the fiction Payton had promulgated. If he hadn’t, Wilson would have made him look bad and then he couldn’t justify cutting him. Payton only succeeded in New Orleans because he had Brees. Look at his record after Brees retired. Mediocre at best.

      They benched him because he wouldn't give back the 38 million injury clause. That said, I am sure everything you just said plays into that as well. Seemingly, the entire culture of that franchise has become toxic and good ole' Sean only made it worse.
      No doubt that Russ has lost a step, but there were times where I was baffled by a playcall or coaching decision that somehow became Russ's fault. Time will tell, but I'm pretty sure that Pittsburgh is going to be in a much better position than Denver this year. Sean may even "retire" again like he did in New Orleans after his first Brees-less season.

I mean how can you really lose when you get a QB of Wilson’s caliber for $1.2M (give or take) and you are making another team eat the rest of his salary. Peyton hasn’t shown he and his coaching are worth what it’s costing Denver. I’ve been a Seahawks fan since the beginning of their franchise, so watching Wilson do well is like seeing a hometown player make good. What would make it sweeter is if Pittsburgh goes to the playoffs and Denver and Peyton slink into the holidays with their tails tucked.

    Justin is not a starting level, QB he is a great athlete who tries to overcome he weaknesses as a passer by running. The main problem with that is, teams get film on him, see he is not a threat as a passer, then loads up to stop the run. The offense stalls, unable to move the ball constantly, unable to score. Then on top of that, an angry LB catches him coming from the blindside and lays him out. Because he is not RB he gets hurt and the team is left scrabbling.

    Great breakdown! I learned some stuff even! Also, glad to see someone appreciate Wilson. I'm in Seattle, loved when we had Wilson here, quickly got sick of Carrol hamstringing him by terrible coach mentality trying to do O line on the cheap, and even though we had all the weapons we needed (minus a proper O line), carrol stillll tried to get back to having legion of boom. You don't need legion of boom when you have offensive weapons like we had. And Wilson was doomed to fail at Denver, them using that no name HC first year, then payton, I used to think he was a good coach, now it's clear that his success was due to Drew Brees because you DO NOT start sabotaging your QB in the press as soon as you are hire and then proceed to deepen that sabotage the rest of the time until QB leaves. I'm so glad to see Wilson come in first game with a good O line and show what he can do. He was great here, even with or especially with no O line having to run for his life every down, and you don't lose that just because you change teams. So Loved all of this!!!

    One big difference I seen, no big penalties to kill drives or make an easier first down more difficult. Like holding or illegal procedure. I don’t know why Tomlin didn’t go deep with Fields. He threw passes against Clemson 50 yards or more at least 4 times passes were spot on.

    The upsetting part of wilson starting over fields in my eyes has nothing to do with how well he threw the ball. Fields is the future. And wilson is absolutely not worth paying 30 million next year. So why put wilson in now when you either have to keep him next year and cut finances somewhere else on the team that needs it just to pay him. I don't like wilson to begin with. But he's only on the team cause denverr paying the contract not steelers. Steelers would have never got him if they had to pay the 30 mill.

    This is a great video, and nearly 100% on point. Fields was ok, and is worth a shot as the long-term guy, but Wilson is a Super Bowl winner (twice if they hand off to Marshawn Lynch), and is now basically a poor man’s Mahomes, which ain’t at all bad.
    Much as I love them, though, the Steelers may still have a tough time making the playoffs and could easily be one-and-done again if they do. The Ravens’ offense is all-time, the Bengals are a wounded bear, and the Steelers dropped two games to bad/mediocre teams with Fields (Wilson would likely be 7-0 or 6-1). Their remaining non-conference games are very tough. Hard to do better than 10-7 (unless they stay healthy and other teams suffer key injuries) and 9-8 would be good. They need a better running game (it’s just ok) and another outside weapon (Pickens can be shut down with extra coverage). The secondary also has holes. Too bad, because Wilson has not yet gone the way of Aaron Rodgers.

    • @gcwishbone

      I get why they called a pass but damn it hurts. His super bowl throw wasn't bad either, Butler made a crazy play.
      Still, people forget how the Hawks were able to get to the goalline in the first place--a great long pass got them there.

    • @greggorsag9787
      @greggorsag9787 2 дня назад

      @@gcwishbone LOL! Perhaps you can tell that I didn’t like the pass call. It was SECOND-and-goal, with ONE yard to go, and Lynch was unstoppable that year. It’s as close to a guarantee as football gets that if he runs THREE times he gets in. Beast mode. And throwing over the middle into traffic on the 1-yd. line isn’t ever wise, and is almost never done. Too many bodies with the defense bunched up there. And way too much risk for second down. IMO was perhaps the worst play call in SB history. But yeah, a circus catch got them there. Not quite the helmet catch, but close. (You can probably tell from this rant that I’m a Steelers fan!)

    • @gcwishbone
      @gcwishbone 2 дня назад +1

      @@greggorsag9787 Lynch was unstoppable *except* at the goalline that year, actually. And having time for 3 runs wasn't guaranteed; the pass was strategic as an incompletion would've stopped the clock. Still... he is beast mode.
      And yes I don't think going passing into the middle was a good call, especially because it's not Wilson's strength. Throw to the corner or out of bounds; Wilson also could've presented the threat of running it in himself then.

    • @greggorsag9787
      @greggorsag9787 2 дня назад

      @@gcwishbone For what it’s worth, Carroll is on record saying: “We threw it to kind of waste the play . . . we were going to run it on third and fourth down.” The claim is that the Hawks didn’t have the right personnel and didn’t want to waste a time out. Now, to me that’s deflection and likely BS. If you’re kind of wasting the play,” you don’t throw it into traffic in the middle of the field. The most important call of the year and it’s not worth a time out? Alrighty then. Really seems to me Carroll thought he was smarter than everyone else. I suppose he could be protecting Russell, but I doubt that.
      Sad times for the Seahawks players, who deserved it that year. But the good news is that the Steelers have a guy at the helm who SHOULD BE a back-to-back SB champ, and he’s still got some pop.

And I don’t mean just in terms of putting the work in because a lot of guys in the league do that. I mean actually behaving professionally. They act like he is a weirdo just because he doesn’t try to act like a thug or an overgrown college kid like most players.

    FIelds is younger, taller, stronger and arguably more disciplined. But his professional experience was garbage time with the Bears.
    Wilson has been to the playoffs 8/12 times with a 9-7 record and a Super Bowl ring.
    Two of his playoffs misses were due to injury and one to Sean Payton trying to tank. He's only failed to go the distance once on his own merit. Guy's a legit great player and he should go far heading a solid team with no dressing room drama.
