  • I recently bought an 1971 Alfa Romeo 1600 GT Junior with some motorsport parts so I decided to do a POV drive to give you a first impression of what it’s like to drive a classic Alfa Romeo.

I am guessing but that looks like an South African built '74~76. It was named the series 115 which was the 2000 GTV Body, GTV interior and big brakes. It was marketed with either 1300 / 1600 and known as GT Junior Deluxe. Lovely little gem! thanks for posting

Hi it seems these are difficult to identify as there are many imports / slight amendments based on the cars country of origin + people modify them, as far as my research goes I believe my one is a 1300 GT Junior from 1971so that's the first of the late models with the 2.0 look, its UK registered from new and at some stage the engine has been upgraded to a 1600 along with the boot badge aftermarket wheels and suspension etc

@@_jenks_ Thanks for the reply. It is very interesting to know that your car is a '71... The rationalised 115s with 1300/1600 engines in a GTV body (four headlight / big tail lights) and GTV interior including the 4 pod center dash, only started in '74. All RHD GTV cars from '72 were built in South Africa. If you say that this is a '71 UK reg car from new... I think you have a later model car, that at some point was imported from SA, with a chassis number transplant from the original reg'd car that was beyond repair. It's not really a bad thing 'cos the SA cars are mostly from inland dry areas, and the rust issues are minimal. These juniors were very popular in SA and some of the best examples come from there. My gut feel is you have an original 74~76 GT 1.6 junior deluxe, with the wrong chassis number. It's still an Alfa, and still a work of art.

That being said, Alfa's history department hold a lot of the build records, and might be able to solve this, they know the engine numbers matched to chassis's, original colour etc. These are becoming very valuable little cars. If you can solve the history, you might have some decent value on your hands

If it’s got a 1600cc engine, I don’t think you can call it a Jr.

Beautiful car. I have a ‘71 with a 1750cc fuel injected engine, which is the only way they shipped them to the US back then (2litre came out for’72 model year.
1600 cc was considered big bore for European market and 1300cc would be Jr. Your car may have undergone an engine swap, not uncommon.

      Correction,
In 1972 Alfa introduced a1600cc version of the GTJunior. Production ran until 1976. If your car is a ‘71, it’s most likely not a factory 1600 version.
Can’t wait to get mine back on the road…they’re a blast to drive!!!

So mine is a 1300 GT Junior that someone has changed the engine to a 1600 which fits in with your explanation 👍

I had a ‘68 GT junior (1300 cc carbureted) was my first car. I fell in love with that body style and the sound of that engine at an early age. I bought my ‘71 1750 iniezione a year later and drove it throughout my senior year in high school. Sold the’68 in ‘83 and then bought an ‘86 GTV-6 when I graduated college but held on to the’71all these years. Watching all these Alfa driving videos has brought back some great memories and has been inspiring me to get to work on my baby.
      Ciao.
