Hey Dan... I too ride with my feet on the rear pegs on long trips. I also have a Dynojet display fitted and....... surprise, surprise... my temp also rose by 10deg Celsius after I put my feet up on the rear pegs!!!. I don’t have an oil cooler... mine’s stock.. I think it’s just the leg position that changes the air flow. 👍🇦🇺
In AZ $329 for the Love Jugs Mighty Mite fans is money well spent. Drops the temps quickly and you can sit in traffic forever and temps barely creep up. Without the fans, it will shoot over 300 degrees very quickly in stop and go traffic. Turn the fans on and it stays at 240-250 even when stopped dead for a long time. Two things really surprised me. 1) the amount of air moved is way more than I thought those little fans could accomplish- but it’s a lot. 2) riding at 70 down the highway, I thought the fans wouldn’t be doing anything - but they are still really effective. Like dropping the temp from 280 down to 250. This is on a 2015 Freewheeler trike 103HO. Also - I removed the right side plastic air deflector. With both left and right deflectors, it creates dead air behind the rear cylinder. Now with just the left deflector pushing air across the rear cylinder to the right, and the fans doing the same, there’s lots of cross flow and way more hot air exiting the right side.
Thanks David. Yeah I wouldn't have thought so either but it makes sense that your legs channel air to the motor in the standard floor board position, then in other positions they actually create an undesirable airflow situation.
I have a 2019 streetglide m8 107. I live in mesa az. I put a pull fan behind my factory oil cooler and installed over jugs to cool the heads. The bike ru s about 45 to 50 degrees cooler. Made a big difference. The bike has 72,000 miles on it.put the fans on the bike 3 months after I purchased it. Bike runs great.
Dan I am sure the oil cooler was needed in your area. When we came thru Last year on the way to the canyon it was 117 in the mid afternoon. I also had the Dyno Jet on my Fatboy and loved all the info it gave me during operation. I plan to add one to the Road King since it doesn’t have the oil cooled heads like the M8. This way I can keep my eye on temps and any other info I need. With all the mods I am adding I should start a channel, but after 5 years retired and only 60 years old I am afraid it could be more like a job. Mods that I am adding are grips, bars fairing Led lights, wheels, tuner, intake cam, header, already added seat, Electric center stand, 21 inch wheel in front matching wheel in back 16. That will get me started. Good vid!
Yeah Marty, I try REALLY hard to make sure my RUclips channel doesnt turn into a job but it is a tight rope walk of trying to stay consistent, topical, and entertaining yet not creating a second full time job for myself. In all reality I probably do put too much time into this but I enjoy it. It wouldnt hurt to try creating a channel if you think its something you might enjoy doing but dont take it too seriously at first.
@@GearsGadgets Well I appreciate what you do and I enjoy your content. Keep up the good work and I am going to set back and let you show them how to grow a channel. Maybe sometime in the future we can have a cold soda together. The wife and I travel out that way a couple times a year. Have a brother in Tucson and I am going to try and make my first Sturgis trip on the bike in 2021. Take care
I've learned over the years to just ride bowlegged and will channel cool air under your legs. No heat rash on my thighs when I do and it makes a difference after just a couple of hundred miles.
If I remember right, the M8 temp sensor is on the front side of the rear cylinder so between the cooler and your knee position when on the back peg, looks like you're blocking all the air. Hope you get it worked out.
I love you man, so don't take any of these comments in the wrong light. 1) Dude, get a bike lift for that big boy. That jack is way too sketchy. 2) You may have about a BAZILLION bugs clogging up the veins in your cooler. Most likely because it's right out in front there. 3) 300 degrees would be freaking me out of my skull! When my engine temps get up to around 200 to 210, I start getting worried and it gets hot in the man regions...lol The biggest reason my bike is liquid-cooled. It really does make a huge difference. And lastly, damn boy, nice bug collection you've got there...lol Get a washrag on that thing ! Love the channel man. You should have ten times the amount of subscribers you do. Eric
Thanks man, I don’t take any offense at all. I would love to get a lift but I also don’t want to take up a ton of floor space either. I’ve looked at a few. My bike has always run around 270 head temp. I always reference head temps (right or wrong). I would love to get an Ultra at some point but again, space and money. I appreciate the kind words.
It would be interesting to know where it's measuring the temperature. Air flow can be a problem with longitudinal v-twins and I wonder if there's another place to mount that cooler. The touring frame bikes mount the stock cooler low in the front.
Have you considered love jugs ive fitted them on my 2014 fatboy, also have fitted and oil cooler, temperature is regularly below 250,love jugs come into their own in traffic where oil coolers have little effect in keeping temps down, thats my experience anyway,EBS also reduced temperature further,i conceed the love jugs aren't attractive but they work well
Correct me if I’m wrong but it looked like the additional oil cooler you took off was inside a box. In other words it appeared that the air could not flow through it. If this is the case, then you would have a lot of air flow restriction. What about running a full synthetic or semi synthetic blend oil. This alone may help your high temps.
The UltaCool does have screens front and back and plenty of air does run through it. Might have just been the way it looked on video. I do run full synthetic as well.
The engine temp sensor reads off the front cylinder so rear cylinder is gonna be up some compared to the front. Get the Jim's force air and add a fan to the oil cooler. Cooling oil is top priority.
Hi Dan I've had my Dynojet on my Road King read 335. My friend had his Road Glide up to 350. If you didn't have the Dynojet showing you the engine temperature you wouldn't think the engine was running hot. We both live in Las Vegas NV.

This OEM Oil Cooler doesn’t have a fan drawing air through it to help cool it down? I would rather retro fit a fan than another oil cooler to help bring down the temperature when you’re bike is sitting idling.
It does not have a fan on the OEM cooler and there is virtually NO space to put one unless you put it on the front which would block airflow when the fan was off.
Harley engines have always ran too hot, the back jug runs to 300 deg at times and just cooks the oil. After only 500 miles or so the oil runs out black and thin as water! Hi Dan, why don’t you try and keep the additional oil cooler but rather have it on the frame why don’t you put it on the crash bars so it would one. put it more inline with your leg and two. Open up that gap where it was positioned before. What about if you hung it horizontally above the oem oil cooler still keeping it on the main frame but wouldn’t restrict any airflow from either side of your legs and will still get front on airflow though the wind ?? 🤔
I wanted to remove it just to verify that it was or wasnt part of the issue. I just dropped a video today showing that it is NOT the oil cooler causing the issue at all.
When you talk about engine temps are you talking about oil temps and actual engine temps as in CHTs? On your iPhone I don't think it was showing oil temps.
Engine head temps. Being the M8 has oil cooled heads it is somewhat an indication of oil temps as well. Keeping the oil cooler means the oil going to the heads to do some cooling by in turn is cooler and helping to keep temps down. The Ultra Cool does not show oil temps because Harleys do not come with a temp sensor for oil.
I would also check the accuracy of your sending unit. Youre riding in cool weather, you're wearing a jacket, you're not smacking the motor, 270+ just seems high. The rear jug does runs about 40 degrees hotter than the front jug, but 270+ still seems high. Head Temps will be higher than jug temps too. So your hottest point on the engine is your rear head. Modifying a stock air cooled bike with an aftermarket oil cooler, and then modifying the aftermarket part (oil cooler) and the stock parts so the aftermarket part (oil cooler) will work in the bikes original stock configuration. Who’d a thunk you would have air flow problems over the non stock oil cooler. No offense but looks like you may need a water cooled bike in your stable. Don’t get me wrong, I personally love an air cooled bike for simplicity. The 2003 Suzuki Bandit 1200 I owned for 4 years was great, except sitting in traffic in the summer with no airflow over the engine or through the oil cooler caused lots of pinging when pulling away from a red light till airflow movement dropped the engine temps.
300 hunderd degrees is very hot this will destroy your oil and your motor harleys are tuned very lean have a pro tune your bike richer my cvo did not have an oil cooler but it does have the liquid cooled heads does the ultra cooler have a fan on iti have this now on my bike and it works very well dont loose the oil cooler that will be a mistake you may want to run it lower so it sits in colder air heat rises my bike got so hot it destroyed my valve train their is a red plastic piece in the harley cable clutches that breaks and then you loose all your cable tension they have an upgrade for this you will want to do this before it leaves you stranded the fan assisted ultra cooler will keep your oil temp down to 210 degrees which wont cook your oil or your engine i saw where you had your oil cooler its blocked by the wind shield and when you put your feet up you block it even more and 115 degrees in the desert does not help either get it down by the floor boards and see what happens when its open to cooler air good luck it cost me$ 6500.00 to put my motor back together
@@GearsGadgets I’m enjoying the videos. I could see (5 months ago) my PV temp change if I move my feet from boards to highway pegs. Or just push my knees out in the breeze more. The 2003 Suzuki Bandit 1200 I owned for 4 years was great, except sitting in traffic in the summer with no airflow over the engine or through the oil cooler caused lots of pinging when pulling away from a red light till airflow movement dropped the engine temps.
I would love to swing an Ultra but I’m kind of waiting on the next HD touring frame. Its gotta be coming soon.
You should have just moved in down in-between frame and cash bar.
Mine too .. I’m considering wrapping the pipes , my answer so far is to wrap my jeans into my socks
Good idea.
My 88cu Road King burns me lol
I would be interested to know engine temps on the 88

Good insight on video. There are products that will help.
Hooah.
Thanks I will check it out.
Does adding an oil cooler mean more oil capacity too?
Just a little for the capacity of the cooler and lines but I am guessing its probably a quarter of a quart if that.
Dan,
I think you're thought on the air flow and oil cooler unit is the answer... It sounds logical... Where is your OEM horn located on your bike?
The OEM horn is center of the frame up front right under the tank.
@@GearsGadgets do you have a OEM horn cover?
Add a tank lift and leave the ultra cool
That is an interesting thought. Might go that route.
I think your legs are causing air turbulence and slowing the air around the heads.
I believe it.
Pay a visit to DK Customs channel to blow your mi d on cooling your bike.
I will have to check it out.
Interesting. Sub’d.
Thanks for the sub!
Check DK Customs info on cooling your v twin

Interesting read. I am going to do something. Just not sure what yet.
@@GearsGadgets I’m enjoying the videos. I could see (5 months ago) my PV temp change if I move my feet from boards to highway pegs. Or just push my knees out in the breeze more.
I’m in a colder climate, so probably wouldn’t get extreme hot. 280 or 290 was most I saw on my twin cam - probably different sensor location. Didn’t have the PV on very often.
Probably sumping.
Im not sure, I guess I will find out if the temps do the same thing without the ultra cool on it. I will be testing it on a longer ride this week.
@@GearsGadgets I find it hard to believe that's the cause.
a) It's a radiator and they're designed to flow air.
b) Have you ever seen all the crap hanging on the crash bars and blocking air on a Road on an Ultra?
Does it feel like its losing any power? That's another tell as the crank churns oil.
Maybe a tank lift
Thats an interesting idea. I will certainly look into it.
🙄
🗽
It’s because it’s a Harley get a Indian and you will be fine lol
lol I was waiting for that comment.
@@GearsGadgets to each their own as long as you ride don’t care what brand not a fan of the Crotch rockets because of the way they ride but I don’t have to ride them and as long as they don’t put me or anyone else in danger I fine with them.
I would sell it and buy a Goldwing😁
I do love the Goldwing.
