It is likely Mary Beard has adult children of her own that she is also a grandmother.
If you watch her with the cradle in her Pompei doco her empathy to motherhood is evident. Your comment suggests that somehow a woman can’t be both a respected intellectual and a parent/grandparent.

I travelled to Pompeii in 1989 and it was one of the most wonderful trips of my life. I went in November as I had a little break between job and it was the only time I could go. At that time it was very seasonal and so hardly anyone was there. Perhaps I'm romanticising it but I remember walking around virtually alone. I bribed a guard to be allowed into buildings and a garden not open to the public. This is now open and called the Garden of Venus, I believe. I've been obsessed with the ancient world and Italy in general since, including Medieval and renaissance periods and sites. To the degree that I don't feel fully alive at home in Edinburgh and visiting is like a light is turned on and every moment I am alive. I don't know why I am so happy and love every moment of life so much in Italy but hate ever moment here in Scotland. I love beauty and art I guess and here the streets are filled with drunken idiots. The idea of beauty is meaningless in Scottish culture. Italians want it is everything from a cup of coffee to a work of art.

from the museum of Naples. The area is a World Heritage Site as such is for the world to enjoy and understand, for many people they may never have the opportunity to travel to the site. The British Museum has been held responsible for “stealing “ the fresco from the Parthenon in Greece. In reality they were sold to Lord Elgin by the Greek government and subsequently to the British Museum. Had they not been sold, the odds are that they would no longer be in existence.

The thing about stamping bread dough that was brought to the bakers for baking at about 43:00 was a thing in the UK until ovens that could bake became commonplace in homes. I'm not sure why Peter Snow is so surprised, as he must have heard the nursery rhyme:
    Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man.
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
Pat it and prick it, and mark it with B,
Put it in the oven for Baby and me.

Mary Beard is a highly educated woman .. she is very qualified in this area. No One alive today can come close to her knowledge ... The artifacts were leant to the British Museum by Italy... wonderful. Peter Snow is a former news reader .. and can't stop himself interrupting. He is very knowledge on battle field history. I very much enjoyed this tour .. Thanks British Museum.

You have to go to pompeii to understand, feel, touch and know pompei. Ive been 6 times, know every corner every building every discovery. Its more than a passion for me, its my life. Sadly i cant get there as often as i like but every chance i get i walk into this ancient ruin and can see it as was that fateful day. Id love to be allowed to excavate i really would!

Normally I might find these sorts of presentations quite dry and boring, but this captivated by interest for the whole duration. I applaud the 'straight talk' adult content and slang, as I cant imagine kids would be remotely interested in stuffy old history videos. The delightful presenters brought this collection to life in a way even a curator would struggle to do, and if I were near London I would love to explore it after this heads up. At least a hundred thousand people got to see this, proving popularity. One tip: seeing the presentors faces on the cover image for this video would get x3 times the views and responses, and its never too late to change this to a more official branded channel to get more views. This is THE British Museum, after all, and you are right to feel proud of it.

Herculaneum wasn't killed by a pyroclastic flow like Pompeii, but a "lahar" or mudslide. This is why the material covering it is so much more difficult to dig through than excavating Pompeii. The volcanic mud that covered Herculaneum dried and hardened into what is effectively solid concrete. It's also why what has been uncovered at Herculaneum was so much better preserved than what has been found at Pompeii.

    Hello from Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦
Seeing the family from the house of the golden bracelet truly does bring the horror and tragedy of the eruption fully to life, so to speak. The knowledge of this family’s end is just so very heartbreakingly poignant and touching. As always, I am relieved to know that they did not suffer slow, painful deaths at the end. It is truly a blessing that they didn’t truly know what was about to happen to them.
This exhibit in particular is fascinating to me. I was in my early teens when the bodies preserved in plaster were first introduced to the public in a National Geographic magazine, and it fully engaged my imagination and lit a lifelong interest in both archeology and anthropology. Although I eventually would go into clinical psychology as a career, had my life gone a little differently I would have loved to become an archeologist. We learn so much from history, and Pompeii and Herculaneum are such rich and varied instructors.
FWIW, I am in agreement with the experts to preserve and protect what has already been found, leave the rest to future generations to discover and learn from. Thank you so much for putting this online, I have quite enjoyed it.

That was great and very very interesting. I feel bad about complaining about any aspect, but the presenter was extremely irritating, what with interrupting the experts (I was interested in what Mary Beard was saying about slaves but he just forced her to move on) and letting his modern day biases about everything from the taste of the food to the smells to the gods come to the fore. Nothing to do with his age (so many ageist comments on here), he is just a lousy presenter.

Alison Manion agreed! I was getting so frustrated. I just wanted to hear what she was saying but he would interrupt her mid sentence. Then him chuckling while they were talking about the people dying towards the end was just disturbing.

Could have been bad or lack of producing/guidance while shooting the segments, I expect they would have a very small crew on sight while filming due to wanting to minimize risks.
But yes the very frequent interruptions are distracting.

I totally agree, about not being in a hurry to excavate more areas, before conservation of the areas already exposed. First visit to Pompeii, areas were freshly excavated. Have photos of paintings & mosaics now cut out and in the museum. Was a wonder to wonder about shooting several hundred photos. Next visit back, left me mortified at the state of Pompeii. Scaffolding & plywood everywhere holding up walls ready to collapse. Years of neglect and corruption within the government, left this wonderful site, a total disaster. So, am very thankful to see so much of their culture preserved and safely in museums for future generations to marvel at. The the most part, the presenters were enlightening. And listening to Bettany Hughes and Mary Beard exchanging ideas was brilliant. The only downer was Mr. Showboat aka Peter Snow, constantly interrupting and pretty much, just rude & ignorant of the Pompeii culture. Doubt he played outside much as a child. Otherwise thoroughly enjoyed and learned quite a number of new things. Thank you.
