This is the best series I've seen on Reaper's midi editor, really a huge help! One trick I've been trying to figure out is if there is a to ripple delete between two midi notes. Do you have any suggestions for that? It would essentially make reaper complete for me.
I think the great thing about REAPER is it's community, the kind of people it attracts, true hackers that get to the core of things and aren't distracted
These videos are great. You are inspiring me to dig deeper into all the customizations. I hope your channel keeps growing and you do well here on RUclips.

Hi, great video, but why are some actions missing when I search them through the filter list, like "zoom to time selection" and "duplicate selected notes one octave"? I only want to add certain shortcuts. Am I missing something?
Hey man! Your videos are amazing! I have a question. How do you bind the hotkey that allows you to use AWSD to select midi notes. I'd love to know which action you are using to do that :) Thank you!!
Thanks for the kind words! Check out 6:06 and I have a list of all the actions. Go to action list (you can press the shift+? Key) on the top where it says section, select MIDI Editor, then search for each action, press Add and hit the hotkey. Take a few mins to aet set up but it's worth it!
oh nvm I found it :) Select note of same/left or right pitch. I subbed to your channel because you are the only one I found covering this stuff in this detail!! Can't wait to watch more.
Great video! I found your editing velocity tip to be very helpful. My question is where in Reaper's setting can I can create my own hotkeys to bind my own commands (i.e 'w', 'a', and so forth) to edit and create different ranges from 1 or 10% louder or softer when editing velocities? Also can I set the midi's velocities to show the dynamics (i.e. 58, 72, or 39) without having to use my mouse to drag and lower or raise a midi's velocity? If so, how can I set this?
Hey Eric, To create your own hotkeys: Go to actions list (Actions>Action list or press ?) and then on the top right from the dropdown menu choose MIDI Editor and you will see the list of actions in the MIDI Editor. Find the command you want from my list (you can also search for them on the top left window), then click on it, click on add on the bottom left, and press the key you want in the window that pops up. For seeing the velocity value, from the same actions list menu (MIDI Editor) look for 'View: Show velocity numbers on notes' and run it once. It'll now show the velocity numbers in the lane :)
Question, is it good practice to always try to draw in and edit notes with the keyboard or just try to grab and manipulate notes with mouse? I am confused on how to strike a balance. Maybe is there an example of you composing with midi that could help? Edit: I am wondering if it is useful to have these things: Ability to zoom in so that the notes are vertically bigger so I can more accurately place notes with my mouse; and ability to just single left click to place a note and dragging out note length, instead of having to do the thing where you have to move the cursor a bit to the left when single clicking before it starts placing and before you can start making it bigger to taste.
Hey great question! I think it totally depends on what you prefer, but I always start by playing some stuff, then editing with additional notes and Quantization :)
@@IDDQDSound Ah okay thanks. I do have a digital keyboard and ideally I'd like to compose midi by playing, but I am afraid that voicemeeter or something else is adding too much input latency. Have you made a video about that yet? Also my piano playing isn't that great haha. One last question is: You have a lot of tutorials but I am wondering if you've considered making a "start here" playlist in your channel just so I know where to click if I'm a beginner.
Can I create hotkeys to trigger events within a VST? (ie., left arrow key triggers a VST effect on or off. Or triggers items within a VST itself, like if a keyboard had a phaser). I have a bluetooth pedal that is really a page turning device but thought I could use it to trigger events in a VST in reaper since it has keystrokes mapped to each switch.
Hey Mark! nice idea and interesting question! It depends on the VST. For example, in waves plugins, You can run SWS actions to toggle next or previous preset. Also if you have windows there's a hacky way of making actions that click on a specific area of your screen, but yeah if you can tell me the name of the plugin in question maybe it could be done :) You could also see if you can use CSI to map your device to MIDI commands :)
Hello friend, whe ni move beetween notes with A D S W my edit cursos changes together, i noticed in urs it doesnt change it.. how i do that? prevent from moving the edit cursor
Hi mate, I recently watched a video where there guy was using abeleton I think it was, anyway, he wrote out a d Minor scale in 3 octaves and pressed "fold" and it got rid of all the notes that aren't in d Minor, leaving him with d Minor with no spaces between the notes on the midi grid, then wrote a song with just random notes that were all in d Minor, looked great and didn't know this was possible, how can I do this in reaper?
