Great to see the dutch emergency services passing on the right side! Not like in e.g. Germany where they prefer to get stuck in traffic. Is it common in the Netherlands that emergency vehicles only pass on the right when traffic stucks on interstates?
Depens. Most interstates have a special lane for broken down vehicles and for emergency vehicles to pass. It is illegal to drive there as a regular motorist. But when those lanes are stuck too, police will clear whichever lane is fastest, to enable FD and EMT to pass to the scene.
Small correction: ALL Highways (or "Interstates") in NL have at least an emergency lane on the right side, it's one of the requirements to get the Highwaystatus (as applies for non-level crossings). There are only a small number exceptions, mostly old bridges. In case of 3+ lanes, there's in most cases also one on the left side. During rush hours, they used as normal lanes, indicated by overhead signalling. In case of emergency, control room can "Cross" that lane within seconds to clear it for EV's. In case no emergency lane is available, the 'German' approach is promoted: Left lane to the left, right lane to the right, indicated by permanent road signes.
