James Twitter / cinemassacre
Ultraman for Super Nintendo from 1991. Based on the 60's TV show. Ultraman is a kaiju fighting game where you play as Ultraman and fight giant monsters!! #retro #retrogaming #nes #snes #jamesrolfe #mikematei #atari #playthrough #gameplay #gamereview
When I was a kid, I rented Megaman X3 from my local Kroger and when I took it home, it was this game! Someone had switched the circuit boards inside the game cartridge!! The cashier could not understand what I was talking about haha
Ouch but that’s pretty sneaky
Evil genius in the making right there.
I never would have thought the Ultraman game would be something James would showcase.
For anyone who doesn’t know, this is based on the Australian Ultraman series, known as “Ultraman: Towards the Future.” In Japan, this Ultraman is called “Ultraman Great”.
Glad to see someone point out this.
They play like noobs
Exactly. I was going to comment this because people generally confuse Ultraman Great with the Original Ultraman from 1966, but you already did it for me :)
@
Leonardo Bento de Souza
Ultra Series is continued from that time and generally term apply to them all. So I not see what is your point here? He only pointed on which series specifically game is based.
Yes I know. I praised him for exactly that. My english sucks so maybe it was not very clear lol
Damn Mike, can James finish a freaking sentence without you cutting him off.
yea James was trying to reminisce about Ultraman a half dozen times but was cut because Mike wanted him to do something in the game. :(
He does that shit ALOT.
Holy shit yes
@Papy ross You're a choir boy compared to me
@Papy ross well you must be very proud of yourself
I remember that Games Master magazine gave the Mega Drive version of this a score of 1%.
Yep. One.
i played the arcade version and is atrocius
theme music of Ultraman Great is awesome in TV series, too~
Hey! Didn't expect to see you here. You're a fan of James Rolfe/AVGN?
Yes, I am~
Hi atsuki! I’ve been watching videos of yours for 7 years! My favorite is ULTRASEVEN IN FE3
Surprised to see you here!
It's so "Great" that I put it in my phone and listen to it when ever I feels to
Why are James and Mike videos so comfy?
Its like the most chill thing on youtube i've ever watched. Just sit back with a drink or something, and relax with these guys as they play whatever and casually talk about it.
Compared to the flashy, noisy videos everyone else posts on here, It just feels so good.
Thomas Rabbit for sure
Ikr. I love this shit. Also james and mike are like one of the grratest persons ever
That's why it's so fun to watch. They're not pro gamers and they don't have to be. They're just guys who like playing retro video games and talking about nostalgic shit. I always see people complain that they're not playing the games properly or they're missing stuff and I feel they're missing the point of these videos which is to either relive childhood experiences or discover games by their own fruition just like when you'd maybe rent a game back in the day that you knew nothing about. The casual nature of the banter and play makes them a lot more relatable.
You sir, are doing it right.
Broken Wave friends are overrated bruh
This is actually a port of the Ultraman arcade game (which was also ported to the Genesis) and the US version is based on the Towards the Future series. The Japanese versions of the Ultraman game are based on the original Ultraman series. Also Ultraman's finisher is the Specium Ray.
The gameboy version of Ultraman sucks semenfuck
Play it then you'll understand why
I got rights to call the game whatever i want
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon would be an excellent game for James to play on the show, given how much he loves old-school Castlevania.
I;ve been trying to get them to!
The Satellite yesss
Smokey McJoint Mike does take suggestions for future videos from the comments on Twitch chat when he streams. I'm sure he's gonna get James to play that because he made like 5 different streaming videos of that game, and it's basically a new classic castlevania game. You have to remember though they get like 1 day a month to record James and Mike Mondays s they will spend the entire day recording and then release the videos in parts once a week, sometimes different games each video and sometimes all the same game. So wait a month or two and we should see James playing Curse of the Moon.
@PersonGuy3000 ...wait, they do?
@The Satellite - do you think either of them even know that game exists? James especially seems to live under a rock that he has lived under since the 90s.
Mike streamed the game and did most, if not all of the endings. It’s on the other Cinemassacre channel where they play games in their entirety.
Edit: It’s on the Cinemassacre Plays channel and probably on Mike’s Twitch channel too.
10 Years here, finally, i love ultraman game
Being a huge fan of Ultraman, I used to play this all the time when I was younger. Eventually did get around to beating it. There are also two Super Famicom Ultraman games that use this engine. One of the games is based on the original 60's Ultraman series and the other is based on the Ultra 7 series.
Kinnikuman was originally an Ultraman parody before becoming a wrestling parody with the Chojin tournament, the actual reason Suguru (king muscle) joins the tournament was for rapresent Japan because Ultraman was defeated by Robin Mask in the previous tournament.
It's amazing how Ultraman inspired so many good stuff
You should try the other ultraman games on the super famicom, they use the same engine as this one but are based off the original show and ultraseven.
Great video!
sad that they are basically the same but with different monsters
why would you want to play a game that uses the same engine as this. it looks bad.
Just so you know, ultraman x came out 3 years ago, currently the latest ultraman series is Ultraman Geed, and upcoming one is Ultraman Russo/Blu
James says "Intendo" when he pronounces Nintendo
Me and my bro beat this game as children. We found it used, plugged it in, and thought it was the coolest thing ever.
I liked this game as a kid, but then I had seen the anime Ultraman, and some of the original, as well as Ultra 7, so I knew what it was. This was also around the time that Ultraman show was airing in the US. They had toys out and everything. I remember seeing them at KB Toys, and I still have one to this day. There's actually an Ultra 7 game that is a lot like this one, but on the Genesis. It never made it over here, but you can pick out capsules and play as other monsters instead of Ultra 7 in that one.
My dad used to watch Ultra Seven... I feel so proud. =)
mike and the megaman rageout at the end made me giggle.
Now do some Kamen Rider games!
If they do Kamen Rider on SNES that would be awesome.
yeeeeaaaa
I am totally on board with this idea too
Famicom has some.
Adam Mangum Famicom ones are pretty terrible though. I wonder if there are any good KR games on 16-32 bit consoles besides SNES one.
i had this game as a kid. i think we got it from the flea market or some yard sale. i loved it lol
Bloodstained Curse of the Moon would be perfect for J&MM!
Mike raging at Mega Man at the end is hilarious.
I was there live when he did that lol
He attempted a no-hit run there. Imagine trying something like that in Dark Souls...
Mike is the real AVGN.
He definitely has more passion and seems committed to the fans.
Can I marry you?
btw, I'm loving these Mike Matei live bumps at the end. I can tell you guys put in extra work there and it's a nice little cherry on top of the episode.
I had this game it was one of those buys you make as a kid and just keep trying to make it fun
I'm so glad Games watched Ultraman and Ultraseven! I really hope he keeps going with the series because there's so much and it's pretty much all good.
While it's true that Ultraman is originally a character from a long-running Japanese Television franchise that is still going to this very day.
This particular game on Super Nintendo, was actually in fact created as a tie-in for an Australian TV series of the same exact title. Ultraman: Towards The Future. It was a co-produced TV series from Tsuburaya Productions and the South Australian Film Corporation.
Always was a big fan of Ultraman and the many spinoff series released over the years. Wish I could find some of the fighting games released on PS2, those were pretty good.
JadeLightningDash FE3 and FER are pretty good, but I prefer FE3 because it has more content and feels easier to play than FER
Sadly, these games were only in Japan.
That final boss was such a pain.
I used to play an Ultraman game on PS1. If I remembrr correctly, a lot of the moves were the same on different characters, but shit was fun when we were kids. James and Mike should look more into PS1 games, a lot of classics over there.
you can watch the latest Ultraman on Crunchy Roll as well
Ultraman was also in The Great Battle series with Kamen Rider and Gundam
I remember renting this game... ruined my weekend
At least you only rented it, and didn't have to feel guilty for having your mom waste $50 buying it...
Wow, your Mom bought this trash? I remember my Mom rented this for me, I told her to never rent a game for me without me bein' there again.
Well unfortunately guys all Ultraman fighting games run on the same engine. Except for the one on the Gameboy Advance. They went with a traditional Street Fighter engine... And it turned out pretty well.
I just picked up Ultra Man at Too Many Games... Thanks for taking a picture with me... Love AVGN and your other content as well...
I remember this game in 91 damn I feel old.
James and Mike should play Crystalis on the NES. That game is legendary and a gem missed by hardcore gamers. That game is probably the best game on the NES that most people don't know about. It was mentioned in Nintendo Power and even had a walkthrough and largely it just has a cult following. Not saying this game has a cult following, but at most I would rate this game average because most people probably would play it but not return to it. It would be a game to try. As for Crystalis, that game should have resulted in sequels by how good it is.
Mike has said in his live streams that he has the game and it's on his list to play
Which livestream was this?
I think that game is by far the best unknown game of all time on the NES. Some say it is average but I beg to differ. Crystalis is amazing!
John Siciliano Have not played it but I've heard amazing things about it from credible sources. (experienced youtubers and lifelong gamers) I even heard someone on MetalJesusRocks say he thinks it's better than original Zelda
Judson Joist Also a game on my list. Gotta appreciate the classics!
John Siciliano Totally agree, it may be the best game on the NES.
I think TNT would have episodes of Ultraman really early in the morning (3 or 4am)... maybe right before all the Looney Toons cartoons. I never understood what I was actually watching, though.
That was Ultra Seven you were watching. They even showed the banned episode. Episode 12 - From a Planet With Love
This actually looks pretty decent. I mean the rough controls are something you could get around, the game itself looks decent in concept.
James, you should come to the Godzilla Convetion here in Chicago called G-Fest! It’s definitely a place that Godzilla and tokusatsu fans should check out!
I had this game as a kid. It took me forever to figure out how to inflict the final blow to kill the monsters since this was before the internet. This video definitely brought back memories.
Would love to see you play Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. It's one of my favorites even though most of the fan base hates it, but I'd love to hear you rip on it
My third and last Super Nintendo Game .
I love Ultraman .
Makes me think of Superhuman Syber Squad
Lol, Mike really doesn't want to play this game, lol.
I loved this game as a kid. Rented it several times from a local supermarket.
I lmaoooooooooo at that ending piece omg lol
For those who don't know Joueur Du Grenier played ultraman on SNES and also ultraman isn't very famous in France.
This might sound odd to say but when I was a kid I actually thought this game was super human samurai cybersquad because ultraman looked a little bit like servo I mean yeah I know it’s called gridman for that show in Japanese
B_side 86 There definitely is a relation of some kind if I remember.
Super Human Samurai Syber Squad is the US version of an Ultraman series called Gridman that's why Servo looks like Ultra because is kinda an ultra but its an spin off of the Ultra Series.
B_side 86 Superhuman Samurai was the shit.
ol' school Tony Carter I know lol
GBlastMan interesting hmm
I remember that around when the SNES came out, there was a SNES player's guide that you got with a Nintendo Power subscription and this was one of the games covered in it.
someone says ultraman than i'm destined to be here thanks james and mike!
Great to see Ultraman be showcased on this channel again! :)
I'm afraid that's not the "original Ultraman" but is the series known in Japan as "Ultraman Great (ウルトラマングレート)," known to be co-produced and filmed in Australia hence its non-Japanese cast. The show apparently aired in the US too which is probably why the game was released in English.
Not apparently. It did air in the U.S. and it was on in syndication for years (at least until '93). I watched that thing all the time.
The end with mike raging was hilarious 🤣
I had this game. I loved it
I'll never forget Jontron's reaction to Bogun.
Watch Mike cuss and slap his couch angrily on Twitch! lol. Funny ad.
I totally rented this back in the day. It ruined my weekend
James & Mike HAVE to try out a game called Retro City Rampage! They would absolutely love it!
I watched Ultraman Ace and Taro a lot when I was a kid.
I love to listen you guys in the background while im cooking or playing a game.
you just brought me so many memories of my youth with this game! thanks man!!!!!
ウルトラマングレート!!!
I have this game CIB...
.. because my neighbor conned me into trading Final Fantasy II for it when I was 10.
caffeineadvocate you have my sympathy .
That's tantamount to trading a bar of gold for a cow patty.
...the worst thing I’ve heard all day:,(
I can do him better. I got conned into trading away my Final Fantasy II for Demolition Man on Genesis when I was a kid :(
Never played Demolition Man, so I have no idea how bad it may have been. Hard to believe it could be worse than Ultraman.
Tokusatsu in general needs more love. Especially Kamen Rider
I played the Ultraman video game from the 60's Japanese version. I liked it better than Towards the Future.
When James is about to educate but mike just says fuck it press X
I have vague memories of the TV show Don't remember much except that what I saw of it I liked
when i was a kid i liked watching super human samurai syber squad, or "gridman" in japan. he was a version of ultraman but in the computer. this video reminded me of it.
James and Mike Sunday
Smokey McJoint funny, then how did I watch it on Sunday? Wouldn't that mean I was ahead?
Nothing like a little Ultraman nostalgia.
My eldest cousin actually beat this game when I was little
Being a nightowl really has an advantage with these uploads.
In_The_ Name_Of_Satire the minute it turns Monday
tanman1110 Yeah it's like right when Mike finished editing and rendering the video he uploaded.
*MECHA STREISAND* baabooola baaaabooola
Call Sidney Poitier, we need his help!
A game i rented once from the video store as a kid. Played it because i had to. I remember it making me feel weird.
I remember seeing this in Nintendo Power way back when. The Mode 7 scaling still looks good for the "grow" parts.
I had this way back in the day. It was what it was. I kinda wish I still had it.
lol mike blowing up on twitch is still hillarious
Cool it's still Sunday over her so I'm watching James and Mike Mondays on a Sunday 😁
I remember playing the game, when I was a kid you can avoid some of the laser attacks by doing backflips
Oddly enough, there's a version of this game with different monsters based on Ultra Seven on the Super Famicom. Same play mechanics and such. However James/Mike, if you wanna see Godzilla in a series like this I recommend Zone Fighter, as that was Toho's answer to Ultraman. And yes there's an Ultraman like character and he teams up with Godzilla in a couple episodes..and even King Gidorah comes out as a villain.
James plays and Mike talks! So typical!
5 seconds into the video and Mike’s face says it all.
When I was a kid my best friend wanted to play this and royal rumble all the fuckin time, and we owned so many good games. That shit pisses me off to this day!
If Jet Jaguar came from Ultraman, does that mean that all these Japanese kaiju franchises are connected?
I just had to Shuwatch this one. ;)
i remember buying this from a rental store, surprised they let me take it back and choose another game.
Loved this game as a kid!
I think my most enduring freak outs were when I tried to Platinum Trophy Rayman Origins. Mike at the end with the mega man live vids is pretty much exactly my experience with RO. I succeeded in the end. Only other Platinum I got besides the one for HD DBZ Budokai Collection for PS3. I think I was mentally prepared to play Super Meat Boy after RO. That's probably why I amazingly freaked out less on SMB.
Great trailer for Mike's Livestream at the end. Love your new channel artwork/intro Mike! Awesome job
I could see The Nerd try to cover "What were beyond Power Rangers?" like he did the mock-ups of Mortal Kombat.
Ultra man is basically what giant Ant man is
Ultraman Seven would end up being the most playable version of this SNES games versions.
It's a shame James binged all those MMPR, but didn't get past 1967 in the Ultra series. I find it much, much more watchable.
Mike streams are awesome btw
I loved that show! I used to have those really cheap plastic toys as a kid.
You can also see where Pokemon gets its ideas for new monsters to create. ^_^
Why do I have this memory of Ultraman using this bazooka-looking light gun? Am I crossing my wires?
The backflip lets you avoid energy attacks.
my friend had this growing up. Everyone hated it but I liked it
I had the Ultra-man toys. They were awesome.
Do a AVGN on Drakken for snes🙂
I feel like I’m the only one who LOVED this shitty game as a kid. It was a super unique fighter for the time period.
