    If you go stay at Blue Surf Sanctuary, there's a great little bar right on the beach next to it that serves really good food. they have amazing staff and the waves are less crowded on that side of town. also if you get a chance go do the fishing tours on mal pais. you will catch so much good fish you will have no idea what to do with it all.

    I just booked a trip here in July, now I'm concerned you created a crowd! thanks for the info, I love your reviews....Otro was booked so we are staying at Latitude 10 and Canaima Chill House...before we head to Nosara and stay at The Living Hotel.

    • @SurfboardShredShow
      @SurfboardShredShow  9 лет назад +2

      Gregory Klein Good point on crowds - I thought long about this before uploading... Here's what I think is most important: infrastructure limitations (especially water limitations) prevent anything larger than boutique development here. One local I spoke with who has lived in Santa Teresa for 10 years said this area is safe from the question of Tamarindo or Jaco style development for another ten years. A Hilton doesn't seem to be coming soon.... A couple more reasons not to fret: Santa Teresa has not been a secret for years and years already and peaks still go unridden. Also the beach spreads out crowds nicely. Re: lodging - Stayed at Canaima before and really enjoyed it. Wish you a good trip.

    Hey thank you so much for this video. My girlfriend and I went and stayed at Otro Lado after seeing this and it blew our expectations away. Not only was the hotel perfect, but we were able to go on a lot of fun adventures like take a quad to Montezuma falls and go ziplining in mal pais. On top of that, Playa Santa Teresa was absolutely a dream come true. One question I had for you was about the rental cars. We ended up getting screwed over by our rental car agency and it was a really stressful situation (made my girlfriend cry). The company wanted to charge us $1000 for insurance on the car and I was so upset about this I told them to shove it. The problem then became that we needed to make it to the ferry before the last one of the night departed. We ended up renting a kind of janky little SUV from a company in a sketchy part of town (they were actually very nice and accommodating though). So my question is: what rental agency did you book with on what website and how much did it cost with insurance factored in. We would really appreciate an answer as we plan to relive this dream vacation again this summer. Cheers. - Kevin

      If you arrive in San Jose early (before 1) take a taxi from the airport (Juan santamaría) to la estación 7-10 where they have a bus at 2 on weekdays usually which takes you all the way to Santa Teresa (6500 colones). I recommend changing all your dollars to colones because the exchange leaves you on the winning side since the dollar to colon exchange is $1=530+ colones whereas if you were to pay in dollars they round it to 500 but make sure the hostel you want takes dollars too so you can pay that in dollars which is way more comfy. After that everything is a cheap taxi that shouldn't cost you more than 5000 colones to where you're staying. The way to go in Santa Teresa is definitely a quad which you can rent there. After a year of living in playa hermosa the cheapest I could get a quad for is $30 per day which is honestly incredible pricing. Hope this helped and watch out when you bring the quad to a beach because you can get fined!

    Just spent all of last month in Costa Rica. Spent about a week in Santa Teresa. Super fun waves, tho the entire country seems just as expensive and the lineups are as crowded as staying home in Los Angeles. It is for sure more girlfriend friendly, probably won't go back to surf there.

The whole area is great with awesome waves, friendly people, and great food. The soda you mentioned is by far the best in town! Check out Don Jon's for a place to stay right across from the beach access. B&B Hotel is right next door with good rooms as well. Beware of the suicide showers :) Pura Viida amigos!!!

    ....not bad man. It can be a pretty fickle place to surf in the rainy season, as exposed as we are down here, the sand migrates away from the majority of the beach breaks and as sand bars change, from Carmen/Banana all the way up to La Lora, the options become a bit more limited (and tricky). At this point in time in the year your pretty much surfing La Lora until the sand comes back. La Lora/Suck Rock can handle some fairly serious swell... and there's also 3 point breaks in town that co-operate with the heavy south swells..... Or your piling into a car to hit up one of the many options going off down in the OSA. So many hidden secrets.... and thanks for shouting out Product C, BEST family and food in town.... Puddle Jumper and V3 Round it country :)

    • @SurfboardShredShow
      @SurfboardShredShow  9 лет назад +1

      lostinactionable Thanks for sharing so much insight. About Product C - those guys have been very helpful pointing me to waves when the sandbars haven't worked, even though they didn't know me from the next guy... Wouldn't mind if they opened a location in California... Maybe put in a word with the family? Haha. Cheers.

    Spent a week at Salsa Brava and Cocles on the Caribbean side of CR. Amazing time, killer food and waves for days. Less tourists there and rode waist to head high waves in 80º water with no more than 5 people in the lineup at any given time. And raced horses on the beach with my surfing and horse-galloping gal. If you're heading here, bring a few bars of extra wax for some local friends you'll end up making-apparently it's tough to get and even the 2 shops in Puerto Viejo had none. Killer show, solid video. Pura vida.

    I love this type of review. Gives a ton of insight, not usually absorbed via forum reviews or resort websites. Pre 2 year old toddler, I would travel extensively to baja and would not take my wife. Lately, I just cruze N. baja for a quicky, or I just hope to surf during vacations. Like this past vacay we went to hawaii and I ensured it was around the winter swells and we stay on the north shore of Oahu and Kauai. I am waiting for my critter to be about 4-5, or all my future critters to be the youngest of 4-5 then take a full blown family, surf vacay to costa rica. I doubt the boss would agree with me taking off and leaving them behind, since she likes adventures too.

    Spent a month down in Costa Rica driving around with my wife now (got engaged in Costa on that trip). We loved Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. She doesn't surf but we were able to find some fairly secluded beaches so she could lay out and read while I surfed. Also, the food there was pretty good. I don't remember the name of it but there is a pretty good little pizza joint in the middle of town. We ate there a couple time. I think we ended up staying there for 4 or 5 days. We spent the month bouncing around and our 3 favorite spots were Santa Teresa, Pavones and Puerto Viejo Limon. Limon was awesome to go with a non surfing girl friend or wife. The town is a lot of fun and food is amazing! Surf wasn't even very good when we were there and I'd go back in a heart beat.

    Awesome vid! Costa Rica was on my surfing destination list but now it made to the.top thx! :-). This destination looks couple friendly but is it also family friendly? Got 2 young girls that would love to play with the monkeys ;-)

      +FrenchSurferLostInCA Yes, CR is family friendly in general. It's the most developed of the Central American countries in my opinion, and one that I would consider bringing my two young girls along on. I should say, when they are in middle school or older, I fully intend to use CR as their gateway to adventure travel and latin american culture.
