I saw this when it first aired. I was 10 years old . I’ve always remembered the dancing that went with the song but haven’t seen it since until tonight. God! I love RUclips. LOL!!!!!
This song is a little older than me, but I could see myself lying across my bed playing this on a 45 as the summer breeze blows through my window. Music has been a part of my life ever since I could remember! I can’t imagine my life without music!
...Wonderful, 'dark' performance Helen does here, on "The Carol Burnett Show"...GENIUS idea, having Helen in a tight close-up, singing the lyrics, while performers 'dance' the images, in the background.....It gives the Song a more visual aspect, in which brings out it's mystical, sinister side(s) within the lyrics.... (cont.) ....LOVE Helen pursing her lips, at 3:20, after the, '...well, maybe...' line...It's like she knows something WE don't knowwwww....
A terrific song. incredibly this was Helen's only UK Top 40 hit, reaching No5 in 1975. One of the greatest female singers of any decade, she has left us a fabulous back catalogue of iconic recordings.
Like many people mentioned, I saw the original airing on the Carol Burnette show and boy did this song and visuals stick with me. Glad someone posted it here so I could relive the moment. The story creeped me out as a kid, but still I loved it. Almost like a mini horror movie.
This is where I first heard this song. I'm a huge fan of the Carol Burnett Show, and this was on one of the DVD's I bought (unfortunately, I couldn't tell you which one, sorry), and this song instantly struck a chord with me (I love those 70's story songs). I love how they did this here, instead of having Ms. Reddy just stand and sing, they superimposed a visual that helps tell the story, and it really helps sell the song.
I would like to think that Angie Baby Was the inspiration for Carrie. You see both the song Angie Baby And the story of Cary both came out in the year 1974. In the song, it states that Angie has some sort of power, well this is basically the same thing true about Carrie. Carrie had telekinetic powers. Also, it was once said that they could’ve used Angie Baby As one of the songs in the Soundtrack to the 1976 film Carrie. I think that would’ve been really cool. Unfortunately, there were only two vocal songs in the soundtrack to CARRIE and they were both some by Amy Irving sister Katie, and the rest of the score was done by Pino Donaggio.
This sounds like it would be a perfect plot for a horror movie about a strange girl and a bewitched radio. I think this would be the full plot. Even though it's a reference to the second verse, the first scene would probably be Angie in her room, listening to her radio, and dancing with someone. Then they would show her daddy outside her room tapping on her door, entering the room, and asking if she's alright, and telling her to go to bed. But he, and Angie would be the only people in the room. The person she was dancing with would be gone. (And you might hear a little scary music, which would make you a little suspicious that something weird was going on.) Lovers appear in your room each night And they whirl you across the floor But they always seem to fade away When your daddy taps on your door Angie girl, are you alright? Tell the radio goodnight All alone once more, Angie baby The next scene would be a reference to the first verse. (Angie's parents talking about how she can't go to school, and make friends.) You live your life in the songs you hear On the rock n' roll radio And when a young girl doesn't have any friends That's a really nice place to go Folks hoping you'd turn out cool But they had to take you out of school You're a little touched, you know, Angie baby The next scene would be about the evil boy entering the room, intending to hurt Angie. Stopping at her house is a neighbor boy With evil on his mind 'Cause he's been peeking in Angie's room At the night through her window blind I see your folks have gone away Would you dance with me today? I'll show you how to have a good time, Angie baby Then they would show the radio with a strange glow, and then the boy would suddenly become a victim of the radio. (You would think he was the first victim. And that's when you would know it's a horror movie.) When he walks in her room he feels confused Like he walked into a play And the music's so loud it spins him around 'Til his soul has lost its way And as she turns the volume down He's getting smaller with the sound It seems to pull him off the ground Toward the radio he's bound Never to be found disappearance, and wondering what happened to him, not knowing about the radio, and what it did. The headlines read that a boy disappeared And everyone thinks he died After that, more and more people would enter Angie's room, and become victims of the radio. (And, like I said, somehow, everyone except for her family would become victims.) Then eventually her daddy would see someone enter Angie's room. Then he would enter the room, just in time to witness the person becoming a victim. (I could be wrong, but I think this would happen more than once, because he would eventually know the radio was what caused the people's disappearances, and he would warn people not to enter Angie's room. He would tell them that she's crazy. ("It's so nice to be insane") He would tell them, that she has a radio, and that she somehow gave it the power to cause people to disappear. I don't know what would happen after he warned everyone, but the movie would end with him somehow destroying the radio, and everything would be the way it was before Angie got the radio. (a happy ending of a horror movie)
@@jeffaxelrod882 I'm not just referring to pop stars. I'm referring to everyone who was lured into her room. But if it was every pop star, we wouldn't hear about Justin Bieber anymore. I watched this Carol Burnett episode on tv in real time, I was, and still am, infatuated with Ms. Reddy!!! It’s odd how we grieve for people we admire

I loved this song since a child. Helen is beautiful here.
I remember seeing this video on the Carol Burnette show when it aired back around December of 1974. This is the first time I have seen it since.
Wasn’t it the best -we watched it as a family every Saturday night.
Either November 9th or 16th (both show were taped at the same time)
It hit #1 by the end of the year.

Great singer, great song (that keyboard-wow) and great choreography!
Helen Reddy forever
I love the accompanying visuals. Angie baby.
Absolutely a beautiful woman and a magical voice. God Bless Her. She made her mark.
What a pure delight... I've heard this song 1 million time and each time is like the first. Thank you Helen!
I agree!!! She’s a delight to watch and listen to!
This is sad , but beautiful song by The Late Hellen Reddy.

I do too!
Wow, I've been looking for this version for quite awhile. I was 6 when this aired and it made a lasting impression on me. Wonderful to see it again!
I remembered this also with the dancers up in the corner of the picture.
Me too!!!!! This performance is what made me fall in love with this song. Every time I hear it, I think about this performance.
@@design17 Like the original poster said, this made a lasting impression on me. I couldn't recall the title but I remembered these dancers.
A very pretty lady and a great singer. She will be missed. R.I.P Helen Reddy
This is a great song sung in Helen Reddy's very distinctive style!
I also remember seeing this as a kid. Loved Helen Reddy after that.
Such a great song, love it!
Saw this the FIRST time it aired and it really creeped me out then!

Best video version by far.
Check out this song with 31 minutes left in the new movie “I am Woman.” They added a sensational horn section and arrangement, and Wow!!!
One of the creepiest songs that I have ever heard - that animation too. People were known to run to the radio to change the dial. RIP Helen Reddy
Legendary.

Helen Reddy was great! That music segment they did there was one of their best of the guest singers.
I remember watching this as a kid. Tripped out my brother and I. Ha. Thanks for posting!
Lovely lady with a delightful style. Thanks for the memories Helen. May you rest in peace.
Thank you Helen 💐

Just learned. My Albums her first 4.
Thank you for the best Songs to sing along with the Radio. 🌹❤
One of the first music videos! Someone please explain to me what happened to the neighbor.
The song is supposed to be surreal. The implication is that Angie really used her powers to trap the neighbor in the radio.

Great singing and a beautiful lady! God bless dear Helen Reddy. I wish you could come back and I’ll play piano accompanist for you

Most of them did.
To sing live means you have to pay a fee to ASCAP and perhaps to the record label. Maybe it was too expensive?
All guests did on the CB show. Big deal - Helen Reddy could sing live with the best of them - she was NOT a studio creation.
