Fascinating man, took his fathers dream and turned it into a global empire. Brits don't value their own when it comes to success. Everything discussed (here I incorporate Harry's Farm) not only makes sense but IMO is essential for the world to move forward. Heavy machinery (shipping, aviation, construction etc) will never function satisfactorily on battery power.

I've really enjoyed the series of videos Harry's done with JCB - it's good to see someone invested in, and succeeding in developing, alternative directions. As a designer myself, I fully agree that EVs are at a mid-point and a long way from where they will end up. I also agree that it is frustrating to be hampering the development of internal combustion engines and hybrids at a point where we are still so unsure about future developments on fuel. Setting a tax on carbon and letting designers work out the best way to achieve low outputs would be a far more effective route than governments pre-judging and selecting outcomes. It's interesting to hear Lord Bamford's views as, even from advanced years, he clearly has good handle on product development and usability.

I don’t know about this interview. Unlike others here I have nothing against Mr Bamford. But Harry is asking him all these car industry questions, and he’s not giving very informative answers. He just seems out of touch. I see this quite often, people interview these very successful and wealthy people expecting them to have all the answers, but they often don’t have much of a clue either. Success and wealth doesn’t necessarily make for a very wise man.

Just quietly, most automotive manufacturers would agree with Lord Bamford's comments about the direction they should take. Setting fixed targets and prioritising one energy source over all others, especially when batteries have some critical limitations, puts ideology above practicality. EV is just another alternative and the focus should be on energy efficiency and emission control, by whatever means.

Harry - Thanks for bringing us this episode. I’m pleased to learn that someone is pushing hydrogen engines in heavy equipment, this in IMHO where the push should be. We should be pushing hydrogen engines for transport vehicles, farming equipment, and public transport. Most transport trucks follow a specified transportation corridor which would make planning for hydrogen re-fueling relatively straight forward. As for EV’s I don’t think Lord Bamford has it right, the battery technology today will outlast the useful life of the car, that has already been proven. As for range anxiety, I get it for long distance driving that might be a concern however the vast majority of driving on a daily basis hardly consumes the battery. Additionally long range batteries are now on market, so what if you have to stop every two hours for a re-charge, might actually be good for public safety in forcing people to take a break from behind the wheel.
One last thing, those who cover the automobile market and especially EV’s never talk about what is now being done with used EV batteries. EV batteries are designed or a certain power band required for a vehicle. However when they no longer deliver that power band, they still have considerable useful life. They can now be utilized for battery storage. Here is an example of one such company that is doing this now. In fact there is a stadium in the Netherlands that is powered by this technology. I would encourage you to investigate it and even share it with your viewers.

Have to disagree with your comments about long distance driving and EVs. I recently had to drive from Malaga to Barcelona which is some 1000kms in one day and had to do the return journey the next day. For what I needed to do the train or plane was not an option and I am so glad I did not have an EV. I made three stops of around 10 to 15 minutes each and I was on my way. No need to stop when the car needed to stop and no need to go find a charger way of course from where I was. 10 to 15 minutes was enough to get some fuel, toilet break and get some coffee, in an EV it would added hours and hours to what was already a very long trip!

Good video. I like the follow up on the JCB hydrogen videos a while back. It seems a sensible way to go for heavy machinery.
I don't get the hate in the comments - on this occasion or the new-Jaguar video. Harry looks at the thing at hand and it makes for sensible discussion. Commendable, I think.

    Dear Mr Metcalfe
I love most of your videos (especially the ones about classic cars) but I am never going to watch anything with an arch Brexshitter in it as he has helped to cause so much damage to the country in which I have to live.
    Yours sincerely etc.

Every penny of tax avoided is a penny that the government cannot spend on ruining Britain. The real reason you do not have a car collection is because you are a loser who wants the government to steal other people's money that you cannot get yourself. Envy is a sin, address your wrongdoings.

Sorry Harry, I normally look forward to your videos but this one wasn't for me and I had to turn off after a few minutes. Maybe see if GBNews want to buy this piece - it would suit their Brexit loving, forelock tugging viewer pool. Misjudged

We absolutely need people like Lord Bamford in the UK, to create and run companies like JCB, that create jobs and wealth in this country. He is an absolute hero for the UK. It has nothing at all to do with Brexit. JCB were manufacturing and exporting products to the whole world before and after Brexit. You seem to just hate a British success story, such as JCB.

    • @andyevans2000

We absolutely don't need people who avoid paying tax and who use their wealth to damage this country in order to make even more money. Not sure why anyone would disagree with that statement to be honest.
