When British pop music was completely innovative and sublime. This here is a strong female and what role models for woman and people in general were and still are. Musicality at it's best, creativity, ideas and pushing boundaries. That died in pop music many decades ago. Please give me a time machine to the Early 80s so I can stay there forever.
It's hard to explain why this was all so innovative, magical, peculiar and revolutionary at the time, both musically and visually. If you wish you'd grown in the 80s, you're absolutely right.
@@111usulHave to disagree. It wasn’t Bowie who called Giorgio Moroder’s work with Donna Summer the “future of music”, it was Brian Eno (who said it to Bowie). But while Moroder’s early experimentation was indeed groundbreaking, Eurythmics created a sound unto their own, with one of the first examples of the Movement Systems Drum Computer and the extraordinary combination of Stewart’s gracefully minimalist utilization of the most iconic synths of all time-Junos, Jupiters, early FM synthesis combined with Lennox’s daring androgyny (for its time) and celestial voice. The late seventies and early eighties were arguably the most fertile years in the history of rock music, and dozens of new genres launched during that time, primarily led by the second British Invasion. But if you want to get truly technical about the origins of this sound, start with Devo, Gary Numan, the Cars, and the B-52’s!
Moreso musically. There were other acts who had used visual presentation like this (androgyny, unusual make-up & outfits, theatrical performances) before Eurythmics.
@@kevinlakeman5043 It helped that Lennox (and arguably more so Stewart) were both extraordinary composers and musicians, and their choice of gear and synth programming created an unbelievably effective mix of cold, robotic music overlayed with powerful, strong and warm vocals. It was about dualities-hard and soft, warm and cold, modern and vintage, loud and quiet. They abandoned this after “Touch” and sort of lost me for a couple of albums, but they returned to it brilliantly on “Beethoven (I Love to Listen to)” from “Savage”. Yazoo did something similar, with Alyson Moyet’s jazz background and delivery over Vince Clarke’s innocent synthpop, but without as much sophistication or emphasis (although I adored their two albums)! One of the reasons I’ve never warmed up to Lennox’s solo output was due to the lack of these paradoxes-she lost the suspense of having contrast with her style in the music and went full-on torch singer. It wasn’t nearly as haunting and innovative as her groundbreaking work during early Eurythmics. Interestingly if you listen to the Tourists or Eurythmics’ first album “In the Garden”, it was ALL cold synthesis and zero warmth, and Lennox’s voice was buried in the mix. It just didn’t work. It’s shocking to listen to “Sweet Dreams” and hear how much they pushed her voice so far to the forefront-it created an intimacy and immediacy with her that showed what a true star she was. It was at this time that she adopted her androgynous persona, adding further contrast and duality in their videos, with her playing with these dual archetypes-boardroom masculinity against high glamour in a taxi for the first two records, then vixen vs drab housewife for “Beethoven”. This kind of stuff was still shocking and avant- garde for the eighties, and I just loved it. Male androgyny made new appearances at the time too, with the personas of Boy George, Pete Burns and Nick Rhodes going way over the top compared to glam-era Bowie. And my generation went nuts for it! It’s why I maintain that despite the crushing conformity of the Reagan era, music was smashing all sorts of boundaries and taboos, and it was awesome seeing it sell like hotcakes. What a gift it was to witness that as a teenager!

It's savage and it's cruel And it shines like destruction Comes in like the flood And it seems like religion It's noble and it's brutal It distorts and deranges And it wrenches you up And you're left like a zombie
Really never realized how good they were at the time …. All the emphasis was on Madonna which was foolish. Annie Lennox is one of the wonders of the 80’s rock world, if not of all time.
Annie is scary. She’s great. So beautiful. Her voice is so unique. So soulful. So dark. Dave is odd. Weirdo. Mad. Scientist. Architect. Funny. Maestro. It’s that audience. Are they German? 🍻😂

spellbinding.. Annie you are unreal.. my favourite singer ever..
Timeless classic from the 1980's!!! Awesome!

No one could ever play the axe as well as Dave ❤❤ There is no end to his and Annie’s talents.
Cutting edge.😉
Early dance music. I love it!

but it's kind of bowie thing over donna summer beat, 70s were true innovation, this is just polishing, still awesome song though, annie is superb

Thanks For Sharing My Fave Eurythmics Song! Fantastic!
Amazing performance and one of their best singles!
It's savage and it's cruel
And it shines like destruction
Comes in like the flood
And it seems like religion
It's noble and it's brutal
It distorts and deranges
And it wrenches you up
And you're left like a zombie
❤ I love this visual song artistry.
