Hi, thanks for your reply! In the end of the video you say, that it's not recommended to change the resolution of the screen to another resolution that it's native one. So is it fair to say, that OS scaling at full resolution produces a better image than changing the resolution of the monitor (which should also do some sort of scaling, but maybe not as good)?

    • @Nicolas11x12English
      @Nicolas11x12English  3 года назад +2

@@tsakuyo Yes, changing the screen resolution anything lower than native is not recommended. However, OS scaling has come a long way and keeps the screen resolution at native settings while increasing text, icon sizes, etc. The sharpness remains. I would now recommend using scaling. It's really good now within Windows.

Thanks, that helped a lot. I still ordered three monitors now (25" 1440p, 27" 1440p and 27" UHD) to compare them in the real world and find out which one works best for me. One thing I didn't consider before (which also show in your video) is that if the image is being scaled to an uneven factor (1.5 in this case) the image would need to be spread to an uneven number of pixels and therefore some lines appear to be unevenly thick. 1px of original width would have to be spread to 1.5px and sometimes it's going to end up on 1px and sometimes it's going to end up on 2 px, I assume. However, I'm not sure if it's noticeable in the real world, but that's why I ordered the screens now to find out.

ProTip: GPU's have significantly better quality hardware scaling than most any integrated chips on monitors. Use GPU scaling if you plan on using any resolutions other than the native of the display and the overall readability of text and sharpness of images will be significantly better. GPU scaling used to be a shit show like 10 years ago but it's no longer an issue.

Excellent comparison, I really did not find something better on youtube, especially for the comparison that shows at minute 3:20, you can see the superiority of having a higher resolution in the same number of inches, this pushed me to want a sharpness of That quality, I am a developer and I spend a large part of the day reading and writing code (letters), that is why the sharpness of the text is extremely important to me, for example, the sharpness of Apple screens is impressive, I found out and understood that It is because of the high ppi of its screens, all greater than 215 ppi, so if I wanted sharpness, I would have to look for a monitor with that pixel density, and a QHD(1440p) in 27 inches only offers 108 ppi, if I raise the resolution At 4k I get 163 ppi, a good thing but not as much as when you go up to 5k and you get 218 ppi, that amount of ppi makes the text brutally sharp and that's great for those who read and write most of the day in front of a monitor.
I hope this great comment helps other passionate programmers, editors, or readers to choose a monitor correctly.
PS: I currently use the LG Ultrafine 5k, and I use it with my Macbook Pro and a Dell G5.

question should be, at 2160p, if we scale at 150% in windows, it's the text and apps that scale which make it seem like 1440p and thus usable. however, images do not so at 4k with scaling in windows you have sharper images vs the same image in 1440p monitor. this is for windows only as mac osx scales everything you see, not just gui and text. the mac osx scaling does it a lot better as windows scaling only scales certain things and not pictures and movies as a whole properly.

Windows 10 is the problem, not the monitors.
Metro apps look amazing on a 4k monitor with scaling. The problem is with old desktop applications, including the latest Office 365, which I use a lot. Menu writing blends into each other, some of the buttons are miniscule and copy and pasting images or screen prints between apps produces random sizes. You can fix it by going back to the standard 1920 x 1080 resolution which seems to be what Windows 10 is designed for, but then everything looks distorted, like an SD picture on an HD TV.

You could use 1440p on a 4K monitor using 1:1 pixel aspect ratio without losing any sharpness. The downside however is that your screen size shrinks, so if you're using a 27" 4K monitor, it would be as if you were using an 18" inch 1440p monitor. But you could also run other resolutions, like 1800p, which would look like a 22.5" monitor on your 27". Or 1600p, which would look like 20". Or you could simply lower your graphics settings. The highest setting is usually overkill in most games. You don't need annoying effects like blur for instance.

using 4k 32 inch for 2 years now, difference between 2k is negligible if you are nitpicking. Well you might notice the slight difference, but it wouldn't matter that much after sometime. 4k monitor 175% scaling = 2k 125% scaling. They will look almost the same on a 32 inch

Thank you for this video! All the other 1440p vs 4K monitor comparison videos just focus on games. I was looking for a higher than 1080p resolution monitor for coding and couldn’t find a good video. I originally got a 32” 1440p monitor but it wasn’t sharp enough. Then I got a 27” 4K monitor and the text way too small at native and even at 125% scaling but I leave it at that because with 150% scaling I lose a major reason of getting a higher res monitor.
I think 1440p at 27” and 4K at 32” or more is the best combinations.

    • @DigitalHalftones

This is just my opinion but 4k vs 1440p on a 27" monitor is negligible. You barely notice the difference and you will have to upscale to read stuff like he mentions in the video which basically makes it look like a 1440p monitor at the cost of additional GPU rendering (ie lower frame rates in game). 1440p is best on a 27" monitor while 4k is better on a 32-34" monitor imo.
Definitely go for 144hz over 60hz for gaming. There is a big difference there, more so than going from 1440p to 4k in my opinion.

The formula should be real simple --> If you can read (comfortably, not fooling yourself) text on your screen in his NATIVE resolution, then, this is a right size monitor for this kind of display! And if you need to do some shenanigans for adjusting text size, then this sucks and you would be better off with lover resolustion of pixels on particular inches size of the monitor.

Thank you surprisingly well done video , you did point out most of the things really well. For a 27" monitor the best resolution to go for is surely 2k. There will be also no difference seen if someones looks at both screens from an regular distance only when moving really close you can see the difference.
And the scaling issues that comes with 4K monitor in this size can be also really bad depending on the program that is used. Else everything will be so small that it is not readable like you mentioned.
There are clear reasons why Eizo still produces 2k Monitors for professional in art related fields like the CG27X.
If someone wants or needs the 4k there are probably no other option then to go with a 32inch one.

My monitor is a Samsung U32H750. It's 32". At 1440p, games look at least as good as they would on a 32" screen with a native resolution of 1440p. I don't notice any blurriness, but younger, sharper eyes might. 1440p at 32" is only 92 pixel per inch, after all. The monitor does a great job a scaling 1440p and 1080p up, though, so perhaps it's a little sharper that a native 1440p would be, due to all the extra pixels.

Thanks for the very good review.
I'm an amateur photographer, mostly stills, also in the process of choosing a monitor, the 27" looks like the optimum size.
My main question, can someone really see difference in sharpness 2K vs 4K on 27" monitor? Neither gaming nor video editing use.
Personally I have no practical way to do this comparing.
If not for gaming do I need special GPU to get the 4K resolution? Suggestions?

I do have a 4k 27 inch monitor and I have to say that with programs like GIMP the scaling does not work pretty well, the icons and text are very small. Whereas photoshop scales pretty well on the monitor. Yes you will notice a difference in 2k and 4k if you are close to the screen, but the difference is not very huge. Problem with 4k on 27 inch is that it makes text and icons kinda small, most people will tell you that for 4k you shouldn't go below 32 inches. And apparently the perfect inch for 2k is 27 inch.
Yes you will need a graphic card that is capable of resolute in 4k, but this also work with cheaper graphic card, no need to buy an expensive one, for photoshop your rather want a good cpu than gpu if you don't want to have long loading times during photo editing.

@@manuelavendano3891 Hey, if you are coding a lot I personally would find 4k on a 27inch a bit too small. 4k on a 27 inch makes everything very small, so for coding the codes will appear very tiny. But you can always scale in windows to make everything bigger on the screen. On the other hand on a 4k screen you will have much more space for more open more windows than you will have on a 2k or 1080p, so you can open more windows. If you don't do gaming at all you won't need more than 60hz. I would say if you have a good eyesight then 4k 27 inch will still be fine.
But the question is if you really need 4k for coding and educational videos? I mean 4k is nice if you watch 4k videos, or do any graphic design stuff or like playing games in high resolution. Since you only use it for coding and educational videos I would say that 2k (1444p) monitor which are cheaper than the 4k monitors should be enough for your purpose.

Ultimately the best thing is to find out what your viewing distance will be, check out the various distance to resolution calculators out there, and get that. Resolutions higher then that will just burden your computer. Scaling down is just a waste of a higher resolution screen. Don't underestimate how good 1080p is. So I were to get a 27", I'd probably want a 1440p, but I think I would take a 1080p over a 4K. But it does depend on what you want to do with it. Hi Nocolas, thanks for the video. I am trying to decide between a 27 " 4k or 1440 monitor. Some advantage for 1440 seems to be the 144 Hz refresh date. I have very bad vision. I am not sure I will apreciate 144 Hz. So in conclusion, what do you recommend or prefer. 4k or 1440? Thanks for your help.

      I would stick with 1440p

4k would just be to small on a 27inch screen

If you have a very bad vision, then I would go with the 1440p. The problem with 4k is that it will make text and icons very small on your screen which can be hard to read.

Right so I am getting a 27" screen and am conflicted because I intend to use it for a lot of Photoshop, Illustrator type of work but not exclusively - it's also my screen for day-to-day web browsing and such... Not sure at the moment

For creative uses, 4k would suit you better.

4:53 Is lowering a native 4k monitor down to 1440p still cause an issue of blurriness, or has this been fixed (considering your video is 6 years old now).

I've had 4K for 3 years now and never had a problem with scaling really.

No blur when playing at 2k?

    • @BalubishTech
      @BalubishTech 5 лет назад

@@nathanrrr9939 Yeah some and that is thanks to Anti-Alaisning. Thats why going up in res makes you be able to lower AA. Rule i go by to have no edges is 1080p 8xAA or 4xAA to smoothen put edges but makes the picture blurry compared to native 4K. 1440p 4xAA or 2xAA. Less blurry. And 4K FXAA or 2xAA. For example in a new game like shadow of Tomb raider the hair look good with TAA but not even with SMAAx4 at 4K. It doesnt look bad but you get some pixelation refraction effect even är 4K. Only thing in that game is using TAA if it bothers you and it does for me. But the dream is 8K monitors then you dont need any AA at all. I tested a few games like Grand Theft Auto 5 with no AA and 8K on my 4K screen and there was super smooth edges. But the hardware to run some games at 8K doesnt exist yet unless its older games. But playing 1440p with some AA on a 4K screen is fine. I had to do it in several games when i had GTX 1080 anyways. The Main difference you lose at 1440p on a 4K screen is some clarity on close things but mainly the distant view. What you gain on native 4K is better depth clarity thanks to more pixels but certainly looks really smooth with some AA at 1440p on a 4K screen no doubt.

How does it go from 1440 p monitors and than all the way up to 2160p. How is there no 1600 or 1800 monitors

If you get a 4k TV 1080p looks just as sharp as 4k. 1440p doesn't look sharp however. Down side of 4k TV is it's too big for computers. Low refresh rates and response times.

okay so 27 inch 4k monitor needs scaling to read text comfortably like 1440p Monitor. But what about 34 inches and above 4k monitors that are available today? Are they big enough to not need scaling?

I would say on a 32 inch 4k you will be fine.
