Oh my goodness! This is just what I needed. This recipe combined with your soothing accent and the lovely scenery calmed me right down. Thank you for making my day a little better. Greetings from Switzerland!
This is a must try recipe. And seeing the snippets of Arran reminded me that I used to play a tune on the pipes, aptly named Arran Hills. It was composed around 50 or so years ago by a chap named Scotty Wilson, who lived out his latter years in Western Australia. He was a very good keyboard player as well as a composer.
A Scottish butcher here in Perth Australia has now added macaroni pies to his Cafe menu. I never knew of these until just recently. They Seem to be making a comeback. Thanks for the recipe Cheryl. I followed your scotch pie recipe. Just tasted wicked . Xxx
I love your recipes. I lived in Aberdeen for so many years and ate so many types of pies that brings wonderful memories to see this recipe and others you have published. Thank you. I am from Venezuela living in Texas. Gracias!!! Cheers!!!
You have nailed it, fantastic. I regularly make meat pies but this morning I’m on the Mac Cheese ones. Just recently returned from a month in Angus, it’s SO good to look in the shops and see the vast array of pies for sale. You have a great channel, well done, cheers Mike🍷🥃👍
I can't believe I never heard of these, being from Tyneside and almost an honorary Scot! But we did leave for Canada in 1967, maybe it was after our time? I do love hot water pastry, and you made it look so easy. We did always have the pork pies, happy to say. 😊
Cheryl, thanks for showing us how to make this pie, which I had never heard of before. I laughed out loud when you said you were glad the recipe did not call for puff pastry, since if you start making that when you're 32 you don't finish till you're 35. Isn't that the truth! I made puff pastry ONE TIME in my life, and that was ENOUGH. My mum, a Liverpudlian, supervised me when I was about 15 years old one wintry day in northeast Ohio, and decided I wanted to make it. She told me it was a hell of a lot of work and I, in my infinite teenager wisdom, scoffed. Well, that was that - she was going to have me make it, and learn exactly what was involved, which took the whole damn day! NEVER AGAAAAAAAAAAAIN do I want to make puff pastry! (Miss you, Mum, and thanks for helping me with so much in life, including devoting your own Saturday to helping your sassy kid learn to make puff pastry. 1934 - 1998. xxxooo)
Love this macaroni pies are my absolute favourite I just buy the Bells one though . I need to step up my game and try to make this . Thanks for sharing x
Oh delicious. I would love to see you do Scotch pies. My father used to say that when he was a butcher's boy in 1940s Edinburgh he would put his thumb in the bottom of pies and remove some of the meat before delivering them!
@Rosie O Hi, Rosie. Out of curiosity, what are your categories for your saved videos? I have a buhzillion saved vids but can never seem to find what I am looking for! Maddening! :-)
Another easy way of removing the excess pastry off the top is to use a rolling pin. I love adding English mustard to a cheese sauce as it helps to bring out more of the cheese flavour. These pies look amazing x
It’s almost 10.30 pm and I’m in the mood for making this 😂😂 still solves the problem of what’s for tea tomorrow 💕 have a lovely Friday from my hubby and family in Cosham Hampshire 🥰
You are the best! My mouth was watering watching you make these! And I love that you’re not a baker like me. I can actually make all your dishes! Plus you have a great sense of humor! I started making puff pastry when I was 30 and 28 years later I’m still making it 😂🤣😂
Oh my so yummy looking! Mac and cheese is so easy but I’ve never thought of putting it in a pie. YUM! Ill try this! Your kitty is gorgeous. Is that Jasper? I love your video of your beautiful island home. ❤️ from USA
I am so thankful I've stumbled across your channel. I live in the US. My mom's mom's dad's parents came over from Scotland and Ireland. These recipes gives me a sense of partially knowing some of my culinary heritage. My husband also has a wee bit of Scottish in him too.
No, we don't have them ready to eat, but they look easy enough to make. I just made beef stew and fresh crusty bread to go with it and this looks like a breeze in comparison 🙃
If you learn how to make the crust for these pies you can put anything in them for a portable snack. I’ve seen BBQ pulled pork, Lasagna, Steak and Plack pudding, Chicken curry all in this pies form 😂
I’ve never had macaroni cheese pies, they look delicious! When you said how long it takes to make puff pastry, reminded me of Sarah Kennedy’s joke about sprouts for Christmas dinner...it used to be that the sprouts were put on a low heat to simmer, in October 😂🤣
OMG! I had my first macaroni pie from Leith's Pie Shop in Dundee, many years ago, when I was a tourist. We went back every day! And now I can make my own, thank you :o)
Well ive never tasted a macaroni pie in my life, but that's about to change now these looked so good and dead easy to make. I can't believe how easy that pie shell was to make. Yummy yummy. X
Your hilarious, puff pastry is labor-intensive though. What a great crust, lard probably gives it better flavor than the Crisco we have in the States. Looks so delicious. Have a great weekend Cheryl.
All my favourite things in one, they look amazing, never had the pie version, but they look delicious, I'm so pleased you will be doing Scotch pies, as I love them, they seem to have gone extinct around here where I live, Went to Morrisons the other day, looked in the bakery section, and spotted two Scotch pies for £1.60 so I bought them and enjoyed Cheryl, :-)
Omg I just saw this notification! One of my most fave things. I wish I could go home and buy this. I don’t think I could make it.... yummy yum. Ok - am off to watch hehe 😉 xxx
We were able to get Scotch pies , a definite favourite from Morrison’s in East Anglia a few years ago but then they disappeared. Now on holiday in the highlands and I have enjoyed a few from the butchers. It certainly will be handy if you can do them as your macaroni cheese pies turned out very well. Thank you and will wait with anticipation for your video
It’s near midnight, I need to sleep, but I’d sell a kidney for one of these beauties right now😍🤤😂 I’m def making this! I may have to improvise the cute pie tins but I ^will^ accomplish this!👍🏻
First time to your channel. These pies look great and I will definitely be making them as soon as I get the wee tins. I will be making the pastry with gluten free flour but I think it should work quite well.
Hot water pastry is just so simple and quick to make. Life's too short to make puff and shortcrust pastry. I just buy the shop stuff. I'll definitely make some macaroni pies soon.
Cheryl, I was always told that hot water pastry was a black art, one for professional bakers. Looks like you've exposed *that* as a myth. That looked completely do-able. 👍😁👌 Years ago, I had a supplier who would send me Scotch pie shells. They were great (not expensive either) but had a nasty habit of arriving 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒏. I think I'll be giving these a go. I'll need to get some Cookeen though, as the wife never uses the stuff. An old favourite of mine was Chilli con Carne pies, made with the pre-bought shells; these can go back on the menu now, Thank you.😁 Cheers for now, Dougie.
Hi Cheryl, I have literally never heard of this, WHY???? It looks fab, all my favourite stuff, pastry, pasta and cheese. I also never realised that hot water pastry was so easy (at least you made it look easily), I am going to experiment with a gluten free version. My husband misses pork pies like you wouldn't believe so this may be the answer to his issue lol. Thanks for sharing xxxx
Recipe starts at 1:27 :) x
But then I would miss a minute and a half of your delightful accent! I will wait 😁

Its great as a overseas Scot to get this recipe to give us a taste of home out in Australia. Simply explained, no nonsense, truly Scots.
best part of your videos is the soothing sound of your voice and the down to earth recipes
Carb overload! I think I just gained 5 lbs watching this It's not going to stop me from trying it though.

I do love hot water pastry, and you made it look so easy. We did always have the pork pies, happy to say. 😊
I giggled so hard at the description of making puff-pastry! Definitely not on my to-make list, but that hot water crust... oooh. :)
I have to try this recipe. Thank you.😊

Oddly, brought up in England but Mum born and bred in Greenock - never had it in my life!
That looks so good! And thanks for giving all the measurements as you go! I'll use that cheese sauce in all kinds of things.
I’ve never heard of macaroni pies, these look delicious, I’ll definitely be trying this! 😊👍

Amazing must make these for my 91 year old mother
I'm going to make these for my 8 year old daughter. They appeal to people of all ages!

I'm just up the road from you in Waterlooville
@@WhitneyHouston4eva1 I live in the US now but I was born in St. Mary's. Hello :)
Cookeen is vegetable shortening the same as Trex. Great for nice flaky pastry. I use it a lot.
I so miss this pie. The pastry is the best bit of this pie and the scotch pie. Thanks I will be making this soon.

I missed this pie when I lived in Scotland but no one made them as nice as my local bakery. But I’ll try making my own.😋😋
I’m in love with you Cheryl! I made these and they are brilliant! Thanks.
Definitely, definitely going to make Macaroni pies now. Hopefully vegetable shortening will work just as well for the pastry instead of lard 🤞🏻
Yes! Mac&Cheese pies! 😁 The dough looks dead, dead easy. (Lard going on the shopping list.) Thanks for another great recipe, Cheryl!
Love to Jasper! 💙

It's easy to make your own lard.
