After going gluten free, I did 6 months as raw vegan, no grains, with steamed veggies. It was a game changer. Gluten free 5 years now and I handle GF grains just fine.

Good to know. When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease over 15 years ago, the first thing my gastro did was send me to a nutritionist. Before I walked out of her office, in tears mind you, she listed all the new grains I could eat. Then she proceeded to list all the foods that I could no longer eat, which is when the tears arrived. I felt at that point all I could consume was rice and water. I am so happy there is more info out there!

this is so frustrating!! what is left to eat? it seems like we should eat raw vegan except for some (expensive) high quality meat here and there. me and my husband worked hard to go 100% glutenfree&dairyfree for the past 4-6 weeks. and now i get to know that it was all for nothing?? it seems with the foods today you can only do wrong, whatever you do. seriuosly, what is there to eat on the long run?

Awesome video! I can't express how 100% correct on EVERYTHING I have heard you say. I have LG, Fibro, and I am allergic to everything except turkey, cod, haddock and salmon. I cannot eat most vegetables, no legumes, eggs, dairy, sugar, etc It is so refreshing to see a doctor that GETS it. God Bless you for putting these videos out there so people can pay attention and get their lives back. At one point I was completely bed ridden. Please keep the videos coming. They are helping me and others!

I applaud you for making this video!! My DD7 was diagnosed at 18 months with Celiac. The changes in her were noticed within 72 hours and her health improved with each day. Over the years friends have come to me for help with their children (or themselves) regarding gluten free lifestlyes and it is so hard to explain to them why they don't feel better ASAP. I can't wait to share this video with them. I feel blessed for an early diagnosis... DD7 wasn't taking in other grains that young! Thank you!

OMG...my daughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac and crohns. I immediately started the gluten free diet (replaced all gluten grains with gluten free grains), after a week when we did her lab results, her inflammation numbers were doubled. I kept asking the doc why did the numbers increase, they did not give me any answers...but this video is making me think if i the approach i took toward gluten free caused this reaction. It makes a lot of sense...am sending this video to my GI.

I have a stomach problem where I can only eat certain food about once a day and then I became to realize I maybe gluten intolerant, but a lot of gluten free products I can't eat due to my stomach problem. So I have been reduced to eating potatoes and chicken broth. I don't know what to eat, but I'm going to the Dr. this week and hopefully she can send me to a gastro and I can get some help finally. I've had this stomach problem for 23 years and it's a huge burden! I have even become Anorexic due to suffering so bad with my stomach after eating the pettiest foods. It's a nightmare that won't go away. I need help!

Thanks for this video. I have a gluten allergy and was doing really well on my gluten free diet. Then all of a sudden I developed the symptoms again even when I wasn't eating wheat products. Someone pointed out that I had recently added corn to my diet and corn and potatoes can also cause problems for people with celiacs. My RA is at its worst once again and I will definitely stay away from corn as well from now on!

We are vegan, and my husband is celiac for the past 7 years. We have changed our diets completely and eat plenty! Brown rice, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and grains (after 30 days as the Dr explains in this video). I make a great sauce from olives, soft tofu, tomatoes, garlic - blend it and pour over potatoes, veggies, rice or use as a dip for carrots and celery. BTW, we are both so much healthier than 10 years ago. I have gone OFF blood-pressure meds, lost 25 lbs etc

Interesting points - but how do I know what I should eat, or shouldn't? There are no doctors in China (where I am currently residing) who are paying attention to this kind of thing or even care to do so, as far as I can tell having spoken with a few.
You mention potatoes.... but I eat tubers now, so if I stop eating gluten, what else do I have to stop eating now? arggggh... no wonder why it's so hard to get gluten free.... there is so much conflicting info out there and so much advice that isn't really clear..... heeeeelppppp!

100% agree with you! If I would have know this years ago, I would have followed this advise. I cut out all grains recently except for potatoes I tried to follow scd diet but not having enough carbs made not feel well. Just got celiac blood test back which came up positive... Even though i have been ( gluten free for years ) I am thinking the grains caused a reaction like you were saying mimicking the wheat. I went wheat free when I found out about a wheat allergy that I had. I still have really bad stomach issues especially some gerd symtoms. Is it low stomach acid or to much? everyone says something different! thanks for any feed back.

I am Korean have been eating rice for life time and did not usually eat wheat. Although rice is known as gluten-free, after I eat rice, I feel heavy, fatigue and digestion problems. Also now people are getting aware fact that the rice itself is dead-food. What we recommend is to put other grains in your rice cooker such as millet and quinoa. I changed to eat those things and now I feel a lot better. My point is that the rice is not whole grain it lacks of essential nutrients.

So no other grains for 30 days. But really...isn't it just no NEW items for 30 days? If there is leaky gut, and therefore holes in the intestine wall...eating quinoa or rice or whatever IF you were eating it already before, it shouldn't cause any issues now, right? So it's only new items that could turn into sensitivities, it would seem. So should people therefore just avoid eating ANYTHING new to them for 30 days?...

I have a question for anyone who is educated when it comes to type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed almost three years ago and now I am reading studies that say that dietary changes can reverse type 1 diabetes, such as gluten free diets and vitamin D supplementation at a rate of 1,000 IU per day. I also read a study about how injections of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BSG), a tuberculosis vaccine, gave type 1 diabetics the ability to produce small amounts of insulin, which would mean pancreas regeneration. If you, Dr. Clark, or anyone in the comment section for that matter, could give me insight I would be very grateful.

David, This is not a meatatarian diet. You can and should eat all the veggies besides the nightshades. You can have whatever protein source: fish, chicken, beef, turkey etc. You can have low glycemic fruits such as berries of all kinds, pears. plums, apples, oranges, grapefruits, but NOT fruits like mangoes, melons, bananas, pineapple. Hope that helps.

I didn't eat any cereals after learning I had celiac disease. It's only now, 3 months later I started drinking rice milk, and that's just cause it has added calcium and I need that in pregnancy. I'm lactose intolerant as well, so my only source of calcium is broccoli, which I hate. After pregnancy I won't touch cereals at all. I hope I'll be alright.

  • @DrDavidJClarkDC

If it was me, I would be off the rice for 30 days and probably longer because rice is a cross reactor with gluten antibodies. Soon I'll have new videos added to the playlist "Most Dangerous foods for Gluten sensitivity, celiac and gluten free diet."

I have been looking into going organic and came across gluten free articles. I have two sons that are always low on Vit D and I have always been tired unless I get more than ten hours, but now I also ache all the time all over. When I saw the symptoms of being gluten sensitive or celiac disease I was actually happy I may have found a solution. My question is, my sons being Vit D deficient, I found a place that has raw milk from grass fed cows and not corn etc so would you think it may be worth a try? I do realize the reasons behind people not suggesting raw milk because of cows not being fed what they are meant to eat and what it does to the milk plus the way they are raised in feces etc. I am a past Medical Assistant so I do understand some medical terminology, thanks for any advice if your able. Also, I notice your number looks to be around Dallas, I live in Pittsburg Tx close so wondering if you see kids ages 16 to 10?

True. Many people do the best when they don't eat any grains at all. However some folks who are reactive hypoglycemic have REALLY hard time keeping their blood glucose up without some foods that are bit more "carb-y" such as some of the gluten-free grains.
Point is, if you do gluten-free, do it the right way.

Hi, Dr. Clark! I have a question, but the background story is a bit long.
The past year, I've been dealing with stomach pain-- upper and middle stomach pain specifically, and sharp, throbbing pains that would hit me spontaneously on both sides of stomach as well, along with extreme irregularity. The pain got to the point one night that I thought I had a stomach virus, but the pain was still all over, and vanished after an hour. Tests done revealed that there was inflammation at the beginning and end of my small intestine (possibly throughout), but blood tests ruled out Crohn's Disease and Celiac's Disease.
I was told I had IBS, but doing a high-fiber diet like I was told worsened my irregularity and I was still having all-over stomach pain. I decided to try a gluten-free diet a week ago because I was so tired of the pain and discomfort that I was desperate to try anything, and I haven't had any of the aforementioned problems since, as if I had never had a problem the past year.
But your mention of this leaky gut problem worries me. Is it possible that since I feel completely normal again, even with consuming various foods that contain some other grain flour, that I don't have a leaky gut? Or could this just be a sort of temporary bliss stage before another grain intolerance takes effect?

    Great, but wait a moment...
no grains, no potatoes, no rice, no bread.. What CAN we actually eat? You talk about the damage done by having those things, but what about the damage done by the inevitability of having some serious mineral/vitamin deficiencies when theres an insane amount of standard staple foods that you can't touch? Are we just supposed to have a 90% fish/meat diet or something?

Thank you for this video! I already avoid gluten and coffee but I still feel bad. I've heard that the foods which can cause cross-reaction include (except grains): chocolate, eggs, dairy, potato. It's really confusing for me as I don't enjoy eating only vegetables.
That's why I've been wondering if it is safe to ignore minor symptoms and continue eating some of those foods (eg rice and eggs)? Or dairy which doesn't cause any symptoms in my case? Or is it essential to remove all of them from diet for good?

    • @DrDavidJClarkDC

You can view it here: ruclips.net/p/PLnfkLffh9BqAumKE9U2Jg3Vy-4_oJlg92

*sigh* Wish I would have watched this two weeks ago. I've been on the Gluten-Free diet for two weeks and now have absolutely fallen in love with Quinoa. Guess I'll have to back off it for a while and pray that I didn't develop a sensitivity to it. I'd certainly have to smack myself if I have because I love it more than anything I had to give up. Not exactly sure how I'll be able to develop a meal plan excluding these grains for a whole month and still get the nutrients in, but we'll see I guess.

If one is cut out gluten from their diet in an attempt to heal an autoimmune condition how long should one eliminate cross reactive foods? Is it correct that gluten antibodies are active for up to 4 months?

    • @DrDavidJClarkDC
      @DrDavidJClarkDC  9 лет назад

chris mcaulay The longer the better for cross reactors... gluten antibodies can last for longer than 4 months--especially if you happen to eat a cross-reactor, and cross-reaction happens. It's a two-way street.

Theoretically, if you did not have the genes that predispose you to gluten sensitivity (or celiac), then you might able to avoid gluten and cross reactors for, say 12 months, AND fix any leaky gut issues...and possibly lose the sensitivity to gluten....However, in reality, I've NEVER seen this happen.

You need to watch my playlist on "Most Dangerous Foods for Gluten sensitivity, celiac and gluten-free diet." Oats --even gluten-free oats - can contain a protein called avenin that cross reacts with gluten antibodies.
Oh, and good on your doctor. Celiac is ONE kind of gluten sensitivity, not the ONLY kind. A negative celiac test does not rule out a problem with gluten.
