    People.. You do realize that California was part of Mexico before statehood. Settled, governed, and the culture based on mexican values for centuries. From being settled by mexican land grants ie: Rancheros, the mexican lifestyle, food, and style has been entrenched in California since day one. Especially mexican cuisine, from taco carts to haute gastronomy.

      Los Angeles is the second largest Mexican city after Mexico City. The food there is almost like an additional region of Mexican.

    I think the green 'sauce' on the taquitos was a salsa verde made with tomatillos not avocados. :)

      The sauce is avocado taquero made with avocado yogurt garlic onion jalapenos cilantro salt and water. Google ' My Latina Table' for a good recipe.

    • @Janine.Najarian
      @Janine.Najarian 5 лет назад +3

      It's entirely possible that it's tomatillo and avocado together. And the literal translation of salsa is just sauce so it's whatever

    • @JebusGolpez

      First of all those were not tacos, not exactly anyway, those were flautas (basically a fried version of a taco) normal tacos use soft tortillas exactly what he did with the mole and corn, now THAT was a taco.

      It depends... Mexico is a big country like the US and has a whole bunch of different regional foods. If you want to see what we're missing out on, Rick Bayless has a show on PBS called "Mexico, One Plate at a Time".

    • @nunyabusiness8000
      @nunyabusiness8000 5 лет назад +1

      if you're looking for accurate regional delicacies then you can't. you can get "authentic" in the case of popular dishes you can but Mexico is a big country with many variations of the same dish existing from place to place. it's complicated but dishes my family back in Mexico would enjoy are nigh impossible to find in the U.S so to me the food in LA isn't very reminiscent of the Mexican food I grew up with. I could claim that to me, it lacks that "authenticity" if I wanted to be pedantic but I won't, I'll just say that it isn't appealing to me specifically. My mom was born in Mexico but spent her later teen years in LA and has the same sentiment to a stronger degree.

    As a Mexican, I usually have an issue with these 'sit-down-and-drown" dishes. The main dishes are always drowned in sauce, served with beans and rice and OVERPRICED. They are also usually catering to tourists or family gatherings, which allows them to charge a lot. Cielito Lindo seems more authentic; it's best to hit those smaller stands/restaurants so they won't serve the most simple/basic foods with an inflated price. Gracias!!

    • @JoseMartinez-og2hy
      @JoseMartinez-og2hy 5 лет назад +4

      eltiochusma it’s called BUSINESS! Rent is high, and that my dear Mexican Brother is the butt of most businesses expense costs. We could serve crappy burgers and overpriced steaks, as you will find in most non-Mexican F&B outlets in LA, but we don’t. Usually, the Mexican food you get in LA, is pretty much authentic and value for money. You will find something good to eat for under $4 if you know where to look. GRACIAS!

      As a quarter-Mexican who grew up primarily Caucasian, I would visit my Mexican grandmother once every couple of months when I was a kid. When I did she would always make a big dinner which very similar to the food with mole, refried beans, rice, etc... It might not be a daily food but it's more of a special occasion food which is what a cantina will usually serve. I hit up taquerias or taco trucks for my day to day Taco and Burrito fix.

    • @parissaizan3769

      My wife is 1/3 Native Indian and Spanish the rest - in other words, Mexican. Well, I agree with Eltio, overpriced Mexican food can always be found in Mexican restaurants. Yes, the labor, insurance and overhead play a role. Still, make it real or don't offer it. A bland tomato sauce doesn't make anything better. What is hard is that you know you can and do make all these dishes at home. Still, love your take!

  • @clipcalhoon
    @clipcalhoon 5 лет назад +10

    A good test of the quality/authenticity is the mole, it’s a very intensive process to make the mole sauce, most places use boxed, but if you can find a place that makes mole in-house, you have found the real deal imo

    My introduction to Mexican style food here in New Zealand was in the 90s. We had a Canadian next-door neighbor who learned to cook Tex Mex style food in Texas. He had a food cart in the city center. As well as Tex Mex style chili dogs, he did enchaladas and taco.

    The worst place to eat Mexican food is Olvero Street its a tourist stop. Mole is a very complex sauce with a lot of different spices and chillies.
    Chicken mole is classic Mexican dish. The central market is a good choice for food. Good choice for that one. The best area for Mexican is East LA just outside downtown area. East LA would be like going to Chinatown in Yokohama in Tokyo for Chinese food. The sauce is called enchilada sauce its a chile / tomato based sauce.

    melt in your mouth cut up papaya for breakfast.
    I so wish more famililies frequented these gems rather than the convenience stores we are flooded with.
    Thank you for sharing this glorious part of Los Angeles.🙋j
    Even I sometimes forget how important ingredients like fresh lime, cilantro, flat parsley and shredded greens are as components to an otherwise bland, albeit nutritious dish..

    Carnitas are one of the tastiest types of tacos. The pork is not just shredded but is cooked in a spice and you got it, the lime is there to cut the fat and adds a powerful citrus flavor that complements each bit. I'm sorry you didn't at least try the roasted jalapeño. Even just the skin which is not hot. You ARE eating the taco properly and your love of food and descriptive experience has made me a true fan. WELL DONE!

    The green sauce is not made from avocados, its made frokm tomatillos and peppers. Perhaps the people you say claim LA has no authentic Mexican food, they are thinking of Olvera Street since most restauarants there lean more touristy (even considering thatt, its still more authentic than most of the USA), LA definitely has authentic Mexican Food, its one of the best places to go aside from Mexico to get it! Also the rice is made with tomato sauce and chicken stock... thats generally how mexican rice is cooked, with some alterations depending on who is makjng it. Fyi, i have a video that shows you how to make it vegetarian style 😉 thanks guys for sharing Mexican American cuisine with your audience, please try to do a bit more research next time! Thanks tho ☺

    In Grand Central Market I would also suggest trying the tacos at Tacos Tumbras a Tomas, but the stand you went to is also very good. I'm glad you tried the mole at Olvera Street I think it's one of the only good spots to eat there, but Cielito Lindo is a legend and a must-try. You can find very good mole in all kinds of variations at Guelaguetza. Another old school Mexican place to visit is El Tepeyec in Boyle Heights.

    That salsa on the side isn’t salsa it’s pico de Gallo. It’s a type fresh salsa that is mostly tomatoes, onion, cilantro, maybe a hot pepper, salt, and lime for acid. It’s super common in Mexican restaurants and spooned over tacos or whatever as a garish or a hit of something fresh. True Salsas are usually prepared ahead of time and act as backup sauces or an main event depending on dish but are entirely red or green depending on the peppers used. Mole is one of those sauces in the Mexican culinary database that is the hardest to pull off unless you are super familiar with it as it can contain over 100 ingredients depending on recipe plus every household has its own version of mole very similar to Japanese curry as every household has a recipe for it. But every mole has some form of Mexican chocolate which sacrifices sweet flavor for more of a smooth texture and more chocolate taste but no sweet flavor.

    Your taco eating skills are fine.
    As a person who lives in México City, tacos de carnitas (carne = meat, carnitas = diminutive of a large variety of meats) are very common.
    I hope that one day you can try other types of mole, not only the poblano mole (poblano from the state of Puebla, and the most known), there are black moles, red, white and green (made with pumpkin seeds, and my favorite one), sweeter or spicier.
    There's no one real "mexican rice preparation", that was just one type, "arroz rojo" (red rice because of the tomatoes), you can also find "arroz verde" (green rice made with poblano peppers [from the same state, Puebla]), "arroz blanco" (white, kind of "natural version"), "arroz amarillo" (it's yellow because of the saffron, the same herb used for the paella), and others colors more.
    Hope you had enjoyed your food.

    Ok, the people who say that can’t find authentic Mexican food in L.A., are not from L.A. or California! They have to stay away from the Americanized Mexican food chains and go to local places, some are smaller restaurants, of course, Olvera Street, just anywhere, even catering trucks a long the streets of downtown L.A. has really great authentic Mexican food! And there’s my moms real Mexican cooking... call for reservations, she has a table for six! Lol 😂.... but seriously, go to San Diego to Old Town, also great authentic Mexican food and there’s ladies outside the restaurants, making flour and corn tortillas to go! So happy you two went to Olvera Street, I grew up in Southern California, in South Bay area of L.A., closer towards the beaches, unfortunately I live a few hours away (because of crazy L.A. traffic), but I’m happy that my mother still resides in So. Cal! Thanks for sharing! 😁❤️

    You should try Tex-mex food in Texas. It’s similar but different flavors! Delicious.

    You can sooo find authentic Mexican food and especially if you are in the valley. I lived in San Fernando for some time.. majority of the demographic of the Valley is Hispanic and there some amazing mom and pops Food trucks and restaurants. I’m shocked people even say that to you. Olvera is fun and yes touristy but the restaurant you went to makes a mean margarita.. haha! Looks like you had lots of fun! Did you by any chance go across to the train station to look? It’s beautiful inside.

    In Australia they would serve that salsa & tortilla chips entree as a main & charge you for it

    Pretty sure that green sauce is salsa verde made with chile & tomatillo, not guacamole or any avocado. May be wrong, but...

    Super busy day, hope Satoshi is having a wonderful evening and Shinichi is having a great afternoon in Amsterdam. You’ll soon be back together boys ☺️☺️☺️☺️
    Edit! Brilliant, I love seeing your actual reactions, you seem very genuine about literally everything you eat. The mole sauce looks bloody awesome.

    Mole' can have upwards of 26 different ingredients and is extremely time consuming to make. Ive never had it before but I would love to try it. It's just not something you find in the southeast very often and I'm afraid that the store bought paste wouldn't be authentic.

    Try La Casita Mexicana in Bell but since Shinichi likes to take public transpo he probably won't get to the better places (he's really missing out). Actually most of the LA food in his videos were not of best quality. Having no transpiration is really going to limit what you can have in LA so don't look forward to great food from his reviews. If you want authentic Mexican food find someone from Mexico to recommend a place since most Mexican restaurants serve bastardized Mexican food or Texmex. You won't find tacos or burritos at La Casita Mexicana. FYI the area leaves something to be desired but the food is real.

    we can bring our recipes straight from mexico 🇲🇽 but it still won’t taste exactly the same the ingredients here in california differ in quality as the ones we can find in mexico there is so much spices that are substituted with others
