Hmmm… 1) Why are we even considering “reclamation projects”? The Mets have a lot of money coming off the books AND Cohen, obviously, has a ton of money. Knowing the Braves will be healthy and the Dodgers are the team to beat, why not do all we can to try to have an ace along with two 2’a and two 3’s? Forget a rotation with an actual 4th and 5th starter. Let’s stack the rotation with a 1 and then 2’s and 3’s? 2) Quintana was OK this season. He finished strong BUT his inability to beat the Dodgers means he can’t beat the team the Mets need to go through for a championship. I’m pretty much against him coming back. 3) The offense. Based on this season we don’t need much in the way of offense BUT, we have to consider Iglesias had a career year, Lindor had an MVP/almost career year. We can’t expect that of them for 2025. Additionally, guys like Bader and Taylor stepped up and played over their heads for a chunk of the season. The Mets 2024 offense doesn’t have enough consistent, proven guys to be OK with it going into 2025. I would love to see them go after 2 top tier (a true 1 or 2) starters. A legit big bat that is a reliable hitter. There are peony of guys that can hit for a much better average than Alonso and maybe a little less power but that is fine. And to wrap it up, focus on a dominant bullpen. I would love to see them have a bullpen that can shut a game down after five innings if need be.
I feel like it all hinges on if soto goes to the mets, which might get its own episode or big section of an episode. I've heard everything from "soto only cares about getting paid" to "winning with the yankees will make his stay with them for a discount if the yankees win" to "soto will regress and phone it in once he locks in a long term contract". Soto is the big question
I think the area of the team that you can really improve and make a difference is the bullpen. And instead of developing arms for different roles, the Mets should acquire players who already fit them. I would like to see Stearns deal for Devin Williams, who is earning $10.5m for the Brewers and is a 2026 FA. He would fit an 8th inning set up or co-closer role and when combined with Raley, Stanek and Maton, admittedly all very pricey, Butto, Nunez and using Megill out of the bullpen and spot starter. There are plenty of other candidates and pitching options. I just think that after watching how other teams have relied on their bullpens instead of starters as the bulwark of their postseason pitching, it just makes sense to emphasize its importance from day one. Clearly, you will be substituting arms all season long in a variety of roles based on injury, availability and effectiveness. But creating a strong bullpen foundation from the start is the smart way to reconstruct a WS bound club.
I can’t wait for the Alonso show. I’m interested to see his numbers for the season. I feel like I have seen him leave more runners stranded then he actually pushed in. I wouldn’t mind seeing him back but I do not think we need to over pay. If we do bring him back I can see him as more of a dedicated DH and occasional 1B time as we can look at moving Vientos to 1B, and giving Baty/Igelsia. Some time at third. Acuña/McNeil at 2nd. If we happen to land Soto (will be hard especially if the Yankees win the series) he can be in right, Nimmo in Left and Taylor with whatever young prospect in center
If I'm the Mets, I'm spending my money on the bullpen. You can sign 3 high leverage guys for the same money as 1 high end starter. If starters are only going to go six innings in the playoffs, you need a stacked pen. I would definitely try and bring Manaea and Quintana back. Severino had a good year but I would not want to sign him for longer than a 1 year deal because of his injury history. Basically , I'd rather have mediocre starters and a stacked pen then have really good starters and a lousy pen.
I don't think the future success of the team is dependent upon retaining Alonso, though I am in the camp I wish Alonso would be a Met forever, it is not clear to me his is necessary for building a World Series winning team. 40-50 HRs is a huge part of any team, but Pete has struggled over the last 2 seasons coming in clutch (with notable exception -- errrhhmmm 3 run homer in Milwaukee). For those I would definitely let go -- Ottavino, Maton, Bader, Marinez. I would definitely keep Iglesias and Winker (he was a clutch left hand DH bat and platoon man in right). Alonso is a toss up, if you let Alonso walk you do need to backfill with that power bat so it is gonna cost money regardless. But what is clear to me is that we need bull pen arms first and foremost, then a solid rotation.
I agree with everything you said, except Alonso is mandatory, he is a fan favorite and has more reissue than everyone I think, and as you said you still would have to spend $$$$ to replace.
They really do deserve a championship in orange and blue. Alonso for obvious reasons, but Iglesias too for being the spark plug and being a major factor to the 2024 team’s success.
Tyrone Taylor is equally as good defensively. Also have drew Gilbert who will be on big league club at some point next year depends on the kind of spring he has could make it out of camp. Bader is going to be at least 10 million where as Taylor you can tender him a contract for way less for the next 2-3 years.
It might be tough to bring him back considering how Tyrone Taylor edged him out of playing time late in the year. Bader said he wants to play, and we don’t know if he’ll be the starter next year like he started this year. I think Taylor would have the edge right now. And as we know, Taylor is a really good defensive center fielder as well.
I think the Mets will trade Jeff McNeil this offseason. The Mets have too many good prospects who can play the position. I'd love to see them trade him to the Mariners. If you eat 10 million, you can get some decent pitching in return.
you make a good contract for a good player. you don't make a bad contract for a good player who you like or who gave you good moments. the contract that was previously offered to pete was a good contract for a good player. i think you make a similar offer, but of course now you're down one year - how does that change the offer? if someone else offers pete 8/$200M, thank him for the memories and wish him the best
John Mayer's post was great. I think the players know that they HAVE to finish what they started this year and that the titanium wall known as the Dodgers must go down in 2025. The Dodgers will be in the NLCS for sure with all those pieces they lost coming back and it is going to be even harder to beat them but the Mets will be better and ready.
We need pitchers for games deep in the postseason that are bulldogs; Manea, Quintana, and Senga showed they weren't NLCS tough...not saying replace all of them but we need 1 or 2 topline pitchers for those situations.
I do think the bullpen can be completely refurnished, definitely bring back Stanek if price is reasonable. Spencer Turnbull should be in the discussion as someone to sign, can come out of pen and eat a lot of innings and start if need be. Take 1 of the 3: Jose Leclerc, Jose Ross, Yimi Garcia. Idk how pursuable is Minter or Kirby Yates but either one could be a great lefty arm for the pen and assemble a 3 headed monster followed up by Stanek and Diaz for the 7-8-9 inning shutout relay. I do also believe Buehler could be a gem for his price, but if Manaea has the same price tag I’d rather have him over Buehler. Trevor Williams from the Nats is also a gem and definitely won’t get overwhelmingly pricy. Therefore if Manaea is too expensive, the Mets could get both Buehler and Williams as their #2 and #3, then the rotation will look like this: Senga - Buehler - Williams - Peterson - Blackburn But then this doesn’t really look that much better than this year’s rotation on paper, but it does look better than what the Mets had started with initially before all innings were played out.
Clifford is not ready has only played in double A for less than half a season and hasn’t been in big league camp. Same goes for Jett Williams he keeps getting hurt. Out of those young guys Acuna and Gilbert have the best shot of making the opening day roster. Also don’t forget they will likely have Brett baty on the opening day roster.
@@J-tu2pb I know that’s why I noted in parentheses that Williams and Clifford would be further down the year. Also in my opinion Sprout should start in the bullpen within a month or two later
I wouldn't say offense isn't why they were eliminated. 7 runs in the 4 losses with 2 shutouts? Sure over the season the offense was better than the pitching, but can't say offense didn't contribute to the elimination

Agree with you on the Mets losing JD Martinez, Bader, and Ottavino. I'm not sure about Maton. What I do know is that if he does come back, he's a 6th or 7th inning guy, nothing more. I agree with you on bringing back Winker and Tyrone Taylor. The other FAs, yes Alonso and Inglesias should come back, however, I would not pay Alonso record-breaking money. As far as starting pitching, go with a 6 man rotation, and bring in a big time FA. Here's my rotation. Senga, Manaea, Burnes, Sproat, Blackburn, and my surprise choice....Japan's Roki Sasaki....
I don't know what some people watch, but Pete Alonso is one of the best 1B in MLB. The way he is able to keep that leg in 1b and catch the ball is pretty impressive.
@@melazaconsabor2028 Most 1b can pick about that well. Alonso has a profile to fall off a cliff in just a few years and his range at 1b is already bad and will only get worse. I'm not breaking the bank if I'm the Mets

Im beginning to buy into first baseman not aging well. I seriously question whether we see 40+ bombs for Pete again. I also could see him putting on a Cubs jersey.....he would be a fan favorite and his production would go up at Wrigley.
Off the top of my head im not opposed to parting ways with severino, quintana, jdm, harrison bader, adam ottavino particularly. I would take a chance on bringing back phil maton and starling marte
I agree that they will infuse the roster with even more young talent to fill in the gaps, AFTER they sign another big bat and lots of pitching again. Baty, Acuna, Mauricio, Williams, Vientos, and Alvarez will all have looks or start in ‘25 making the need to sign free agents who are position players for INF or OF highly unlikely outside of minor league and one year deals. My wish? Pete, Soto, and lots of pitching but not overpaying guys. For instance, Burnes does not deserve a large 8 year deal like he is looking for IMO.
Ryan, I don't know why you keep talking about moving Vientos to 1st base or DH ,he has too good of a throwing arm to waste at 1st, a good throwing arm is one of the skills you can't teach, his weakness at 3rd is coming in on the grass to field the swinging bunts ,that is just youth ,a veteran 3rd baseman knows where he is gonna throw that ball before it is pitched I also think he may be using a slightly too big a glove, besides who is gonna replace Mark at 3rd? No not Baty ,Besides to sign Alonso is a no brainer ,he is irreplaceable and he does not suck at 1st, Lindor at SS Jeff McNeil at 2nd. Easy
Run what back? The Dodgers won't be going anywhere and they will actually have their pitching starters next time around. This season was the only chance the Mets had against a weakened Dodgers team and they couldn't get it done.
We have to sign Corbin Burnes in addition to maybe walker Buehler and resign Menea, and maybe kick the tire on Woodruff who no one is mentioning, and who would be coming off TJ. Again, there is no such thing as enough pitching. Lastly,we have to finally fix the bullpen and over all, lower our walk rate. David Stearns has a lot of work to do,but I believe that he is up to the task to say the least.
God no, I think many of the players had great one off seasons and wouldn’t expect that to be the norm. Marte and McNeil had a good year got paid and their production has not been the same since.
@@stevenl9151 Ok. I really wanted Roku Suzuki, but his not going to be posted this offseason. There’s something about Burnes that I just don’t trust. Another option could be Sandy Alcantara (Trade-coming off surgery idk), so maybe Burnes and Buehler I guess
Ray Knight was WS MVP in 1986...He did not return. The team cannot look in the past without looking toward the future. To do so would be a mistake that I'm sure the Mets will not make.

Bring Back Winker For Sure!!
butler can play any where in of and goldi can be good for dh or play any other spot where they play him
Assuming no Quintana, then rotation:
1-Senga
2-Peterson
3-Manaea OR Severino
4-Free Agent TBD
5-Butto
6-Megill
7-Blackburn(long man in 'pen)
8-Sproat
9-Tidwell
10-Lucchesi
Im beginning to buy into first baseman not aging well. I seriously question whether we see 40+ bombs for Pete again. I also could see him putting on a Cubs jersey.....he would be a fan favorite and his production would go up at Wrigley.
Off the top of my head im not opposed to parting ways with severino, quintana, jdm, harrison bader, adam ottavino particularly. I would take a chance on bringing back phil maton and starling marte
Alonso, Santander, Blake or Corbin. Thats all you need. And keep iglesias and winker for depth.
So much for the Milwaukee curse
Walker right now still went 5 shutty 😅
Easy
Ryan our pitchers failed us in the end and you just want to bring everyone back? We need more than them.
Run what back? The Dodgers won't be going anywhere and they will actually have their pitching starters next time around. This season was the only chance the Mets had against a weakened Dodgers team and they couldn't get it done.
This team needs a long man too I think
i want butler from oakland and or goldi from cards
The Mets need more offense the offense is inconsistent don’t fall into that trap but yes we need more pitching
My team everyday
We have to sign Corbin Burnes in addition to maybe walker Buehler and resign Menea, and maybe kick the tire on Woodruff who no one is mentioning, and who would be coming off TJ.
Again, there is no such thing as enough pitching. Lastly,we have to finally fix the bullpen and over all, lower our walk rate. David Stearns has a lot of work to do,but I believe that he is up to the task to say the least.
Woodruff signed a two-year deal with Milwaukee and it was shoulder surgery not TJ. With you on Burnes, Buehler and Manaea
@@LockedOnMets Thanks for the update on Woodruff. Missed that one👍🏾.
God no, I think many of the players had great one off seasons and wouldn’t expect that to be the norm. Marte and McNeil had a good year got paid and their production has not been the same since.
Pete, manaea, winker stanek, railey
Pete as a DH???
Soto 🙏💙🧡
I don’t think Juan Soto is leaving the Yankees. Especially if they win this year
Pitching staff
B. Snell, K Senga, Wal Buehler 1yr- $20m contract, D. Peterson, etc etc etc
Man i hope not. Hate snell
Ottavino, Bader both, JD def, Maton if we can get 1 or 2 better relievers yeah they have to go
Ray Knight was WS MVP in 1986...He did not return. The team cannot look in the past without looking toward the future. To do so would be a mistake that I'm sure the Mets will not make.
Ryan it's not your money so don't worry about it
Garret Crochet
Iglesias should be back. We need that spark and veteran presence and someone who plays the game right. All out on every play not like many guys today who mail it in on effort. Bring OMG back!
Alonso will be back. If he wasn't coming back, then the Mets would've traded him instead of letting him walk for nothing.
Iglesias only on a veteran minimum
McNeil and Baty could very well be traded this off season.
Alonso is really good at catching balls at 1B, but every time he has to throw the ball, he gets a brain cramp. He cannot throw the ball to a covering pitcher or to 2B for a force/dp. Terrible.
Gee you told me nothing, I cant see him coming back owner & gm want something new in RBI man😢, more arms, more arms more arms USE THE DODGER BLUE PRINT! Ive been saying for years STOP WITH BIG NAME BIG $ ARMS, LOAD UP ON ENDLESS YOUNG ARMS! Now many teams have figured it out, ..how many years have Blue won division? Yeah, that's right freaking amaz'n
You forgot about Mauricio. McNeil will be gone
Nobody is paying Maton 7 mil. Senga better listen to the trainers he's under contract for and do as he's told. His personal training method is obviously ass.
I like Bader but the Mets don’t need him
McNeil has to go, see what we can get back
Winker is an awful choice at DH. That would be a real problem.
Get away from McNeil. Infield is crowded and I'd rather have Mr. Omg as my backup infielder than mcneil
I don’t sign Jose Iglesia let’s get Adame
JD can not be back or Bader. Both were easy outs last few months
I'm a braves fan and this was a one hit wonder you'll see next year the Mets will be back in the usual 70 or 75 win sorry.
Gimme the lottery numbers while youre at it
The future for the Mets is easy money.
Trade McNeil n bader asap
Shawon Dunston Jr hell of centerfield need signed minor deal son of Shawon Dunston played Mets 1999 give shot 28 free agents played minor league independent league this kid can way cheaper free agents trying signed !!!
SOTO
Stop people; Soto will not be a Met. Just like we were going to get Yamamoto, Ohtani, Realmuto or Bauer. It didn't happen and won't happen with Soto. Remember Steve Cohen said that a $300M payroll was unsustainable. The Mets are losing money now. That will change.
Alonso, Manea, Sevi, Winker, Iglesias & Stanik should be brought back then they should sign Corbin Burnes and Juan Soto if not Sotto then Tesco Hernandez
Soto + Alonso + 4 new starting pitchers = $500 mil. 2025 payroll. Do the math. Never gonna happen.
