Amazing video, so fast! I am quite new to soldering but just moved into using a rework station and I gotta tell you.. seeing that "shift" happen when something reflows into position is a magical feeling. I can't get enough of this :) Can't wait for the next video!!!!!!!
I purchased that same model laptop that ended up having that same issue. I went back and forth with HP for several months and they tried to fix it under warranty but could not. It was the most frustrating experience ever. I eventually got a refund and moved on. Here you fix it in less than 10 minutes. Amazing!

Great video Alex!! I just fixed this exact device. It was one of the USB-C controller IC's. One was measuring in the 1000's of Ohms while the other was in the hundreds. Change it with a new IC and we got the fix 😎

Another great job, Alex.. On another note, I went and got my wife the 2023 Baja Storm Rock Creek Pathfinder for her new family vehicle. She has been looking at it for a few months, and since her birthday is in a few days, I decided it was time to let her drive away in the vehicle she absolutely loves. The difference between professional and amateur outlook is really interesting. I'm sure I'd spend hours trying to isolate and understand the fault which is fine if your goal is knowledge and experience. If your goal is putting food on the table, time is money so judiciously firing the parts cannon (replacing the USB controllers on an educated hunch) is the way you keep yourself afloat and go home at 6pm instead of midnight. The diagnosis process is fascinating, especially when you consider time and effort have a cost. I love the technical process, but that's not all there is to the problem. This is a great illustration of professional intuition.
The problem is just HP's quality, spectres that will not power on anymore - we replace mainboard, victus no power - sometimes fix is dead simple - ATX reset and the unit comes back to life, x360 models - touchpad stop working - momentarily no fix for it.
Trust me, we are direct repair partner for HP, there some serious issues with their products.

Are those used USB chips any more reliable than the CD3215 etc that one buys used and wonder if they are faulty when a Macbook issue is not fixed?

I can't believe how badly manufactured these chips are and how fast they gets damaged.... maybe they do that deliberately thinking that the customer will trash their laptop and buy a new one

Why not make much longer videos showing multiple repairs? It would be interesting to see how you do things beyond just a short segment.
I might take too if he has to comment, be sure to get good footage and to edit the video of several repairs in a row, so customers have to wait longer for their devices

Great video! I have a question, if you don't mind. Can smoke damage digital microscope lenses, or do I just need to clean the lens, and it will be find? So is it permanent damage? Thank you!
Some people use a Barlow lense on the microscope it expands the working distance of the microscope but decreases the magnifcation slightly. At the same time protects the objective lens aka the one closest to the work area. There are other screw on lenses that can be use to protect the objective lens but they can affect the field of view to a degree.

When you said USB C chips will fail that made me think of the EU mandating that all phones have to use the same charger (even Apple) in the future and I would guess that will be USB C. I think we better stock up on those chips. =)

Hp are pretty bad had 2 in a row both turned into paper weights never again. Their QC is non existent.
Great fix! Tho i'm pretty sure that nobody anywhere near where I live could do what you do and for us it would be just unfixable.

Just curious how much you would charge to do this. Anyone around where I live including myself would want at least a couple hundred bucks for such a repair, and the laptop isn't worth that. I have not developed this skill and no one else in my area has, because of such reasons.
thats what it comes down to...'worth that'.....well it is 'worth that' for some if it has very valuable data or sentimental value....there are many variables as to why someone will spend alot of money on a repair.......they might just be wealthy or they might live in a certain area or it might have been a present or they just want to repair it for fun like a hobby.....the reasons really do not matter......someone could charge $1k to repair a 10 dollar calculator and someone will always pay it
It's not what the laptop is worth, it's what your replacement amount will be. You're not getting a new laptop for 200 bucks.
People asking why you use so much flux don't realize how small these components are.
If the last board you've seen in person is a NES board 15yo ago with its big capacitors and chips, you're not up to date 😆

I've replaced so many of those boards as an ex HP technician, this laptop is a piece of garbage.
Never buy a laptop buy a tablet instead or a desktop, every laptop manufacturer can face hardware failures, even greater if it's a gaming laptop.
