It's original because of that. They took a really good base idea, and made it THEIR OWN THING by turning it into space. That takes some amount of creativity to create such a richly unique asthetic that has NEVER BEEN DONE before OR since. Have you seen badass space ships like the ones in this movie? Me neither. Solar surfers don;'t exist anywhere but in this movie. It may use treasure island as a base, but holy shit it made it it's own unique thing. I wish more stuff like this existed.
Remember going to see this when it came out in theaters. Great movie, and every boy should see it. It very inspiring. Did I mention the soundtrack is one of the best ever made for a movie. Only real men tear up at the ending.
As someone who grew up without a dad, this movie taught me a lot. This movie might have flopped when it came out, but now that I am a full grown man I will be forever grateful for the impact it had on me when I watched it as a kid.

I could totally relate to Jim's situation because my mother ran away from my dad and I when I was young. the pain of a parent just up and leaving you isn't an easy hole to fill. but there's always other parental figures you can always look up to that you meet in life.
I'm 33. I never saw this movie growing up. I seen it for the first time recently. It brought tears to my eyes. My dad left my mom with 3 kids when I was 4 years old. I was very lucky, I had a great man come into my life and take the time to teach me so much. Dave Allen, I miss you.
My dad loved watching this movie with my sister and I when we were kids and would watch it alone sometimes. He died shortly after from suicide. It took a while to realise he must’ve liked how hopeful the movie is and seen himself in Jim, hoping for his happy ending and guidance. His parents were both abusive lowlifes. This song makes me so emotional sometimes, the few people that know this movie keep its beauty alive. Hope you’re doing great dude
It's depressing that this film, along with Atlantis, were huge box office bombs. Because these films were amazingly animated, had fantastic characters, grand world building, great musical scores and interesting stories. And the fact that Treasure Planet had a seemingly never ending development cycle and little recognition from the animation industry, that's is just heart breaking.
Darth Panzer I was aware that it combined a form of digital artwork, I did notice it and I absolutely adore everything about this movie. From the storytelling to the art delivery... which is why I don't like to read what went wrong cause it's always something stupid like "The story wasn't action packed or constantly dramatic," etc. Hence my wondering if it didn't compare to these CGI of lego men and barbie dolls.

I appreciate the fact that they "disneyfied" this story the right way : emphasizing the relationship between Jim and Long John, making it almost father-to-son. Simple and moving.
It saddens me to no end how the sequel never saw the light of day. Go read up on the plot and look at the concept art. It would have kicked ass from what I can tell.
There is a sort o sequel in form of the video game:treasure planet:battle of prokyon, set 10 years after the events of the movie, where Jim goes from being an ensign to an admiral, the game is actually very very good, look it up if you are interested

it ended up failing not because of the plot or whatnot buy it was released at the same time as Harry Potter, and as you know (or don't) it was a huge hit that many overlooked this movie. it was simply a matter of timing.
When disney realized how expensive this movie would become to produce they made it a (marketed) flop almost on purpose so that the audience wouldnt expect such quality again
Hopefully there will come a time where the Disney industry will look back on this masterpiece of a movie and see it's true potential for what it still brings to fans and viewers across the world, Treasure Planet is to this day still the most incredible Disney animated film and I still believe that all in due time it will get the attention it deserves and will eventually return.

Do you know the problem with this film? It's simple. It was premiered under the shadow of Shrek and the rise of the CGI animation. In early 2000 nothing could compete with the computer animation, but Treasure Planet has one of the most impressive soundtracks I ever heard, and an animation that even today is amazing. The relationship between Jimmy and Silver is so fantastic, and somehow, make you feel better. I don't know, it's just an underrated film that REALLY deserves a second chance! Give yourself a chance to understand the importance and the impressive message this movie contains about life, maturing, and grow up!

I never get tired rewatching this classic. It is the first to ever take on such a feat to creature an animated film containing so many art styles, with smooth animation and art design. Coupled that with a great soundtrack that hits home and a storyline that is a little "boyish" and innocent in nature, and make it feel like a one of a kind adventure. I mean this is an example of "they really don't make em like they used to" type of deal. How can no one like this movie is beyond me. Space pirates, treasure hunting, daring adventure, rebel lost kid finds purpose and changes his life around with a fatherly figured scallywag cyborg?

I remember watching this at a friend’s sleepover when I was thirteen. We stayed up until 4am - unrelatedly, I lost consciousness the following night and was admitted to hospital with appendicitis the day after that! - but I had wanted to see the movie for ages and so I remember my experience of seeing it very much so!

One of my favorite movies
I never get tired rewatching this classic. It is the first to ever take on such a feat to creature an animated film containing so many art styles, with smooth animation and art design. Coupled that with a great soundtrack that hits home and a storyline that is a little "boyish" and innocent in nature, and make it feel like a one of a kind adventure. I mean this is an example of "they really don't make em like they used to" type of deal. How can no one like this movie is beyond me. Space pirates, treasure hunting, daring adventure, rebel lost kid finds purpose and changes his life around with a fatherly figured scallywag cyborg?
I’m actually really glad they never made the 2nd movie. Because this story had an end and tbh it couldnt have been better it was wonderful and I love this movie so so so soooo much
I remember watching this at a friend’s sleepover when I was thirteen. We stayed up until 4am - unrelatedly, I lost consciousness the following night and was admitted to hospital with appendicitis the day after that! - but I had wanted to see the movie for ages and so I remember my experience of seeing it very much so!
This movie deserves a lot more credit than Disney wants to give it, probably my second favorite movie ever. Probably just released in the wrong era cause this is a certified masterpiece
Such a great memory for seeing in theater back in 2002 with my mom and my younger brother. I really miss Disney doing the 2-D/Hand drawing animated styles. However, I really want to be a movie director for my dream job in the future and I really want to bringing the 2-D/Hand Drawing animation styles once again on the big screen for future Disney movies.

Whenever I'm missing my parents I give this movie a watch. Gives me memories of me bouncing around while my parents danced to this song. Also I always wind up calling them after watching this.

I like this song and the movie as well since I was younger. I remember seen Treasure Planet in theater back in the year of 2002.
I bought my other half all the Disney stuff on dvd and I'd never seen this and was blown away.
I was genuinely shocked this tanked at the box office.

So hearing that old cyborg say what he said to Jim, made me feel like I could do anything, even if my own mother doubted I'd ever do anything with my life."Now. You listen to me, James Hawkins, ya got the makings of greatness in ya, but ya gotta take the helm and chart your own course, stick to it! No matter the squalls, and when the time comes to really test the cut of your sails and show what your made of....well, I only hope I'm there, catchin some of the light comin off ya that day." It made me cry as a kid and still makes me cry now as an adult because I realize this is the guy I needed there for me growing up
