Here's everything you need to know about SRAM RED eTAP from an electronics standpoint. I dive into the new SRM AXS app for controlling and configuring not just eTAP but also all SRAM gadgets, like dropper posts, Quarq Power meters, and eventually dealing with service related stuff too.
While I briefly cover SRAM Red eTAP's new 12-speed system, the majority of this video is about the smart tech and things like the new Bluetooth Smart connectivity and sequential and compensating shift modes.
However, I also cover some of the gotchas like trainer compatibility and when those will be addressed for major brands.

I'm glad it's priced the way it is. At least I won't be tempted to upgrade.
Instablaster...
My sub box is full of SRAM RED AXS content, but I know that the best and most detailed video is yours!
Thanks!
Thanks for the review! I have already read up and seen some other reviews on the new groupos and as always, find yours to be the most comprehensive.
Am I only one waiting when Ray nocks his phone off the saddle? ;-)
It actually happened. I cleverly covered it up with b-roll. 🤫 Though, because it was attached to my mic, it didn’t hit the ground but instead bounced around in the drivetrain.
@@Dcrainmaker In worst case scenario we could have review of some sport specific phone.
Thankfully I had a case on it. Actually really like the Quadlock case. I seem to drop it a lot.
I’m in. Great job SRAM. Leading not following. $3500 at my dealer. Less than mechanical Campy Super Record.
"zeroing is not calibration" noting things like this gives me lots of confidence in everything you say. Too many supposedly technical pieces have sloppiness that makes you wonder about everything they say.
Thanks!
I state that here and there, though I think in general the industry dug itself this issue. Power meters are hard enough for most users to figure out without having wonky terms atop it.
That is true, zero offset is not a calibration, but it is to hard for the general public to go into the whole pros and cons on accuracy. In fact, nothing is really “calibrated” just, errors or corrections are applied to get the true value.
Best video I have seen on AXS as I wait for mine to arrive, very informative.
It would be interesting to see E-tap become available on something besides their top of the line product.
"Apple style" -> totally agree !
Good to see that there is at last, the synchro shift enabled. Does that mean front and rear derailleur communicate ? If it's true, does FD microshift like Di2 ?
Pricing is totally crazy… Not a price range for average Joe !
Nice overview. Looks like Las Vegas maybe Lake Las Vegas area. Used to ride there a lot.
It is 2020 now, and I still don’t want this groupset, it is a groupset designed around a MTB freehub! They did this as it makes sense and to save development cost, but hey didn’t pass on the savings to the end user.
The design is all backwards, it is slow, much slower than mechanical, now it is not compatible with anything, no cassette interchangeable like before, no aftermarket rings, silly less efficient smaller cogs, no personalising your crank powermeter as it is all one unit, no interchangeable chain rings as they are a consumable product . THANKS SRAM, not only is it expensive, you are locked into their stuff!
Awesome,I could buy 2 carbon bikes with ultegra for the price of this set. They are nuts.
I totally want a review of the Scott Foil!
With all this connectivity, when do you think they will demo a mode that allows you to set your target watt range and have the app automatically shift to that range when riding? Seems like this would be the next logical step.
They are out of their minds with the pricing. NO way.
Spelling it AXS makes it even lighter weight. That's why it's called a "heavy" vowel sound.
Ray, what saddle are you rocking on the Scott Foil? Looks stubby
Awesome ! Very good presentation !!!
Is the new chainring/crank combo 11 speed compatible? I really like the looks of it. Probably the first powermeter crankset I would use instead of the my Cdale Spiderings
Cool, costs twice as much as my 2018 trail mountain bike. Which will make a bigger impact in my riding life? For the price of this drivetrain, I could buy a track bike, touring bike, and commuter and still have some money left over for pedals and wheels. Could build a whole stable for that cost.
Hmm... Can power meter torque and revolution count data be used for potential chain wear assessment? Interesting.
Indeed...you’re on the right track. ;)
Question: I see on the app you have your torque direction set to "reverse" I just purchased my power meter so mine is set to normal. What is the difference? Thanx for your informative @dcrainmaker Ray!
Would you go for Quark over Garmin Rally Pedals for MTB? Just struggling wich to put on my Stumpjumper.
Hi there, been following your posts from time to time. Am wondering, not
sure if you know the answer. Since you have both systems... I am
currently converting my SRAM etap roadbike groupset to use for Time
Trial. I am removing the shifters and in the process of getting the
blipbox for use with the blips. However, the blipbox for 11 speed had
been discontinued. Can I use the ETAP AXS blipbox for 11 speed
configuration? Do you know?
HEY! I HAVE THAT SAME KIT! (does that me a RainMakerHooligan? Or maybe a DCRainmakerKeteer)?
I'm sticking with my Di2! I can have 2 bikes for that price. So not for the average person who rides for fun and recreation.
Ray, what's the helmet you're wearing? Great content, BTW.
It’s the Specialized Evade II, with Angi.
That’s how safe He is, without riding helmet is still on.
I was 99% sure that I understood the new axs PM but I'm a bit confused now. Is the PM middle part removable somehow? If I wear out my front chainrings, do I have to get a new PM??
Sure would be nice if SRAM added customization for first gen etap. it's funny they supplied a usb stick for firmware updates.
Agree
Agree 100%. The usb they included is currently collecting dust somewhere in the basement. Not sure what it's purpose is lol. CAD the prices for this gen are little ridiculous like 4158USD is a mind boggling 5500CAD!! So ya would be so nice if those of us on the "old" etap (i put in quotes cause really not that old in grand scheme) could get that customization.
That's what I'm talking about. Give us some love, too.
Bottom line is will 12 Speed Sram Red eTap AXS group set will make me faster with applying the same fors true the pedals if I use 105 shimano 52-11,28
When I calculate gear length for a 53/11 versus a 50/10, the gear is smaller. The X-Range gearing chart seems to say otherwise. How can this be explained?
Will there be a short & long rear deraileur cage? Or will one cover the 10-26 & 10-33? Thanks
This one covers all of those yes.
DC, where did you get your custom jersey made? Also, are you still in DC?
Pedal Mafia out of Australia. But, I should have a few more kits listed soon. We did a run of them back in the fall, but ended up picking up a few extras just in case folks wanted them.
Am I the only one who is going nuts about the smartphone on the saddle.. Looks like a risky move to be honest 😬😬
any reason that you know of why my red axs crank based power meter is not showing up on the phone app?
Is it possible to change the settings in the app to change the screen on the bike computer like you can with Shimano using the buttons on top of the hoods?
Not yet...but it’s on their radar.
Hi! Is there any solution out there for wahoo kickr and axs group?
Yup, they released the freehub adapter a month or two ago. Enjoy!
Good review, feel like DC always covers the gear pretty in depth. Looking forward to see what you think after a few months of using it. I am still on the fence about using this new tech, i dont have a pro car following me if i have a mishap 70 miles from my house
I remember a time when I just got on my bike and ride it😳
Any updates on the Trainer compatibility? I am about to buy a new trainer and my bike has etap AXS so I need the trainer to be compatible with xdr.
I haven't touched base with the trainer companies on that one in terms of where the various companies stand beyond what I had back two months ago. That said, I haven't seen Wahoo make any comment on the adapter being available (they I think said like June), whereas I know Tacx said it was working it's way to distribution.
did they release a new powermeter as well? or is it the older one with a new look?
It’s new. But also old. It’s the same guts of the existing DZero in terms of electronics and power meter functionality, but new exterior. It’s why all existing DZero users will get the software update as well.
@@Dcrainmaker thanks!
@@Dcrainmaker Ray, what are your thoughts "Quarq Gate?" - not being able to transfer the powermeter to a new chainring.
@@targetpace2680 I'm not a fan. Though at least the price is 'only' $100 more to have it swapped by them versus new rings ($400 for Quarq PM swap, versus $300 for new rings on baseline AXS system). So I guess there's that. :-/
@@Dcrainmaker Thanks. Have you observed any 'drift' in the numbers of older powermeters (as SRAM suggested)?
That road bike if the wheels and group set are added on after (lets just say $9000au bike) would cost about $20,000 AUD... bro thats KTM motocross bike, a holiday to whistler and spending money, and a complete giant road bike without electronic shifting.
When you ride with pro tour riders and they say they can't w8 to get back to Shimano 😁
Any plans for a full review/test if the Tacx Flux 2 Ray? Seems it’s been out for months yet I can’t find any real reviews online ☹️
I’m working through a review now. Hang right!
that head tube is bigger then my future
Still no wireless response from Shimano?
Just checked my favourite online shop, 3000 euro for the disc upgrade kit 😂
Frank Nolf
It will be cheaper.
Old etap ugrade hydro kit is now on 1100€ on r2 shop.
Sadface. Does we ever see again the time when reolutionery thing come and it is priced to kick out competition. This isn’t that. Now we have price is right when boss say👍🏻🧐. Oviesly i defenetly know that marketing and developer cost have to come from the price. It use to be that they seatled it to be longer timeperiod. I’m so sorry to say this. I’m out off the this market😢 11:43
Probably when SRAM announces Force updates. But agree. It’s nuts.
I agree
The hideously large rear derailleurs - particularly on the MTB - look very vulnerable to a strike.
do you need a new freehub on 11-speed wheels?
Yup.
Will a new 12 speed freehub work ok on 11-speed wheels?
I remember when Shimano went 11 speed ... 10 speed wheels needed to be re-dished, or sold if they couldn’t do this, like LW for example...
So where's the 54-40 for TTers and triathletes ?
Pricing is quite higher, cassette not really that low.
Did they bother doing any research ?
They think your going to use the 1 by.
Quarq still hasn't figured out the power meters? OMG They were about the same in functionality in 2009!
What about the Cadence? You have to same as 53/36. But cadence will be increase.. am I right!?!?
Mighty_Duckie No, the only thing that affects power is the crank lenght, not the ring size.
AXS & allies
Man the pricing on these cycling components are just outrageous, I know a lot of time in development goes into this stuff but if these companies keep this up there going to stop developing for the future because no one will be able to afford this stuff, or the only way is if your a professional racer and have major sponsors. I truly love cycling but man I would rather invest that type of money on my kids future "college".
It's SRAM. Manufacturing Tolerances will be crap and it will break.
wow always trolling on sram related videos, you really have an agenda. You probably don't even care if I told you I have 3 sram groupsets all working fine for the last 6 years on all weather condition, because with your aero space grade calculations every single sram products will always break in the near future
Plenty of pros swear by sram
@@bleuify7 My opinions are based on hard and fast numbers. SRAM manufacturing tolerances are poor in comparison to general industry and their competitors.
@Hambini but you haven't even lay hands on this new product let alone measure it with your fast numbers. Does 1 bad product from a company makes all their future products shite? If their manufacturing tolerances are poor can you explain how I even manage to have 3 properly working sram groupsets at the end of the season.
@@bleuify7 my sample size was over 30. I'm not hear to say one group is better than the other for function. I think that is up to people's opinion but Shimano and campag manufacturing engineering is superior and that is a fact.
Why you didn't mention that powermeter is stuck to chainrings and you need to replace them both when they wear out? Kind of important if you want to spend so much money...
I know!! Why is no one talking about this
My husband put this on layaway.
Damn!!🤑🤑🤑🤑. Hrd Levers are still bulcky imo
With all the reviews suddenly popping up... I feel screwed by SRAM. Seems like everybody knew - but me.
I admit - I'm a Shimano boy. On the other hand - at one point in time, I did have the XX. The prices for replacements (cogs, chains, chain wheels) were horrible. And let's not start on the brakes.
can the app be used with a gen 1 etap?
Sadly not. No Bluetooth there.
now, that's a bummer. can't they do it via wifi or ant+?
iOS doesn’t support ANT, so that limits things on the app side. And Wifi is too power hungry for this tech.
Still, I agree some sort of config option would have been nice.
i hope the built in ANT+ on samsung android would be supported
max tire width 700c and 650b using 2x ?
downside: when chainrings wear out you also have to replace the power meter...future money pit!
🏀!
Speaking of 'connecting it all together'...still no progress in remotely controling a Garmin device via RED handle bars? Seriously?
AXS App not compatible with previous etap? Kaman Sram Send a new firmware update 🤦♂️
Sadly not, doesn’t have Bluetooth onboard.
That’s a very sad news Ray 😩😩
Always struggle to understand what he says for an introduction.
why is cycling industry keeps pushing disk brake into our throat?
Chi Zhang because they are better than old school rim brakes
@@cd66061 only better in wet, I do not ride outside when wet, so it is useless to me
Nope, better all the time, especially when descending. Much improved control, don’t wear out expensive rims.
@@chizhang001001 I agree. I don't need discs either.
KISS....keep it simple stupid... how many individual items to charge here? Very high chance for any given ride or overseas trip something is not going to work. I’m sticking with my DA mechanical.....btw it’s also lighter than AXS red and force, 2-3k cheaper too.
Only two identical items - one charger. Not really an issue.
way too much tech in bikes now. just get out and f**ken ride!
Just can't get past the size of the shifters. Too bulbous.
Sram eTap is absolutely slower than di2. Do I care? no.
Oh adding to that though, when you shift in the FD and do a double or triple shift in the RD to compensate, Shimano is noticeably slower to engage than Sram. I don't know why but it didn't use to be like that in the previous gen Di2. This is far more annoying delay than a single RD shift and my preference is towards Sram on that point.
Yeah, having both Di2 on my tri bike and eTAP on my road I don’t notice any meaningful difference. 🧐
DC Rainmaker in the end i don’t think it should be a decision maker i guess that’s the bottom line. hell, i went di2 > etap > di2 > etap so...
Well I don’t know about this new groupset, but when I trial rode eTAP to potential buy, the two things I noticed straight away was it was slow in moving the rear mech and the hoods felt cheapie. I have had SRAM red 10 speed mechanical and campy mechanic and tried campy EPS. SRAM etap was considerably slower, main reason why I didn’t buy as I like a snappy change and generally don’t buy shimano, but etap (old) red was the slowest.
why he is wearing a helmet? lol
I just finished a ride and went straight into shooting. #RealLife
They would really struggle to make it look any worse 🤯 utter shit 🙈
