  • Former ALCATRAZ Prisoner Bill Baker, a.k.a. #129AZ' shares memories of his 'hard-time' at America's most feared Federal Penitentiary. This face-to face interview - on Alcatraz - is a special opportunity to understand the real experience of prisoners enduring life at the 'end-of-the-line.
Fifty years after being transferred from U.S. Penitentiary - Alcatraz - and an adult life in and out of the Federal prison system - Bill Baker has returned to 'the Rock'. Mr. Baker's 'razor-sharp' memory recalls compelling tales of friendships made, escape attempts by fellow 'cons', convict-on-convict murders, and enduring mysteries still haunting 'the Rock'.
Hear details - from prisoner #1259AZ - of the above events, accented by numerous archival pictures of U.S.P. -Alcatraz - including the prisoners at work, at play, and living the never-changing routine of daily life within the infamous cell-house.
Bill Baker, now age 85, sits down for this special private interview with Alcatraz historian Ian Craig - and reveals insightful commentary on the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, comparisons of U.S.P. - Alcatraz to other Federal prisons, the social-structure of the 'population' on 'the Rock', escape stories and much more. A 'must-see' for all aspiring 'Alca-troopers' - see you on 'the Rock'!

Teisha J Indeed. That ending was a mic drop moment. As someone who's been down a similar road, it is nice to here someone clarify the myths that are portrayed on TV about prison. Society tends to only hear all the worst situations that happen in prisons. What he said couldn't be more accurate. There are some very bad people in there, but they'll show you the same respect you show them. New inmates learn real quick to show respect or suffer the consequences. Many people on the streets today wouldn't last a day in there with their attitudes and lack of respect for their fellow man and woman.
I did a total of 2 1/2 years. My last day was July 12, 2012 and haven't gotten in trouble since.
Now I'm working on a writing project to help adults who were child abuse victims, people who suffer from anxiety and depression, and drug addicts. These are all things I've overcome and now I'm one of the happiest people on the planet. I feel it's my duty to give back to those who've been through similar situations as me. The last thing I want is to grow old and regret not doing everything in my power to help as many people as possible. There's a lot of unnecessary suffering out there and I intend to change that.

I met Bill whilst visiting Alcatraz. It was great chatting with him. He was good telling stories as his books attests too. I hope he's still visiting out there, selling and signing his books and enjoying life.
