Two tone paint! Fantastic! Black with silver strips and rockers around the wheel wells! And red pinstripes! Brilliant!!!

Nice job, Lee! She's looking good! I guess the glass pretty much determines how you cut the pillars and make everything fit. Too bad about the chrome around the wheel wells. Yeah, I wouldn't pay that much either. I like the rear deck too. Just like how it used to be back then!

Enjoying this build. Nice progress! I like the chrome delete idea, and the stripes idea, but I’m not a big fan of two-tone paint schemes. Much prefer the clean look of solid paint jobs. But that’s just me. Either way, I know it’ll turn out great. 👍

Good advice on paint. You do good work. I like to find deals but normally I have two manufacturers I like to purchase from. Cheap paints are a huge risk, they may be runny or have any kind of unforeseen issue. If they cover well with enough solids, lay out well and look good they still may not last longer than two or three years before major paint failure begins to appear. I have seen cheap paint turn to chalk, crack, peal, flake, chip off in chunks, you name it. Same kind of paint you would get an 89 dollar Shibe job done with years ago. Car flippers would cave and pave rust buckets using soda cans, chicken wire for large areas missing steel. Then they would go get a Shibe job shot on it and make themselves a couple/ few hundred bucks. A victim/ buyer would buy a great looking car thinking they got a great deal but in two years it looked worse than when the bondo expert/ car flipper got a hold of it. That silver paint would just crumble off from the sun and elements, the bondo would swell and rust would be bubbling through all over.

Lee, for finishing the inside of the quarters I humbly suggest considering grabbing some cans of Fluid Film from Walmart for $10-$12/can. You can get small, inexpensive extension sprayer hoses that adapt to the spray can, and before you cover the access, shoot it inside that whole area from every angle possible. It's a lanolin-based rust inhibitor/cavity wax, will arrest any existing rust and prevent new from forming, and it "creeps" once applied so it will reach difficult spots as it sits in the sun. It won't wash out from enclosed areas like that, so that repair will likely outlive all of us.
    ✌️ from NC.

Yep - completely agree......if she looks good, she gotta sound good too - sound like she looks, in fact. I like the technique of using the internal cardboard rolls to wrap the sandpaper around. Hadn't thought of that myself, but I can see where I'll be using it. Dress trim for any 70s vehicle has gone absolutely stupid since 2020 - and that's if you can find it. People who were around before then aren't in business or aren't doing it any more and the rear orifices that have taken over seem to think of a number and then quadruple it. I REALLY like your idea of running silver paint in place of the original side trim - that's exactly what I'm doing myself on a build. On another one, I ran silver pin-striping. Both look like the factory deal from a distance and still hold their weight when viewed up close because they look GOOD and are in the right places. Over four hundred bucks US plus tax (which would be about $700 my money plus tax) for four little strips of aluminium....now, if it was for every piece on the car, it might be easier justified, but nahhhhhh...... At that price, you could justify getting that special paint made up for you, rather than the ruddy wheel arch trim! Tell you what though, that beast is going to look absolutely shit hit when she's done. All the best - and keep well hydrated in that fantastic heat!

I think you should go overall Silver with the mid 70's thin ( 6-8") black stripes without the outlining pinstripe they used that on Oldsmobile 442's I have never seen a Malibu Classic like that it would make it more One-of-a-Kind especially if you are not going to put a landau roof on it !! I wouldn't put vinyl on it but the Thinner black stripes would be cool !! I like the firethorn red interior that is gonna pop against the SILVER !!! DOING GREAT Lee keep it up !!!

Ignition switch advice: pull the key all the way out and hit it with a little teflon spray, then put it back in but gently apply rearward pressure to the ears while pulling the key backwards a little bit. Usually when those keys wear, they will go forwards but not backwards. You can get a new key cut by code at a locksmith off the old key, which usually fixes that problem. I was a locksmith back in the 90’s and 2000’s, made lots of impound auction keys for 70’s & 80’s GM cars.

Could try moving the shifter around a bit while trying to turn the key back to lock. Another thing too is the slots in the steering column lock plate need to line up with the lock button that pops up to lock the column. Can try turning the steering wheel back & forth slightly while trying to lock the ignition.

Made some nice progress on this video. There was a lot of tedious work and baby steps, but you made a nice repair job on that quarter.
Yep, that silver paint was a good score. It certainly isn’t cheap. I will probably need more European clear coat for the custom paint on my 73 van. If I buy another gallon it’s going to be about $300 with hardner. But I may be able to get by with a quart. Have to see how far the rest of what’s left of the gallon goes.
