Hats off to Bobby on the E-type doors! Mechanical and electronic engineering expertise! Hugely impressive! Great job
When it comes to doing a restomod on a Jenson you have to get all your ducts in a row
Damn! I came here to make that very comment!
Jensen -- although your spelling was on the Button...
What like at a fairground.
The door mechanism is pretty impressive
Yes please for a dedicated episode on ECUs.
Would love to see an episodes dedicated to PDMs as well if possible
Tuesday is the new Sunday.
I like the Timelapse element, shows nicely how much work goes into the repairs. Please do more
Bobby is a legend
Back to normal @retropower in the production office
Ooof 190? Ive been here since caffine and cortinas, fairplay fellas, i just wish the channel got more attention 🙏🏻
Makes for a good Tuesday afternoon
I did have some serious withdrawal symptoms on Sunday
An open day would make for a good episode 200 I reckon, if that's not too close for consideration.
Ted and Crofty would be proud that you managed to make Tyre chat so entertaining! 🤣
Almost got depressed after the Sunday's no video update
Thank you so much, had a shit day and this is just what I need this evening xx
Thank god stu's got all his ducts in a row
Those All'agros look the nuts, who knew that you can polish a turd!
As always, an excellent update, albeit a tad late. But, let's be grateful for small mercies. 👍
Have you looked at Haltech ECUs? Lots of combinations of ECU and PDM. Luv your shows. Cheers from Perth!
Thanks for tackling my question regarding ECU choice Cal. I'd find a feature on pros and cons of the various manufacturers products incredibly useful!
Thank the Lord, I can stop lying on the floor having a tantrum, Well done! I have thought for some time that if you invested in a set of in car cameras like Harry uses in Harrys Garage you can share the feel of driving your creations with us. This could kick off with a "Drive In" for existing customers for your 200th video. You have built a really diverse range of cars and I for one would love to see how the XJC, the Escorts and Minor Threat feel to be in.
I'm going to throw out another manufacturer of aftermarket ECUs... Holley! Yes, you'd think that they'd only be good for 'Murrican V8s, but some of their kits are meant for up to 12 cylinder engines, and one RUclipsr, @TheQuestionableGarage, installed one in a Ferrari 308 with ease, and was able to run it with the self-learning tune prior to sending it to the rolling road. Something to consider 🙌
YAY! Glad this ep wasn't lost to the computer gods. Interesting about electric cars, really like your attitude towards them and an SM would be amazing.. Though did just see a DS Safari on Collecting Cars... that would turn heads too. Cheers for the vid.
At last..;-) Yo from Mexico
Question: Has Nat bought Richards "new" sewing machine "Spares or Repair" off FB Marketplace? 😅🤣
😆😆
i like the idea of an electric rolls or a Citroen DS. For a Citroen SM, however, i would want an ICE engine. The DS could be truly magical. no noise, no potholes, comfy seats, all the little gimmicks like 3 wheel driving, setting it on the ground, lifting it up, self centering steering, power everything, i like it.
Cal.. You should look into a company here in the USA called isspro, they are out of Oregon. I have them make custom vdo tube style senders for fuel tanks on most of the rally cars I work on with fuel cells...
Great to hear New Zealand mentioned in your latest video. NZers are certainly car lovers owning more cars per capita than any other country (9 cars per 10 people).
Also great motor racing enthusiasts in fact the latest Indy Car race featured NZ drivers taking 1st and 3rd places.
Love your videos, keep them coming, regards Howard, New Zealand
Incredibly stoked we have a 'Born in NZ' product getting used by the likes of Cal, Nat & team.
Super nice job on the escort there chaps
Porsche (Panamera) Has a nice function that holds the door wherever you leave it. Mechanism might be adaptable to your XKE doors (gas strut will fail with time).
Enjoy your work!
Hey! Citroen DS was my idea!!! SM even better. It would be a challenge too to maintain that perfect suspension with the added weight. Cutting edge batteries??? I would happily watch that.
Have you got "soft close" catches for those autodoors? It's really difficult to get slowly closing doors to shut nicely as they need to compress the door seals. Here a "softclose" catch really wins, because it can provide a very controlled, very high force final 10mm or so of movement to ensure the door is actually shut and latched every time, no matter what happens. To that end, i'd personally also add in hall effect position sensor to the door and close loop control it's position in the time domain.
As someone who makes custom electronic control units, this is my bread and butter though ;-)
Yep, it will be using softclose latches 👍
every time i see one of those great looking XJCs i wonder what a MKX would look like as a 2-door coupe. It is a MUCH larger car, which would suit todays larger people.... enough room for comfy furniture inside. i would love to see a render of one of those. lower it an inch, maybe roll the rockers under a little.
One has been built as a race car, 7/8 scale replica body over a full chassis
I hope that you are certain that that left hand door of the E-Type is sound. It has damage on it. If it has distorted any of the door frame you wonderful hinge may not work when you reskin it.
I'm not sure what I feel about them, but quartic wheel arches are obviously appropriate for an Allegro 😉
Sure this has already been planned but E-type Jag doors would benefit from a proximity sensor to save powered door whacking neighboring cars/walls/columns in car parks etc. Nice engineering by Bobby on the mech.
They are getting exactly that 👍
Cars that would be ideal for 'EV' conversion are the Old Humber Imperial, the Austin Princess Limousines. & the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. All for hotel work or private hire for special events (weddings, etc.). If all the bodywork was redone in Carbon fiber over a space-frame chassis to make them as light as the original vehicles or even lighter. As most of their driving would be at slow speeds in town traffic, they would not require a massive power unit or battery storage!
I thought the plan with the e type was to make gull wing doors, hell of a lot of work and parts, but the door appears to still be flat and a what seems like a meter wide.
Surely the ultimate EV conversion is the DMC Delorean? Ok, it's been done already, but hows about a wide arched, 4wd, fully dynamic (4 motors) torque proportioning conversion? 1.21 GW is probably out of reach, but 1.21MW might not be 😏
Marvellous! Can’t wait for the next episode.
Just a quick thought. Would it be ‘safer’ / more controllable within tight parking spaces to have the e-type doors be opened manually and then shut automatically at the flick of a switch?
too many ducts just might drive you a little QUACKERS 😄😄😄🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
I hope one of the Allegros gets an awd setup and a Jackson Racing Supercharger.
👍🏻👍🏻
I enjoy your tour of all the projects. I certainly don't find your narrative repetitive. Don't tell me some people are moaning.....still no lottery win, so my Bedford CF project is still on hold🤨
Good choice of van, for me the CF was a far better van both to drive and as a load carrier than the Transit!
@@johnmoncrieff3034 agreed. Ford just had a much bigger marketing budget....
Love the content guy's, really informative.
One thing I do miss is the outakes towards the end of the reel. Is there any chance of getting these reinstalled?
45:58 my question to Cal, for a future episode, is where do you get those cool work shorts? I think I've seen the long pant version previously as well. I love the generous pouches/pockets for storing bits and bobs. They look rugged and comfy too.
Ha! Following week's episode shows the logo - DeWalt Cheverley Cargo Shorts
Im still waiting for the scimitar project.....
Retro EV car there are places waiting for you in Hell if you do lol. Actually that welsh tw*t did 2 that worked - the bubble car and the deloren (looked like it handled after it was better balanced).
Did you consider making the E-Type doors out of carbon help give the hinges and motor an easier life whilst offsetting the extra weight? (especially when parked facing up-hill), and are you also looking at soft close, for that elegant final movement?
Not keen on auto opening doors on E Type, must be a client request, to tech for the classic
Electric Classic Car channel has done two superb electric Testarossas that are no longer 10 mpg dinosaurs.
And no longer have the only bit of enjoyment they ever had
@@retropowercars Sorry but 10 mpg kills any enjoyment I would have had. Also why assume that everyone in the world enjoys one thing? Seems like a very one-dimensional view.
@@reggiedixon2 I bet you're a hoot at parties!
@@Beerzone1 Not as much of a "hoot" as people who specify exactly what other people must or must not enjoy.
What's going on with the blue E-type, Mustang, & Camaro?
Nat, could you possibly take a few moments to explain "Hydro Dipping" for curious idiots like myself?
The results are amazing, but I have no idea how it's done...
Let your talent weld them in stainless steel plate, I think you have at least two welders (among other talents) who could do this.
So when it comes to fuel causing problems with 'rubber' hoses why not use stainless steel flexible bellows instead?
I would choose copper or stainless malleable pipe with coiled areas to absorb the vibrations at both ends.
Aston Martin lagonda EV? 😊
Is Kuma getting Bumper(ette)s?
🎉
What's the car in the background of the E type segment with Bobby? 🤔
That’s one of the Redux bmw m3
👍🏼
Im first, how sad and annoying does that make me?🤣
Good for you Fred😉
Saab now where talking
So I am getting the feeling that the reason you don't do in depth vids before handover is that the owner doesn't want it ?
It would be really good if your videos featured the content of the title. I love what you do, but you flit from one car to another. I gave up trying to follow you months ago
If you look at the latest group of guys working on cars, they create a series for each car. People love this, hence their viewing figures.
If you did this and edited the videos as entirely separate and single car focused your views will sky rocket.
I will check back and see, but I am off 7 minutes into this one because you are still on the Jenson, which I have zero interest in.
Now a series focused on the escorts etc, with zero distractions would be “Top Gear”
Waffle waffle waffle, how can you make explaining vent and cooling ducting so long and boring 💤, next was explaining the bleeding obvious A post to new flooring, as for shortening the floor surely, it was cut to length would suffice . All standard bodywork fabrication. I didn't watch any more as sleep deprivation is not a good thing. I can only think that the waffle was to explain to the owner the reason for the mind blowing cost. Purely my assumption.
Aaaaaand everything's right with the world again. ;-)
Glad you got it sorted.
P.S. An ECU/PDU guide would be ace.
I thought the plan with the e type was to make gull wing doors, hell of a lot of work and parts, but the door appears to still be flat and a what seems like a meter wide.
I don't think they were ever going to be gull wing doors, but were initially going to be opening at more of an angle. The first angle caused too many issues with the doors hitting the wings too hard.
Fantastic recovery - well done Jamie!
Bravo Bobby on the door work!
I always thought that an NSU Ro80 would make a good EV conversion, as an electric motor would achieve the same thing that the rotary engine was trying to do, but without the worries over worn seals and housings. Plus, there must be a few cars out there that still have Ford V4 conversions, and I think that converting one of those to electric would actually bring it closer to the ethos of the original design.
Lottery project one. Renault Avantime on a Nissan GTR floorplan please. Espace F1 inspired wide body. Maybe Bobby would like to create some suicide doors for it!
No lie.. sat open mouthed for a good 20-30 seconds, just looking at the thumbnail on my TV ❤ Bet Gordon order's 1 by next week
Yeah the Video Editing MacBook got fixed
Awesome as Always Great content... Nat should have his own channel Called NAT'S Tangent Relief ... i could listen for hours :D
The Allegro just get more attractive . Very strange - nice Lines
Haltech do a good ecu, pdm, sensors & support.
Yay, my comment got read out! And hello to Adam, I hope you enjoyed your time here!
44:00 ECUs.
Certainly the brands you mentioned are well known and each have their strengths.
One that I'd love to see you guys try is the Australian made Haltech systems, in particular their Nexus series which is a full function ECU and PDM in one unit.
Well received in the US and is the go to unit here in Australia, perhaps not well known in the UK.
These guy’s will never be out of work
Those E type doors probably cost £10k.... Fkn ridiculous.
With all your engine swaps, suspension/steering modifications etc, do you every get into trouble with the DVLA with their radically altered vehicle rules?
That's some smart thinking, using a gas strut to augment the electric motor!
But, if the doors on the Jag' are that heavy, would it be wise to add (a) re-inforcing plate(s) to the hinge' areas, and/or internal gussets, to ensure use and abuse (like people leaning in it) doesn't distort, or crack, the mounting points on the door and pillar?
Depending on the strut location, might be an idea to have it go over-centre as the door closes, that would both help the motor close the door, and avoid it springing open as the motor is over-driven.
What type of car covers do you use and how do they work with all the grinding and sanding you do there
Thanks in advance
Loved Bobby;s Arduino PWM on the door, hope you will be adding anti crush sensing on it closing and anti bump on opening (small time of flight sensor module would sort that a treat)
If I ever win the top prize in a lottery.....
It would be great to see the finished vehicle, running and the finished details, before it goes out if possible.
Great content as usual (eventually 😂😂), although there was a distinct lack of tangents from Nat this week! Loving Bobby's work on the E-type doors. Question: what are the Allegras going to be registered as? There's been so much discussion on the various forums/groups that I'm involved in about floor pan/body swaps of late. Particularly British contributors commenting on American pages how 'that wouldn't be legal over here without an IVA and a Q plate'. I then thought about your Stratos - didn't that get an age related plate as if it was registered as a new car? Really interested to get your feedback, based upon your obvious experience in this area. Thanks.
Does it matter?
@@neilevans5907 It matters about as much as your reply. Why bother with such a positive contribution? I'm just curious as it's something I've come across a lot lately.
Cal, talking about ECUs etc, I would like to know why say, getting 300 horsepower from a mapped and dyno’d 2.0 performance engine nowadays seems normal when using a similar engine block with carbs 50 years ago that would be difficult??
A couple of questions:
Have any RP cars been in accidents? Do you feel their safety is as good, or better than their original spec?
Using 3d prints for production parts, do you have concerns about UV degradation? Do you have a good life expectancy for 3d parts in various environments (under hood vs interior, etc.)
You mentioned several different ECU's that you have tried, but you didn't mention Haltech. What are the pluses, minuses, or have you even tried them? Thx.
Really interesting comments from Cal at the end about electric cars and Citroens. I love the Citroen DS (later models with the larger headlamps particularly). I’d be really interested to know where you might go with a DS with conventional petrol power and what you might do with the suspension (Xantia Active?)?
And I am impressed with that hinge work - "wonderful" was not sarcastic.
Lancia Gamma Coupe would make a great candidate for an EV conversion. Take away that detonating engine from the power steering 😂
Now where‘s my Sunday roast?!!!
The volume needs to be increased as it is becoming difficult to follow your commentary.
summer is on its way Cal got the guns out 😂
Do you use drive by wire only for idle or do you need additional air bypass?
Dbw only
About the E Type door hinges could they be made in titanium for strength and size.
