Does This Country Have a Racist Name?

  • How did Niger end up with a name that is confused with a racial slur? The Country of Niger is a country in West Africa, just south of Algeria and Libya, west of Chad, North of Nigeria, and east of Mali. Just like puck or sit or any other innocent combination of letters, it is not a vulgarity. But lets face it, if you change the spelling of the word Niger in any way either by adding, subtracting or changing letters, it would no longer mean a country in West Africa, just as changing the spelling of any other word changes the meaning of that word. So, does this country have a racist name?

    The names Niger and Nigeria were not names given by Afrikans. Nigeria was named by a colonist Flora Shaw - who I can assure was as racist as the men in cloaks you have in the thumbnail. These are the same people who's Grandparents would have been slave owners of Afrikans. I would not be surprised at all if they named these nations with intention of racially cursing Afrikan people. The only guarantee we have that this is not the case, is by naming our own nations ourselves.

    From Canada with Hava: 13 1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger,.......(Acts 13:1) We have been duped. Africa is the land of Shem; hence, a large portion of it is The Promised Land aka YahIsrael. HalleluYah and Baruch 2:28-35.

    I don't know for sure if it stems from a racial slur/tjhe word black in latin, but for sure people use it as an alternative to the n word...

    • @ufundi1
      @ufundi1 Год назад

      Absolutely, correct. Actually, nigger is a derivative of the Latin 'nigrum or niger'. So, niger is tied up with nigger and nigrum in terms of linguistic origin. While the suggestion for Niger to change its name, the same would for Nigeria as well. Basically we (Nigerians and Nigeriens) accepted a name from the wazungu in reference to a nationality. We have taken an 'L'.

  • @salamantics
    @salamantics Год назад +1

    Thanks for making this video. American education teaches about the Latin stem over the obvious river. The river isn’t known colloquially as the “black river” so I think that was purely misinformation that they taught us. (At least I don’t think it is)
